Unless humans act now, seafood may disappear by 2048,
concludes the lead author of a new study that paints a grim picture for ocean and human health. According to the study, the loss of ocean biodiversity(生物多样性) is speeding up, and 29 percent of the seafood species that humans consume have already died out. If the long-term trend continues, in 30 years there will be little or no seafood available for human beings.

The increasing pace of diversity loss thus endangers the “ecosystem services” that many human populations depend on for survival, the study says. The research also found that biodiversity loss is tightly linked to declining water quality,

harmful algal blooms, ocean dead zones, fish kills, and
coastal flooding.

“Biodiversity is a limited resource, and we are going to end up with nothing left if nothing changes, ” said Boris Worm, an assistant professor of marine conservation biology at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Canada. Worm led the

international team of scientists and economists that examined
the role of marine biodiversity in maintaining ecosystem services.

They examined the impact of species loss at local, regional, and global scales and in a variety of ecosystems. Everywhere they looked, they got the same result: the greater

the loss of diversity, the greater the impact on ecosystem
services.

“The good news is that areas managed for improved
diversity can and do recover, raising the possibility that the problem can be reversed (彻底改变) if humans take action. ” Worm said. “Where we protect marine areas around the world we see an increase in species diversity. We also see more

productivity as well as more money being earned from those
ecosystems, ” he said.

(B) Researchers are placing robotic dogs

in the homes of lonely people to determine
whether they can improve the quality of life for humans. Alan Beck, an expert in

human-animal relationship, and Nancy
Edwards, a professor of nursing, are leading the animalassisted study concerning the influence of robotic dogs on old people’s depression, physical activity, and life satisfaction. “No one will argue that an older person is better off being

more active, challenged, or stimulated(刺激). ” Edwards
points out. “The problem is now how we promote that, especially for those without friends or help. A robotic dog

could be a solution. ”
In the study, the robot, called AIBO, is placed for six weeks in the houses of some old people who live alone. Before

placing AIBO in the home, researchers will collect baseline
data for six weeks. These old people will keep a diary to note their feelings and activities before and after AIBO. Then, the

researchers will review the data to determine if it has inspired
any changes in the life for its owner.

“I talk to him all the time, and he responds to my voice, ” says a seventy-year-old lady, “When I’m watching TV, he’ll stay in my arms until he wants to get down. He has a mind of his own. ”

The AIBOs respond to certain orders. The researchers
say they have some advantages over live dogs, especially for old people. Often the elderly are disabled and cannot care for

an animal by walking it or playing with it. A robotic dog
removes exercise and feeling concerns.

“At the beginning, it was believed that no one would relate to the robotic dog, because it was metal and not furry. ” Beck says, “But it’s amazing how quickly we have given up

that belief. ”
“Hopefully, down the road, these robotic dogs could become a more valuable health helper. They will record their

master’s blood pressure,
older people’s minds. ”

end up with nothing left if nothing changes, ” said Boris
Worm, an assistant professor of marine conservation biology at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Canada. Worm led the international team of scientists and economists that examined the role of marine biodiversity in maintaining ecosystem services.

They examined the impact of species loss at local, regional, and global scales and in a variety of ecosystems. Everywhere they looked, they got the same result: the greater the loss of diversity, the greater the impact on ecosystem services.

“The good news is that areas managed for improved diversity can and do recover, raising the possibility that the

problem can be reversed (彻底改变) if humans take action. ”
Worm said. “Where we protect marine areas around the world we see an increase in species diversity. We also see more productivity as well as more money being earned from those ecosystems, ” he said.

Educating girls quite possibly harvests a higher rate of return than any other investment available in the developing world. Women’s education may be all unusual field for

economists(经济学家), but increasing women’s contribution
to development is actually as much an economic as a social issue. And economics, with its focus on incentives(鼓励),

provides an explanation for why so many girls are deprived
of(剥夺) an education.

Parents in low-income countries fail to invest in their daughters because they do not expect them to make an economic contribution to the family: girls grow up only to

marry into somebody else’s family and bear children. Girls
are thus seen as less valuable than boys and are kept at home to do housework while their brothers are sent to school — the prophecy(预言) becomes self-fulfilling, trapping women in a vicious circle(恶性循环) of neglect.

An educated mother, on the other hand, has greater
earning abilities outside the home and faces an entirely different set of choices. She is likely to have fewer but healthier children and can insist on the development of all her children, ensuring that her daughters are given a fair chance. The education of her daughters then makes it much more likely that the next generation of girls, as well as of boys, will be educated and healthy. The vicious circle is thus

transformed into a virtuous circle.

