Directions: Revise the following passages. Write your answers on the ANSWER

SHEET. Mark standards: conciseness or variety (40%), key points (30%), word choice and grammar (20%) and handwriting (10%). A. Improve the following paragraph, paying attention to conciseness. Eveline Hill is the major character in James Joyce’s short story “Eveline.” The background information that is related in “Eveline” is that her mother is dead. Her father, though living, is an alcoholic. It is Eveline who has been working hard as a shop assistant to try to support the family. One day, Eveline meets Frank who lives in Buenos Aires. They fall in love and she must make a choice between going with him to have a new life and staying to take care of her father and the family. If she chooses to stay with her father, then the consequence is that she will lose the only love she has ever known and live a miserable life as her mother did. On the other hand, the idea of actually leaving her home to live in a distant unknown country fills her with anxiety and fear. B. Improve the following paragraph, paying attention to variety. He was born in a small village. His father was a teacher in the village school. His mother did the housework. He began to go to his father ’s school at seven. He graduated from it six years later. Then he went to the junior middle school in a nearby town. He studied at a senior middle school in the county seat. He was a good student there. He got good marks at the college entrance examinations. He enrolled in a university in the provincial capital. He studied civil engineering there. He wanted to build a highway for his home village in future. He loved his village very much.

PART IV. SEQUENCING (5×2’=10’)
Directions: The following sentences go together to form a paragraph, but they are in the wrong order. You should read carefully and put them in the right order. Write the correct letter of your choice (A-E) in the proper box. Write your answers on the ANSWER SHEET. A. With a family close by, he or she can ask questions about attendance rules and school costs. B.
