Task 1 Study the pictures and discuss the questions below in small groups. Use the words given below if necessary. 1. What is the red device in the first picture used for?

The red device in this picture is a hard drive, which is often used for storing computer files in case of computer failure or theft. It is mobile, so it’s convenient and popular among computer users.

2.

How much do you know about the process in the second picture?

As we can see in the picture, the computer data or file folders are stored offsite and online “in the cloud”. It is called “cloud backup” or “online backup”. Users need to pay a certain amount of money to order such service and will have their computer files automatically stored in some data center.

Part A

Task 3 Discuss the following questions. 1. Do you have the habit of backing up computer files? Why or why not?
a. Yes, I do. Because it is not absolutely safe to have only one copy of our files in the computer, which may fail sometime and cause the loss of the files. b. No, I don’t. I know it’s important and necessary to back up them, but I always forget to do that.

2. What do you think of backing up data somewhere online rather than onto an external hard drive?
I think it’s more secure to store them online, because we don’t have to worry about any failure of our computers or hard drives or any accidents; instead, as long as there is Internet connection, we can have access to the data for free or at a low price.

Storing Your Files Inside the Cloud
When the hard drive on Melissa Grove’s computer

failed, she faced the possibility of losing 7,000 Word
documents, 600 spreadsheets, hundreds of PowerPoint presentations and 12 years of federal grant applications. “My PC clicked and I knew, uh-oh, and the computer was dead,” she recalled.

Part A

Text

You’ve probably had that feeling. And you undoubtedly
have heard the warning “Back up your data or else.” For Ms. Grove, the director of the Legacy Counseling Center, a nonprofit support organization in Dallas for people with AIDS, the story had a happy ending because she had backed

up her data on a remote computer — what is commonly
called “in the cloud.” With copies of everything, she could restore all her files.

Part A

Text

While once a difficult task, backing up computer files is now much easier, because the process has become entirely automated with the software that comes with a Windows PC, called Backup and Restore, or a Mac, called Time Machine.

Part A

Text

It eases the problem almost everyone has of developing a habit of backing up files. Jonathan Huberman, president of

Iomega, understands the problem firsthand. Even though his
company makes external hard drives, his wife, “a very smart businesswoman”, wasn’t backing up her files. He learned that

only when a big bush fire forced them to evacuate their San
Diego house.

Part A

Text

Backing up to an external hard drive doesn’t help when your house burns or a strong wind tears off the roof. If your computer is destroyed, your hard drive, stored 10 feet away in a

drawer, is probably gone too.

Part A

Text

Even though a hard drive with a terabyte (or 1,000
gigabytes) of storage can hold thousands of photographs, songs and movies and costs less than $100, storing your files in a distant commercial data center, encrypted and secure, increasingly makes more sense. Cloud backups are appealing

for another reason: as computers become more mobile, such as
laptops, tablets and smartphones, you need to have reliable access to the data anywhere over an Internet connection.

Part A

Text

A growing number of companies now offer these cloudbased backup services. Two of the best-known, Carbonite and

Mozy, offer similar services with different prices, while
Backblaze combines many of the services of Carbonite and Mozy. It offers unlimited backup for $5 a month per computer, and also backs up attached hard drives. …

Part A

Text

… If your computer’s drive crashes, you can either download the

data or receive a DVD for $99 or hard drive by overnight mail
for $189. Backblaze’s backup tool is one of the easiest to use: it just backs up all data files and once completed, backs up new

files on a continual basis (backups of deleted files, as with
most services, are erased after 30 days). (446 words)

Person of the Year 2010
For connecting more than half a billion people and mapping the social relations among them, for creating a new system of exchanging information and for changing

how we live our lives, Mark Elliot Zuckerberg is TIME’ s
2010 Person of the Year.

Part B

Text

Zuckerberg is part of the last generation of human beings
who will remember life before the Internet. He was born in 1984 and grew up in Dobbs Ferry, N.Y., the son of a dentist. Mark has three sisters, the eldest of whom, Randi, is now Facebook’s head of consumer marketing and social-good initiatives. It was a supportive household that produced confident children. The young Mark was “strong-willed and relentless”, according to his father.

Part B

Text

… “For some kids, their questions could be answered with a

simple yes or no,” he says. “For Mark, if he asked for
something, yes by itself would work, but no required much more. If you were going to say no to him, you had better be prepared with a strong argument backed by facts, experiences, logic and reasons. We envisioned him becoming a lawyer one

day, with a near 100% success rate of convincing juries.”

Part B

Text

Almost seven years ago, in February 2004, when
Zuckerberg was a 19-year-old sophomore at Harvard, he started a Web service from his dorm. It was called Thefacebook.com, and it was billed as “an online directory that connects people through social networks at colleges.”

This year, Facebook — now minus the the — added its 550
millionth member. …

Part B

Text

… One out of every dozen people on the planet has a Facebook account. They speak 75 languages and collectively lavish

more than 700 billion minutes on Facebook every month.
Last month the site accounted for 1 out of 4 American page views. Its membership is currently growing at a rate of about 700,000 people a day.

