American scientists have developed the first material that repairs itself. The material is a kind of plastic that has been engineered to fill breaks（断裂）in its surface. Plastics are used today in everything from airplane wings(机翼) to hundreds of objects found at home. Scientists wanted to find a way to make objects made of plastic last longer. The researchers hope their new discovery can be used to make objects that are difficult or impossible to replace. The surface of plastic objects breaks over time. Very small breaks develop every time a plastic object is used. The researchers wanted to find out how to stop plastic from developing small breaks that weaken and destroy it. They found the answer in the chemical structure of plastic itself. Plastic is made of monomers（单体）. These monomers link together to form polymers（聚合物）. Polymers give plastic its ability to be shaped and its strength. The research team found a way to make plastic that contains very small balloons filled with monomer liquid. When the new plastic cracks, the monomer liquid is let out and flows into the crack. Thus the break is repaired. The repaired plastic has seventy-five percent of the strength of undamaged plastic. The new self-repairing plastic is not yet ready for production. But it has several possible uses. One could be in space vehicles where parts cannot be repaired or replaced. Another possible use might be in bridges. And it could be used in people, to replace bone joints that have become broken or damaged. 16. We know from the passage that the repair is done as________. A. the cracked plastic parts are changed B. the plastic is made C. the liquid is put into the plastic cracks D. the plastic cracks 17. The scientists are planning to use the new material in space vehicles, bridges and people because________. A. the plastic parts in them are required to last longer B. the plastic parts in them are easily broken or damaged C. the new material cannot be used elsewhere D. they want to experiment in these places first 18. What can we know about the new material talked about in the passage? A. It is a kind of liquid that is commonly used. B. It is more difficult to make than common plastics. C. Its surface does not crack so easily as other ones. D. It makes it difficult or impossible to replace plastic objects.
It was a village in India. The people were poor. However, they were not unhappy. After all, their forefathers(祖先) had lived in the same way for centuries. Then one day, some visitors from the city arrived. They told the villagers there were some people elsewhere who liked to eat frog’s legs. However, they did not have enough frogs of their own, and so they wanted to buy frogs from other places. This seemed like money for nothing(免费的). There were millions of frogs in the fields around, and they were no use to the villagers. All they had to do was catch them.
Agreement was reached, and the children were sent into the fields to catch frogs. Every week a truck arrived to collect the catch and hand over the money. For the first time, the people were able to dream of a better future. But the dream didn’t last long. The change was hardly noticed at first, but it seemed as if the crops were not doing so well. More worrying was that the children fell ill more often, and, there seemed to be more insects around lately. The villagers decided that they couldn’t just wait to see the crops failing and the children getting weak. They would have to use the money earned to buy pesticides(杀虫 剂) and medicines. Soon there was no money left. Then the people realized what was happening. It was the frog. They hadn’t been useless. They had been doing an important job---eating insects. Now with so many frogs killed, the insects were increasing more rapidly. They were damaging the crops and spreading diseases. Now, the people are still poor. But in the evenings they sit in the village square and listen to sounds of insects and frogs. These sounds of the night now have a much deeper meaning. 19. From paragraph 1 we learn that the villagers __________. A. worked very hard for centuries B. dreamed of having a better life C. were poor but somewhat content D. lived a different life from their forefathers /ancestors 20. What does the underlined word “catch” in paragraph 2 mean? A. get B. hold C. carry D. the frogs caught by children 21. What might be the cause of the children’s sickness? A. the crops didn’t do well B. there were too many insects C. the visitors brought in diseases D. the pesticides were overused 22. What can we infer from the last sentence of the text? A. Happiness comes from peaceful life in the country B. Health is more important than money C. The harmony between man and nature is important D. good old day will never be forgotten
When Chinese people are spending the Spring Festival, westerners wonder which is the symbol of the year of yang. Is it the Year of the Goat or the Year of the Sheep? But the word for goats and sheep in Chinese is “yang”. When westerners want to translate a children’s TV show into English. Is it translated as Pleasant Goat and Big Big Wolf or Pleasant Sheep and Big Big Wolf ? So what’s the difference between a sheep and a goat? For westerners, sheep are seen as harmless while goats aren’t easy to control. There is a similar problem when the Year of the Rat/Mouse comes. Westerners think that mice are generally seen as cute animals, while rats are seen as dirty ones. Dragons and pigs also cause the same confusion(困惑). In westerners’ opinion,
