I arrived at the bus station much too early for the London bus, which was not to leave until five to twelve. I pushed through the crowds, looking for somewhere to sit down. Scores of people were standing about, or struggling along with their bags and the cases to find the right lines. There was a party of school girls. I could see teachers trying to keep them in order. But there was nowhere for me to sit. I stepped into the station buffet. I looked up at the clock there. It was only twenty to twelve. I found a seat opposite a large mirror on the wall. Just then a friend of mine called Jim came in and sat with me. "What time is your bus?" asked Jim. "Oh, there's a plenty of time yet," I answered. "Oh, I'll get some drinks then," said Jim. We talked while drinking. Then I looked at the clock again. "Good heavens! It's going backward!" I cried. "A moment ago it was twenty to twelve and now it's half past eleven." "You are looking at the clock in the mirror," said Jim. I could kick myself for being so stupid. I had not realized that the marks for one and eleven on the face of the clock were the same. The next bus was not to leave for another hour. I have never liked mirror since then. 56. The London bus left ________. When a consumer finds that an item she or he bought is faulty or in some other ways does not live up to the manufacturer's(制造商). claim(宣称) for it, the first step is to present the warranty(保单), or any other records which might help, at the store of purchase (购买). In most cases, this action will produce results. However, if it does not, there are various means the consumer may use to gain satisfaction. A simple and common method used by many consumers is to complain directly to the store manager. In general, the "high up" the consumer takes his or her complaint, the faster he or she can expect it to be settled. In such a case, it is usually settled in the consumer's favor, assuming (假定) he or she has a just claim. Consumers should complain in person whenever possible, but if they can't get to the place of purchase, it is acceptable to phone or write the complaint in a letter. Complaining is usually most effective when it is done politely but firmly, and especially when the consumer can demonstrate what is wrong with the item in question. If this can't be done, the consumer will succeed best by presenting specific information as to what is wrong, rather than by making general statements. For example, "The left speaker does not work at all and the sound coming out of the right one is unclear." is better than "This stereo (立体声) does not work." The store manager may advise the consumer to write to the manufacturer . If so, the consumer should do this, stating the complaint as politely and as firmly as possible. But if a polite complaint does not achieve the desired result, the consumer can go a step further. She or he can threaten to take the seller to court or report the seller to a private or public organization responsible for protecting consumers' rights. 61. The passage tells us ________ .

A. how to settle a consumer's complaint about a faulty item

B. how to make an effective complaint about a faulty item

C. how to avoid buying a faulty item D. how to deal with complaints from customers 62. If a consumer wants a quick settlement of his problem, it's better to complain to ________ . A. a shop assistant C. the manufacturer B. the store manager D. a public organization

63. When a consumer finds that his purchase has a fault in it, the first thing he should do is to ______ . A. threaten to take the matter to court B. complain personally to the manager C. write a firm letter of complaint to the store of purchase D. show some written proof (证据)of the purchase to the store 64. The phrase "live up to" in the context means ________. A. meet the standard(标准) of C. fulfill(完成) the demands of B. realize the purpose of D. keep the promise of

65.The most effective complaint can be made by ________. A. showing the faulty item to the manufacturer B. explaining exactly what is wrong with the item C. saying firmly that the item is of poor quality D. asking politely to change the item

C
Parents should stop blaming themselves because there’s not a lot they can do about it. I mean the teenager problem. Whatever you do or however you choose to deal with it , at certain times a wonderful reasonable and helpful child will turn into a terrible animal. I’ve seen friends deal with it in all kinds of different ways. One strict mother insisted that her son right from a child, should stand up whenever anyone entered the room, open doors and shake hands like a gentleman. I saw him last week when I called round. Sprawling himself (懒散地躺) on the sofa in full length, he made no attempt to turn off the loud TV he was watching as I walked in , and his greeting was no more than a quick glance at me . His mother was ashamed. “ I don’t know what to do with him these days,” she said. “He’s forgotten all the manners we taught him.” He hasn’t forgotten them. He’s just decided that he’s not going to use them. She confessed(坦白) that she would like to come up behind him and throw him down from the sofa onto the floor. Another good friend of mine let her two daughters climb all over the furniture, reach across the table, stare at me and say ,”I don’t like your dress, it’ s ugly.” One of the daughters has recently been driven out of school. The other has left home. “Where did we go wrong?” her parents are now very sad. Probably nowhere much. At least, no more than the rest of that unfortunate race, parents. 61. This text is most probably written by_____.

A. a specialist(专家) in teenager studies middle school C. a parent with teenage children

B. a headmaster of a

D. a doctor for mental health problems

62. The underlined word “ it” in the second paragraph refers to ____. A. the change from good to bad that’s seen in a child B. the way that parents often blame themselves C. the opinion that a child has of his parents D. the advice that parents want their children to follow 63. The boy on the sofa would most probably be described as ___. A. lazy B. quiet C. unusual D. rude

64. From the second example we can infer that the parents of the two daughters___. A. pay no attention to them C. have come to hate them B. are too busy to look after them D. feel helpless to do much about them

65. What is the author’s opinion about the sudden change in teenage children? A. Parents have no choice but to try to accept it. B. Parents should pay still more attention to the change. C. Parents should work more closely with school teachers D. Parents are at fault for the change in their children.
