Reading ELIAS’ STORY 埃利埃斯的故事 My name is Elias.译文:我名叫埃利埃斯。 I am a poor black worker in South Africa.译文:我是南非一个贫穷的黑人工人。 The time when I first met Nelson Mandela was a very difficult period of my life. 译文:我第 一次遇到曼德拉的时候是我一生中非常困难的时期。 【注释:这是一个主从复合句, when ? Nelson Mandela 是定语从句, 修饰 the time. The time 在定语从句中作状语, 故用 when 来引导。注意:time 作先行词,前面如有序数词或 last 修饰时,不用关系副词 when, 只能用 that( 可 省 去 ) ; 但 前 面 如 无 序 数 词 或 last, 则 既 可 用 when 又 可 用 that 引 导 。 Eg. 1) Do you still remember the time when we first met? 你 还 记 得 我 们 第 一 次 见 面 的 时 候 吗? 2 ) He came at a time when we were badly in need of help. 正当我们需要帮助时,他来 了 。 3 ) This is the last time that I shall give you a lesson. 这 是 我 最 后 一 次 给 你 们 上 课。 4) The first time that I saw Premier Zhou was 1958.我第一次见周总理是在 1958 年。 】 I was twelve years old.译文:我 12 岁。 It was in 1952 and Mandela was the black lawyer to whom I went for advice. 译 文 : 那 是 在 1952 年,曼德拉是位黑人律师,我去向他求建议。 【注释:to whom I went for advice 是定语 从 句 , 修 饰 前 面 的 先 行 词 the black lawyer. 其 中 go to sb. for advice, 意 为 “ 向 某 人 求 建 议” 。 】 He offered guidance to poor black people on their legal problems.译文:就法律问题, 他向贫穷的黑人提供指导。 【注释: offer sb.sth.(offer sth.to sb.)提供某人某物; provide sth.for sb. 提供某物给某人;supply sth. to sb.给某人提供某物; 试题: .1. A.loved B.cared C.devoted D.affected 解 析 : 1) 选 A. devote oneself/ one's energy/ time/ attention to (doing) sth. 奉 献 于 ...; 献 身 于... 如: Don’ t devote too much time to amusement.不要把太多的时间用在玩乐上。 2)选 C。 be devoted to sb.相当于 love sb 很喜欢某人,句中 devoted 后的 to 移至 whom 之前。 】 He was generous with his time, for which I was grateful.译文:他对时间很大方,我对此非常 感激。 【注释:be generous with 对?大方;对?慷慨。 eg. She was generous with her money. 她很乐于仗义疏财。 】 I needed his help because I had very little education.译文:由于我受到的教育很少,所以我 需要他的帮助。 I began school at six.译文:我 6 岁开始上学。 The school where I studied for only two years was three kilometres away.译文:我上了两年 学,学校有 3 公里远。 【注释:where I studied for only two years 是定语从句,修饰前面的先 行 词 school , 由 于 school 在 定 语 从 句 中 作 逻 辑 状 语 , 所 以 要 用 关 系 副 词 where 引 导。 Eg. 1) This is the house where the great man was born. 这所房子便是那位伟人出生的地 方。 2) She was shown into a small room, where there was a dying man. 她被领进了一间小屋 子, 那里有一个垂死的人。 考题: 1. )The girl arranged to have piano lessons at the training centre with her sister ________ she would stay for an hour. A.where B.who C.which D.what 】 I had to leave because my family could not continue to pay the school fees and the bus fare. 译文:由于家里不能继续支付学费和公交车费用,我只好离开学校。

I could not read or write well. 译 文 : 我 不 能 读 , 也 写 不 好 。 After trying hard, I got a job in a gold mine. 译文:经过努力,我在一个金矿找到一份工 作 。 However, this was a time when one had got to have a passbook to live in Johannesburg. 译文:可是,这是一个你必须拥有居住在约翰内斯堡有色人种身份证的时期。 【注释: this was a time when ? 这是一个?时期。其中 when 引导的是一个定语从句修饰前面的先行 词 a time(时期).】 Sadly I did not have it because I was not born there, and I worried about whether I wouldbe come out of work.译文:遗憾的是我没有这样的身份证,因为我不是出生在那里,于是我担 心是否会失业。 【注释:①out of work 失业 eg. Whenever my boss sees me out of work, he finds something for me to do.无论何时只要我的 老 板 看 见 我 无 事 干 时 , 他 就 找 些 事 情 给 我 做 。 ② worry about 担 心 ; 烦 恼 eg. Don't worry about my illness; what I need is nothing but a few days' rest. 不 要 为 我 的 病 担心, 我只要休息几天就好了。 】 The day when Nelson Mandela helped me was one of my happiest. 译文:纳尔逊·曼德拉帮 助我的那一天便是我最幸福的一天。 【注释:when Nelson Mandela helped me 是定语从句, 修饰先行词 day。 】 He told me how to get the correct papers so I could stay in Johannesburg. 译文: 他告诉我怎 样找到正确的文件以便我能留在约翰内斯堡。I became more hopeful about my future.译文: 我对未来更加有希望。 I never forgot how kind Mandela was.译文:我永远不会忘记曼德拉 是一个多么好的人。 【注释:how kind Mandela was 是一个感叹句。在感叹句中 how 是副词, 后跟形容词或副词;而 what 是形容词,后跟名词。即句型: ① How + adj./adv. + 主语 + 其它。如: How beautiful the girl is! How fast he ran yesterday!; ② How + adj. + a/ an + n. +主语 +其它. 如: How beautiful a girl she is! ③ What a/an + adj. + n. + 主语 +其它。如: What a beautiful girl she is! ④ What + adj. + n. + 主语 + 其它。 What beautiful girls they are! 】 When he organized the ANC Youth League, I joined it as soon as I could. 译文:当他组织非国大青年联盟的时候,我便尽快加入了。 【注释:as soon as I could 尽快;尽早】 He said: “The last thirty years have seen the greatest number of laws stopping our rights and progress, until today we have reached a stage where we have almost no rights at all.”译 文:近三十年来,通过大量的法律来阻止我们的权利和进步,致使今天我们到了几乎没有任 何权利的地步。 【注释:①see, find, witness 等词用物作主语,以拟人手法增添语言色彩,see 可译为“ (在某段时期)发生(某情况) 、经历,经受;见证 eg. 1) They came to the corner which had seen many accidents. 他们来到了那个发生许多事故 的拐角处。 2) The city has seen many changes.城市经历了许多变化。 ②当 stage, situation, state, point, position 等词作先行词时,后面的引导词常用 where 引导定语从句。 】 It was the truth. Black people could not vote or choose their leaders.译文: 那是真的, 黑人不 能选举自己的领导。 【注释:vote vt.& vi. 投票;选举; n. 投票;选举;表决 vote for/ against 投票赞成/反对;vote on 投票表决;vote to do sth.表决做某事; put to the vote 付诸表决,裁 决 eg. ①We all voted for/against your plan.我们都投票赞成/反对你的计划。 ②If we can’t agree ,we’ll have to vote on it. 如果意见不统一,我们就得投票表决。 ③Union members voted to accept management’s offer.工会会员表决接受资方的提议。

