The development history of Chinese characters 中国汉字发展史 2011 级汉语言文字 Contents Task division Outline Character is the graphic symbols for human beings to communicate feelings, express ideas and r
ecord different kinds of languages. Besides Chinese characters, there are so many kinds of ancient characters, such as cuneiform['kju:niif?:m] Babylon['b?bil?n] characters used by people of ancient used by the Egyptians 李慧 樊启芬
[i'd?ip?(?)n],the Maya characters and so on .But so far ,they all have disappeared in history except for Chinese characters.
Now we’ll have a specific understanding of the development history of Chinese characters, mainly including oracle-bone inscription(甲骨文）, inscriptions on bronze（金文）, Small seal script（小篆）, clerical script （隶书） regular script(楷书） Cursive script 草书） running script(行 , ， （ ， 书）. But the last two cursive script（草书）and running script(行书）are not regarded as the main font of that dynasty, but the addition of regular script(楷书）.
It has gone through quite a long process of historical development for pictographic writing to transform into a symbol of the recorded languages ??- Chinese characters. We can now see the earliest stereotypes text is the Oracle of the Yin and Zhou dynasty. They were carved on tortoise shells and animal bones for continually divination in Shang dynasty. During divination, people would burn the tortoise shells first .When those tortoise shells Cracked ,people would judge good and bad according to them and carve the results of the divination on tortoise shells. So we call the characters which carved on tortoise shells or animal bones oracle-bone inscription Pictographic writing
Inscriptions on bronze（金文） Inscriptions on bronze was used as long as 1200 years from Shang dynasty to Qing dynasty. They were usually carved on ceramic [si'r?mik] model in advance before casting, Yet there are also a few of inscriptions was carved on bronzes directly. Because it’s easier to carve on bronze than carve on tortoise shells and animal bones, so inscriptions on bronze look more like a picture than oracle-bone inscription and more closer to the original characters. 金文 石鼓文 金文 Small seal script（小篆）
Small seal script was adopted in the Qin Dynasty for the purpose of standardizing the script which was issued by the first emperor of Qin dynasty， it was stem from large seal script(大篆） .At that time, every and country had their own written words. When Yingzheng unified those countries, communication became a problem. As a result, he omitted and changed the Seal script which his own country used before to let it
become a Common script. So we also call it Qin seal 大篆 籀文 小篆 Clerical script（隶书） In Han dynasty, the clerical script replaced the small seal script and become the main typeface .On the other side an small seal script is mainly used as a ancient writing to carve seals and bronze .Thus the history of Chinese characters depart from the ancient writing stage to the stage of Li Kai. This process is called ‘Libian“.After then, writing speed became more fast than before， and the character symbols were more close to the present writting, Yet they could be identified more easier. 隶书 Regular script The regular script is similar with the clerical script in the typeface structure. But compared to the clerical script, the regular script changed the writing strokes from flat to Square. We called them hinese characters. After a range of changes, the regular script form into a pattern in Tang dynasty.
楷书 Cursive script
Cursive script was produced in Western Han Dynasty.Entering in Eastern Han Dynasty, it was called "Zhangcao“with some characteristics of clerical script. And later generated in the regular script, it was called “Jincao".on the basis of regular script, 黄宾虹（临陆机） 今草
Unlike the neat of regular script, unlike the imaginative of cursive, running script is a font from the regular script and cursive. If regular script was like one sitting, and the cursive script was like one running, then the running script is like one walking. Running script, probably became popular in the Wei, Jin era , and one representative is the famous calligrapher[k?'ligr?f?(r)] Wang Xizhi of Eastern Jin Dynasty 王羲之《兰亭集序》 王羲之《兰亭集序》
王羲之《快雪时晴贴》 王羲之《圣教序》 Summary