Part B

Text

What just happened? In less than seven years, Zuckerberg wired together a twelfth of humanity into a single network, thereby creating a social entity almost twice as large as the U.S. If Facebook were a country it would be the third largest, behind only China and India. It started out as a lark, a diversion, but it has turned into something real, something that has changed the way human beings relate to one another on a species-wide scale. We are now running our social lives through a for-profit network that, on paper at least, has made Zuckerberg a billionaire six times over.

Part B

Text

Facebook has merged with the social fabric of American
life, and not just American but human life: nearly half of all Americans have a Facebook account, but 70% of Facebook users live outside the U.S. It’s a permanent fact of our global social reality. We have entered the Facebook age, and Mark

Zuckerberg is the man who brought us here.

Part C Phonetics

Sense Groups & Pause

Sense Groups & Pause

Before 1949,/ I used to live in Hong Kong/ and worked as a teacher. (三个意群) I’m busy. (一个句子只包含一个意群) She told me / she has changed her job. (两个意群) 由此可见,一个意群可以是一个词,如yesterday; 一个短语,如by air; 一 个从句,如she has changed her job,或是一个独立的句子,如I’m busy.

Part C Phonetics

Sense Groups & Pause

Sense Groups & Pause
如: an apple, pretty girl, railway station, study hard各 种短语。如: in front of the building, to see a doctor 各种简短的主谓句。如: He looks pale. We’ve given up. I heard you singing. The fact is / that nobody take it seriously. This is the room / where Jordon had ever lived. 2. I glanced at my watch and realized↗that / it was time I↘left. ↗Learning / how to raise the↗sails / is an important part of a sailor’s↘ training. What a wonderful party / we held last↘night!

A good beginning makes a good ending.
When winter comes, it gets colder and colder, and the days get shorter and shorter.

Part C

Writing

Writing for General Purposes: Types of Writing (1): Narration

Before doing the exercise, read the guidelines for writing narration in the following box, as this may be of some help to you.

Writing Strategy
There are four major types of writing: narration, description, exposition and argumentation. When you write a narrative essay, you are telling a story. Narrative essays are told from a defined point of view, often the author’s, so there is a feeling as well as specific and often sensory details provided to get the reader involved in the elements and sequence of the story. The verbs are vivid and precise. The narrative essay makes a point and that point is often defined in the opening sentence, but can also be found as the last sentence in the opening paragraph.

Part C

Writing

Writing for General Purposes: Types of Writing (1): Narration

Before doing the exercise, read the guidelines for writing narration in the following box, as this may be of some help to you.

Writing Strategy
Since a narrative relies on personal experiences, it often is in the
form of a story. When the writer uses this technique, he or she must be sure to include all the conventions of storytelling: plot, character, setting, climax, and ending. It is usually filled with details that are carefully selected to explain, support, or improve the story. All of the details should relate to the main point the writer is attempting to make.

Part C

Writing

Writing for General Purposes: Types of Writing (1): Narration

Task 1 Read the sample narrative in Task 2 and discuss the way the writer tells the story and the lesson drawn from it.
Suggested Answer: The essay begins with a general statement, “Learning something new can be a scary experience.” The author gives sufficient details about the people, place, and events so that readers can get a clear idea of how the author feels about them. In the final paragraph, the author reflects on the meaning or importance of the experience described. The author concludes that learning to swim has helped her to feel more confident about herself in other new situations. This is the point of the story.

Part C

Writing

Writing for General Purposes: Types of Writing (1): Narration

Task 2 Write a narrative essay of about 250 words telling one of your personal stories.
A sample has been written for your reference.

Part C

Writing
Learning to Swim

A sample has been written for your reference.

Learning something new can be a scary experience. One of the hardest things I’ve ever had to do was learn how to swim. After I changed into my bathing suit in the locker room for my first swimming lesson, I stood timidly by the side of the pool waiting for the teacher and other students to show up. After a couple of minutes the teacher came over, and two more students joined us. Although they were both older than me, they didn’t seem to be embarrassed about not knowing how to swim. I began to feel more at ease. We got into the pool, and the teacher had us put on brightly colored water wings to help us stay afloat. One by one, the teacher had us hold on to a kickboard while she pulled it through the water and we kicked.

Part C

Writing

A sample has been written for your reference.

Learning to Swim
Things were not quite that easy for me, but the teacher was very patient. After a few more weeks, when I seemed to have caught on with my legs, she taught me the arm strokes. Sooner than I imagined, things began to feel “right” and I was able to swim! It was a wonderful free feeling — like flying, maybe —to be able to shoot across the water. Learning to swim was not easy for me, but in the end my persistence paid off. Now when I am faced with a new situation I am not so nervous. I may feel uncomfortable to begin with, but I know that as I practice being in that situation and as my skills get better, I will feel more and more comfortable. It is a wonderful, free feeling when you achieve a goal you have set for yourself.

Part C

Writing for Specific Purposes: Itinerary
An itinerary is a detailed list of what you will be doing and where you will be when you plan to go on a journey.