Few will argue that educating women has great social
benefits. But it has enormous economic advantages as well. Most obviously, there is the direct effect of education on the wages of female workers. Wages rise by 10 to 20 percent for each additional year of schooling. Such big returns are

impressive by the standard of other available investments,
but they are just the beginning. Educating women also has a significant impact on health practices, including family

planning.

When I met him, I had a lot of anger inside of me. I’ve lived my whole life in Spanish Harlem, but in my neighborhood, there are shoot-ups all the time. I know kids who have been shot or beaten up. I have friends who ended

up in prison. I could have ended up that way, too, but Mr.
Clark wouldn’t let that happen.

Mr. Clark worked long hours, making sure I did my work. My grades rose. In fact, the scores of our whole class

rose. One day, he took our class to see The Phantom of the
Opera, and it was the first time some kids had ever been out of Harlem. Before the show, he treated us to dinner at a restaurant and taught us not to talk with our mouths full. We did not want to let him down.

Mr. Clark was selected as Disney’s 2000 Teacher of the

Year. He said he would draw three names out of a hat; those
students would go with him to Los Angeles to get the award. But when the time came to draw names, Mr. Clark said, “You’re all going. ”

On graduation day, there were a lot of tears. We didn’t want his class to end. In 2001, he moved to Atlanta, but he always kept in touch with us. He started giving lectures

about education, and wrote a bestselling book based on his
classroom rules, The Essential 55. In 2003, Mr. Clark took some of us on a trip to South Africa to deliver school supplies

and visit the orphanages (孤儿院). It was the most amazing
experience of my life. It’s now my dream to one day start a group of women’s clubs, helping people from all backgrounds.

Ⅳ. Unless humans act now, seafood may disappear by 2048, concludes the lead author of a new study that paints a grim

picture for ocean and human health. According to the study,
the loss of ocean biodiversity(生物多样性) is speeding up, and 29 percent of the seafood species that humans consume have already died out. If the long-term trend continues, in 30 years there will be little or no seafood available for human beings.

The increasing pace of diversity loss thus endangers the “ecosystem services” that many human populations depend on for survival, the study says. The research also found that biodiversity loss is tightly linked to declining water quality,

harmful algal blooms, ocean dead zones, fish kills, and coastal
flooding.

They examined the impact of species loss at local,

regional, and global scales and in a variety of ecosystems.
Everywhere they looked, they got the same result: the greater the loss of diversity, the greater the impact on ecosystem

services.

B. Biodiversity is important for human survival
C. Ocean biodiversity is improving D. The future of ecosystem services 【解析】选B。

2. The underlined word “grim” in Paragraph 1 most probably means______. A. horrible B. clear

C. simple

D. colorful

【解析】选A。 故应选A。

④通过解释说明性的词语(如that is;that is to say;or; namely;in other words)以及标点符号(如破折号、括号等)

3. Which of the following is NOT true according to the text? A. The loss of biodiversity threatens our food supplies.

C. There’s no need to worry about the decline in biodiversity.
D. It’s hopeful to improve biodiversity if action is taken.

A. Causes of overusing fluoride
B. Negative effects of fluoride C. Safe use of fluoride D. The expert’s background information E. No need to worry about fluoride poisoning F. Solutions to improper use of fluoride

I have heard that fluoride can help stop dental decay, but I recently read that it is poisonous. Which of these is true? How can children use fluoride safely? 1. This question is answered by Dr Marcia M. Rich who

practises general dentistry in Newholt. She is also a lecturer
at the University and a writer for the monthly magazine Your Dentist Cares.

2. My answer to the first question is to stress that fluoride works well and is safe when users follow instructions. Young children have a tendency to swallow toothpaste, which is why they should only have a tiny amount of fluoride toothpaste on their toothbrushes. If this simple measure is taken, parents

can be confident that children will be protected against tooth
decay, and come to no harm.

3.
Almost all medicines have an adverse effect-or even be deadly-if they are not taken as directed. So you are right-

fluoride can be poisonous if it is swallowed in very large
quantities. It is for the reason that fluoride supplements can only be obtained on prescription from the doctor or dentist. Please be assured that fluoride overdoses are rare-in fact, I have never heard of any fatal incidents related to fluoride

poisoning.

4.

Scientific studies have shown that fluoride can help to
prevent cavities as long as it is used correctly. If fluoride is abused, there is a risk of illness or even deaths in extreme cases. If a deadly amount of fluoride is taken, immediate first-aid could save a life. A person who has swallowed a large amount of fluoride will probably start vomiting. If so, the patient should be given milk or antacid and taken to the nearest hospital for emergency treatment.

5. Taking too much fluoride while teeth are growing can

lead to a condition called dental fluorosis. The most likely
cause is the swallowing of fluoride toothpaste by young children. It can also be caused by inappropriate use of

fluoride drops or other fluoride supplements, for example
when fluoride is already present in drinking water. DCEFA
