At the age of 16, her father thought that she had enough schooling and forced her to drop out of school to contribute to the family income. In 1922, with limited education and skills, the future didn’t look bright for Lill. Her father demanded that Lill find a job as soon as possible, but she didn’t have confidence to ask for a job. One day, Lill gathered her courage and knocked on her very first door. She was met by Margaret Costello, the office manager. In her broken English, Lill told her she was interested in the secretarial position. Margaret decided to give her a chance. Margaret sat her down at a typewriter and said, “Lill, let’s see how good you really are.” She directed Lill to type a single letter, and then left. Lill looked at the clock and saw that it was 11:40

am. Everyone would be leaving for lunch at noon. She thought she should at least attempt the letter. On her first try, she got through one line but made four mistakes. She pulled the paper out and threw it away. The clock now read 11:45. “At noon,” she said to herself. “I’ll move out with the crowd, and they will never see me again.” On her second attempt, things didn’t get any better. Again she started over and finally completed the letter, full of mistakes, though. She looked at the clock: 11:55 ----- five minutes to freedom. Just then, Margaret walked in. She came directly over to Lill and put one hand on the desk and the other on the girl’s shoulder. She read the letter and paused. Then she said, “Lill, you are doing good work!” Lill was surprised. She looked at the letter, then up at Margaret. With those simple words of encouragement, her desire to escape disappeared and her confidence began to grow. She thought, “ Well, if she thinks it’s good, then it must be good. I think I’ll stay!” Lill did stay at the Carhartt Overall Company for 51 years, through two world wars and 11 presidents ----- all because someone had the insight to give a shy and uncertain young girl the gift of self-confidence when she knocked on the door. 56. Why didn’t the future look bright for Lill when she left school at an early age? A. Because she was forced to leave school. B. Because her father thought that she had enough schooling. C. Because she had no confidence to ask for a job. D. Because her education and skills were very limited for a job. 57. The underlined sentence in the fourth paragraph means that again. B. Lill would move the letter out in the crowd. C. Lill would throw the paper away without being noticed. D. Lill thought people would never see the mistakes in the letter. 58. How many attempts did Lill make to type the letter? A. One B. Two C. Three D. Four 59. Which of the following can be the best title for this passage? A. Honesty is the best policy C. When you use or take personal tests, what are the factors that lead to job success? There are several personality factors that have been correlated with general success in jobs, although it has also been shown that too much of one factor can cause problems. Intelligence A number of studies have shown that general intelligence often correlates well with job success. Basically, it means that intelligent people are generally good at jobs. Hire bright people and they will be able to do what you ask of them. Conscientiousness(责任心) Conscientiousness has also been shown by several studies as being highly correlated with job success. If a person is conscientious, then they will work hard to complete work they have committed themselves to do. They can also be left alone without need for constant supervision. Openness If you are open to experience, you are ready to challenge yourself and learn and welcome feedback from others, then you will not only learn far more, you will also be thought of as a pleasant person by others who will be more ready to work with you. Unsurprisingly, this tends to make people better at jobs. Agreeableness When paired with conscientiousness, a person who is easy to get on with becomes even more successful in many jobs. Particularly if the work requires working with other people, a person who is disagreeable is not likely to gain good cooperation. Extraversion (外向) If you are outgoing and get your energy from being with other people, you will probably do better in many jobs than others, especially those that require you to work actively with others, whether in managerial or team environment. Other factors have also been shown to be linked with success, although studies showed that these tend to be more related to some jobs more than others, particularly those with more significant social elements. 60. According to the passage the advantage of employing clever people is that ______. A. they can understand their task and do better B. they are bright and won’t make the boss angry C. they can get on well with the manager D. they have a great effect on other employees 61. The underlined word “correlated” in the first paragraph can be replaced by _______.

You had better think twice before posting a new photo or updating it to your Facebook profile. That’s because new research has found that social media use can lower some users’ sense of self-control over their lives. The research, which will be published in The Journal of Consumer Research, was based on the responses of 541 Facebook users in the United States. “Using online social networks can have a positive effect on self-esteem(自尊) and well-being. However, these increased feelings of self-worth can have a damaging effect on behavior.” said researchers Keith Wilcox of Columbia University and Andrew Stephen of the University of Pittsburgh. “Because users care about the image they present to close friends, social network use enhances self-esteem in them who are focused on close friends while searching for information on their social network. This momentary increase in self-esteem leads them to display less self-control after looking through a social network.” In other words, social media users have more self-esteem after using networks like Facebook. However, that momentary improvement in self-esteem lowers their self-control and leads them to do what they want, even if this is not good for them. In particular, the researchers found that social media users were more likely to do too much drinking and eating and have a higher body-mass index. Frequent Facebook users also were more likely to have certain financial problems, including a lower credit score and higher levels of debt. The researchers tied these feelings to the observation that social media users were less likely to exhibit modesty on their profiles, since feedback was not immediate. “These results are worrying given the increased time people spend using social networks, as well as the worldwide proliferation (激增) of access to social networks anywhere, anytime via smartphones and other small devices,” Wilcox and Stephen wrote. “Given that self-control is important for maintaining social order and personal health and happiness, this unnoticeable effect could have widespread impact. This is particularly true for adolescents and young adults who are the heaviest users of social networks and have grown up using social networks as a normal part of their daily lives.” 64. When may social media users lower their self-control?