dragons are harmful to humans, but in China, they are usually symbols of good luck, so are pigs. However, in the west, pigs are dirty and fat. Westerners are still trying to work out exactly what year they’re celebrating. Which represents the Year of yang, Sheep or Goat? A Chinese word could translate to both. And the same things also take place on other animals, such as dragon, snake and monkey. Some Net users pointed out that this is not the only animal on the Chinese lunar calendar（农历）. “It seems like westerners could be confused every year. What should they call the Year of niu, the Ox, Cow or Bull?” a Net user said. 23. What do westerners think of sheep? A. Dirty and fat B. Harmless C. Harmful D. Cute 24. What are Chinese people’s opinion about pigs? A. Symbol of good luck B. Difficult to control C. Dirty and fat D. Clever 25. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage? A. westerners like dragons B. westerners like rats C. westerners like mice D. westerners know how to call the Year of niu 26. What is the passage mainly about? A. The different hobbies between China and western countries B. The different animals between China and western countries C. The different festivals between China and western countries D. The different culture between China and western countries
Edward Wilson is America’s, if not the world’s, leading naturalist. In The Future of Life, he takes us on a tour of the world’s natural resources. How are they used? What has been lost? What remains and is it able to continue with the present speed of use? Wilson also points out the need to understand fully the biodiversity(生物多样性)of our earth. Wilson begins with an open letter to the pioneer in environment protection, Henry David Thoreau(亨利·戴维·梭罗). He compares today’s Walden Pond（瓦尔登湖） with that of Thoreau’s day. Wilson will use such comparisons for the rest of the book. The problem is clear: man has done great damage to his home over the years. Can the earth, with human help, be made to return to biodiversity levels that will be able to support us in the future? Biodiversity, Wilson argues, is the key to settling many problems the earth faces today. Even our agricultural crops can gain advantages from it. A mere hundred species(物种) are the basis of our food supply, of which but twenty carry the load.
Wilson suggests changing this situation by looking into ten thousand species that could be made use of, which will be a way to reduce the clearing of the natural homes of plants and animals to enlarge farming areas. At the end of the book, Wilson discusses the importance of human values in considering the environment. If you are to continue to live on the earth, you may well read and act on the ideas in this book. 27. We learn from the text that Wilson cares most about ______. A. the environment for plants B. the biodiversity of our earth C. the wastes of natural resources D. the importance of human values 28. How many species are most important to our present food supply? A. Twenty B. Eighty C. One hundred D. Ten thousand 29. Wilson suggests that one way to keep biodiversity is to _______. A. learn how to farm scientifically B. build homes for some dying species C. make it clear what to eat D. use more species for food 30. We can infer that the text is _______. A. a description of natural resources B. a research report C. a book review D. an introduction to a scientist.

Everyone sleeps. However, taking the time to develop a sleep habit is probably the last thing on your mind and some sleep advice simply can’t be forgotten. 31 . Watching TV until you fall asleep It has nothing to do with what you watch —TV news isn’t a better pre-sleep choice than TV series. 32 . The bright light keeps you awake all the night. So even if you nod off （打盹）(in front of the TV, for example), you probably won’t stay asleep for long. Sleeping with pets 33 . They get comfortable, and then they move. This goes on all night, and whether you admit it or not, it interrupts your ability to get the level of sleep needed to feel rested. Eating fatty, heavy foods too close to bedtime Heartburn (胃痛) strikes anyone of any age, but it’s the most common GI disorder (胃肠失调) in older adults. If you’ve ever tried to go to sleep after eating a fatty meal, you’ve probably found the discomfort of stomach preventing you from falling asleep or staying asleep.
34 . Remember how poorly you sleep when you have a fever—turning over and over again, never really feeling rested? Well, heavy exercise too close to bedtime has the same effect—it raises your body temperature so that your sleep is disturbed until your body temperature drops to normal, which may take several hours. Accepting snoring (打呼噜) as normal sleep behavior Snoring may seem as common as breathing, but it’s considered the biggest sleep killer, and it’s linked to several causes: sleeping on your back, being overweight, having a cold, drinking, or taking drugs. 35 . For the snorer, it disturbs sleep by awakening him/her every so often in order to breathe normally. For the partner, the noise can be unbearable. A. Exercising heavily too close to bedtime B. Here are some suggestions you’ll need to follow C. Reducing your body temperature before bedtime D. Rather it’s the TV’s bright light that is the criminal E. Here are some bad habits you need to get rid of F. Most seriously, it’s caused by a dangerous illness G. Pets sleep most of the day, and they move a lot when sleeping 第三部分 英语知识运用 （共两节，满分 45） 第一节 完形填空（共 20 小题；每小题 1.5 分，满分 30 分）

Dear editor, I’m a student in Senior Two. We have conducted a survey — “Whom do you turn to when in trouble?” Here are the results. Most of the students will go to their classmates or friends when in trouble. They’re almost of the same age, so they can talk with and understand each other easily. Some students will tell their teachers or parents about their troubles and ask for their help as the teachers and parents have rich experience and love them very much. They can be trusted by these students. Only a few students solve their problems all by themselves. They hate to talk with others and can’ t get on well with others. They have few friends. As far as I am concerned, when in trouble we’d better ask our teachers, parents, friends or classmates for help. Yours, Li Hua