⑤ He was voted the most promising new director.他当选为最有前途的新导演。 ⑥ The plan was passed by 6 votes to 3.这项计划以 6 票对 3 票获得通过。 题: Yesterday we________ Mr.Zhang the best teacher in our school. A.shouted B.refused C.agreed D.voted 】 They could not get the jobs they wanted.译文: 他们得不到想要的工作。The parts of town in which they had to live were decided by white people. 译文:他们要居住在城镇的哪一地方由 白人决定。 【注释:关系代词前面的介词取决于①与先行词的常规搭配,如本句中 in the parts of town,故要用 in + which; ②与谓语动词的常规搭配,如 He has nobody to whom he can turn.句中的 to whom 中的 to,常与 turn 一起构成 turn to sb. (for help)短语,故关系代词 whom 前则用 to, 其实就是动词后面的介 词前置于关系代词前面了。 】 The places outside the towns where they were sent to live were the poorest parts of South Africa.译文: 他们所居住的城市外部是南非最贫穷的地方。 【注释: where they were sent to live 是定语从句,修饰先行词 places.】 No one could grow food there. 译文:人们在那里找不到 食物吃。In fact as Nelson Mandela said:译文:事实上,正如曼德拉所说的: “? we were put into a position in which we had either to accept we were less important, or fight the government.译文:我们已到了这么地步:要么必须接受我们无足轻重,要么与政 府进行斗争。 【注释:either ? or ? 要么?要么? eg. 1) Either we go now or we remain here forever.要么我们现在走,要么我们永远在这呆下 去. 注意:either?or?连接两个并列主语时, 谓语动词要与 or 后面的主语在人称和数上保持 一致。 如: 2) Either you or Herb has been invited. 你和赫伯都被邀请了。 】 We chose to attack the laws.译文:我们决定向法律发动攻击。 We first broke the law in a way which was peaceful; when this was not allowed ? only then did we decide to answer violence with violence.” 译文: 我们首先以一种和平的方式违背法律; 当不允许这样做的时候??只有到了这个时候,我们才决定以暴力对抗暴力。 【注释:① which was peaceful 是定语从句,which 作主语,所以不能在其前面加介词 in;只有当 way 作从句中的状语时,才能在 which 前加 in,即 in which,或用 that,或什么都不用来引导定语 从句。如:I don’t know the way (in which/ that) he delt with the matter. ②only 放在句首修饰 状语(通常是副词、介词短语或从句)时,句子需要部分倒装。 Eg. 1) Only in this way can you finish work on time. 2) Onely when he came back from school did I go to bed last night. 3) Only recently have I thought of them. 试题: 1) Only when I left my parents for Italy ____ how much I loved them. A. she realized B. she had realized C. had she realized D. did she realize 】 As a matter of fact, I do not like violence ? 译文:事实上,我不喜欢暴力。 【 注 释 : as a matter of fact 事 实 上 】 but in 1963 I helped him blow up some government buildings. 译文:可是在 1963 年,我帮他炸掉了一些政府大楼。 【注释: blow up 使充气;爆炸;放大;形成 eg. I have blown up the tire. 我已把轮胎充了 气。 】 It was very dangerous because if I was caught I could be put in prison. 译文: 那是很危

A 在 ? 方 面 比 得 上 B 。 如: None of us can equal her, either in beauty or as a dancer. ⑵ be equal to + n./ doing sth. 等于;与??相等;胜任? eg. He doesn’t seem equal to meeting our demands. ⑶ be without equal/ have no equal 无与伦比;无敌 eg. He is a player without equal.
