Procedure

1) Have a fast reading of the following passage in 4 minutes and list the advantages and disadvantages introduced in the passage.

2) Work out the author’s attitude and decide whether you agree with him/her.

3) The class is divided into two sides: one agreeing with the author and the other not and have a debate on the topic: Should smoking be banned? Pros: smoking should be banned; Cons: smoking shouldn't be banned.

4) You have 10 to 15 minutes to prepare. Besides the reasons mentioned in the passage, try to list as many other reasons as possible to support your point of view.

5) In each side, you should choose one
student responsible for the whole process. This student should organize the discussion and summarize some reasons to support his/her side. S/he should also assign some students to give the first presentation of his/her group’s point, to participate in the free debate, to give the final statement.

6) One of you is chosen to

host the debate.
7) Then the debate begins

after 10 to 15 minutes’ preparations.

Step 1: 1 minute’s presentation of each side’s point. Step 2: 8-10 minutes’ free debate,
which begins with the cons’ questioning (The time allowed for this step depends on students’ performance. If they have much to say, the time can be prolonged relatively).