NYC(New York City) isn’t nearly as crazy or dangerous as movies make it out to be, so relax and enjoy its intrinsic weirdness. Instructions to get there New York City, being a major metropolis, can be accessed in many ways: by plane, train, bus or car. Flying: There are three major airports people usually fly into when traveling to New York. La Guardia is the closest to Manhattan, and is located in the borough of Queens. JFK international Airport is also in Queens, but a little farther from Manhattan. Newark is in New Jersey and is by far the farthest from the city. Train: Amtrak(美国铁路公司) trains arrive constantly in Penn Station, which is located at 7th Avenue and 34th Street. Penn Station is conveniently located in the heart of Manhattan and can be accessed via subway and taxis. Metro North, a light-rail system that runs from Connecticut to New York, is another convenient way to get into the city if you happen to be nearby. Those trains come into Grand Central Station, which is located at 42nd Street and Park Avenue. Bus: For those of you on a tight budget (or who are just plain cheap but have a lot of time on your hands), the bus is always an option. Buses----- run by several companies including Greyhound, Trailways, Peter Pan and New Jersey Transit----- are usually much cheaper than trains and planes, and they are just as convenient, arriving at Port Authority, located at 42nd Street and 8th Avenue. Of course, buses take longer and have smellier bathrooms. Driving: If you choose to drive to New York City, your best bet is to find a garage as soon as you arrive and park your car for the duration of the trip. Driving and parking in the city are both impossible, and will certainly make your trip miserable. Since New York has excellent public

Apart from letting your kids witness the change on themselves, it’s also a good idea to ground their experience with educational background. You could let the kids draw or take notes of their observations until the caterpillar finally transforms into a butterfly. 72 . Caterpillars spin cocoons for themselves using a silk-like substance coming from their bodies. The caterpillar attaches this cocoon to a leaf or twig and wraps its body around it. That’s why it’s best that you provide a hanging stick or branch where the cocoon could be attached to. The best way is to have the caterpillar live on an indoor plant. Do not disturb the cocoon. Once the insect is inside the cocoon, there’s actually nothing else that needs to be done. The best way is to let everybody know that nobody should touch the cocoon; the butterfly is being “formed” inside and if anybody disturbs it, chances are she won’t be able to be formed properly. 73. If the cocoon falls off its twig, don’t panic! The insect is still safe and it will still emerge as a

Know when the butterfly will emerge from the cocoon. The insect usually stays inside the cocoon for 10 to 14 days. The day just before the butterfly emerges, the cocoon will turn either dark, or very clear. Expect the butterfly to come out in the early morning, and be sure to have your kids at hand to witness this event! 75 . Once the butterfly emerges and its wings become strong enough, the next part is to let her go out into the garden. Your kids will certainly appreciate the lesson on transformation, patience, and letting go. Good luck! A. Know the process. B. The best way is to leave it alone. C. Help it come back to its place immediately. D. This will happen very fast, so be ready. E. Get it come out as quickly as possible. F. It is a great opportunity to teach kids about patience. G. Text 10 M: A person may have an idea about himself that will prevent him from doing good work.He may have the idea that he is not capable of it.A child may think he is stupid because he does not understand how to make the most of his mental faculties, or he may accept another person’s mistaken estimate of his ability.Older people may be handicapped by the mistaken belief that they are incapable of learning anything new because of their age. A person who believes that he is incapable will not make a real effort, because he feels that it would be useless. He won’t go at a job with the confidence necessary for success. He is therefore likely to fail, and the failure will strengthen his belief in his incompetence.Alfred Adler, a famous doctor, had an experience which illustrates this. When he was a small boy he got off to a poor start in arithmetic(算术).His teacher got the idea that he had no ability in arithmetic, and told his parents what she thought in order that they would not expect too much of him.In this way, they too developed the idea, “Isn’t it too bad that Alfred can’t do arithmetic?” He accepted their mistaken estimate of his ability, felt that it was useless to try, and was very poor at arithmetic, just as they expected. One day Adler succeeded in solving a problem which none of the other students had been able to solve. This gave him confidence. He rejected the idea that he couldn’t do arithmetic and was determined to show them that he could. His newfound confidence stimulated him to go at arithmetic problems with a new spirit. He now worked with interest, determination and purpose, and he soon became extraordinary good at arithmetic. This experience made him realize that many people have more ability than they think they have, and that lack of success is as often the result of lack of knowledge of how to apply one’s ability, lack of confidence, and lack of determination as it is the result of lack of ability. 1-------20 21-----35 36-----55 56-----75 ACABB CBBDD BDCAB DACBA BAACA CCBBB ADBCA BBCDC BBCBA CBBAC CBAAD CADBD DABAD BABCD AGFBD
