I don’t know how to thank you enough. I feel that money alone cannot repay you, so I have made this little purse with my own hands, as a sign of my gratitude. I hope you will accept it.” The doctor stood up and said coldly, “Madam, a little present like that is very nice between friends, but a doctor needs to be paid properly for what he has done.” The lady was so surprised and hurt so much that she could not reply for a moment. Then she said quietly, “Perhaps you will tell me how much your fee is?” “Fifty pounds”, he answered. The lady opened the little purse and took out four fifty-pound bank notes. B In the United States, when one becomes rich, he wants people to know it. And even if he does not become very rich, he wants people to think that he is. That is what “keeping up with the Joneses” is about. It is the story of someone who tried to look as rich as his neighbors. The expression was first used in 1913 by a young American called Arthur Momand. He told this story about himself. He began earning $ 125 a week at the age of 23. That was a lot of money in those days. He got married and moved with his wife to a very wealthy neighborhood outside New York City. When he saw that rich people rode horses, Momand went horseback riding every day. When he saw that rich people had servants, Momand and his wife also hired a servant and gave big parties for their new neighbors. It was like a race, but one could never finish his race because one was always trying to keep up. The race ended for Momand and his wife when they could no longer pay for their new way of life. They moved back to an apartment in New York City. Momand looked around him and noticed that many people do things just to keep up with rich lifestyle of their neighbors. He saw the funny side of it and started to write a series of short stories. He called it “Keeping up with the Joneses” because “Jones” is a very common name in the United States. “Keeping up with the Joneses” came to mean keeping up with rich lifestyle of the people around you. Momand’s series appeared in different newspapers across the country for over 28 years. People never seem to get tired of keeping up with the Joneses. And there are “Joneses” in every city of the world. But one must get tired of trying to keep up with the Joneses because no matter what one does, Mr. Jones always seems to be ahead.

It can be inferred (推断) from the story that rich people like to ________. A. live outside New York City B. live in New York city C. live in apartments D. have many neighbors 66. Arthur Momand used the name “Jones” in his series of short stories because “Jones” is _____. A. an important name B. a popular name in the United States C. his neighbor’s name D. not a good name 67. According to the writer, it is ________ to keep up with the Joneses. A. correct B. interesting C. impossible D. good C Maybe ten-year-old Elizabeth put it best when she said to her father, “But, Dad, you can’t be healthy if you’re dead.” Dad, in a hurry to get home before dark so he could go for a run, had forgotten to wear his safety belt- a mistake 75% of the US population make every day. The big question is why. There have been many myths about safety belts ever since their first appearance in cars some forty years ago. The following are three of the most common. Myth Number One: It’s best to be “thrown clear” of a serious accident. Truth: Sorry, but any accident serious enough to “throw you clear” is also going to be serious enough to give you a very bad landing. And chances are that you’ll have traveled through a wind shield （挡风玻璃）or door to do it. Studies show that chances of dying after a car accident are twenty-five times greater in cases where people are “thrown clear". Myth Number Two: Safety belts “trap” people in cars that are burning or sinking in water. Truth: Sorry again, but studies show that people knocked unconscious（昏迷）due to not wearing safety belts have a greater chance of dying in these accidents. People wearing safety belts are usually protected to the point of having a clear head to free themselves from such dangerous situations, not to be trapped in them. Myth Number Three: Safety belts aren’t needed at speeds of less than 30 miles per hour. Truth: When two cars traveling at 30 mph hit each other, an unbelted driver would meet the windshield with a force equal to diving headfirst into the ground from a height of 10 meters. 68. Why did Elizabeth say to her father, “But, Dad, you can’t be healthy if you’re dead”? A. He was driving at great speed. B. He was running across the street. C. He didn’t have his safety belt on. D. He didn’t take his medicine on time. 69. The reason Father was in a hurry to get home was that he __________, A. wasn’t feeling very well B. hated to drive in the dark C. wanted to take some exercise D. didn’t want to be caught by the police 70. According to the text, the “thrown clear” of a serious accident is very dangerous because you _________. A. may be knocked down by other cars B. may get seriously hurt being thrown out of the car C. may find it impossible to get away from the seat D. may get caught in the car door 71. D “Keep your eyes on the ball.” That is good advice when you are on the playing field, and good advice for everyday life. “Keep your mind on what’s important,” is the way I’d put it. But people are funny. They think too much about the details. I had a secretary once. She was very hardworking. I ran a school and people used to call up to enroll for courses. Berry used to get angry at the phone. “If they keep on ringing, I’ll never get my typing done!” she’d shout. People just don’t see the big picture. One evening, after leaving work, I was sitting next to a man on the train. I was feeling tired. My eyes fell on the paper he had spread out in front of him. You know how you feel to read over someone’s shoulder? I read the page and leaned back. I guessed I was waiting for him to turn it. After a while, I realized—he wasn’t turning the page. He just kept on reading. Now if you knew the page he was reading, you’d know that there weren’t many words on the page to read anyway. The layout was mostly pictures. So I turned to the man and said,” You know, you really read very slowly.” “What do you mean?” he asked. “Well,” I told him, “I read the page in about a minute, and you have taken about ten. And you are still reading. You know,” I went on “If you learned to read faster, you could get more reading done.” He remained silent for a minute or two. “If I read too fast, my paper wouldn’t last me to my station.” 73. The writer wasn’t satisfied with his secretary because ___. A. she didn’t put first thing first B. she was too busy C. she was easy to get angry D. she couldn’t finish her work on time 74. The train rider read newspaper ___. A. to take in information B. to enjoy pictures C. to save time D. to kill time 75. The writer thinks that people seem to need a sense of ___. A. what to read first B. how to read fast C. what is important D. what is funny 76. The passage is mainly about the writer’s opinion on people’s ___. A. judgment B. work C. life D. habits E Long ago in a small town, there was a place known as the House of 1,000 Mirrors. A small, happy little dog learned of this place and decided to visit. When he arrived, he bounced(跳) happily up the stairs to the doorway of the house. He looked through the doorway with his ears lifted high and his tail wagging as fast as it could. To his great surprise, he found himself staring at 1,000 other happy little dogs with their tails wagging just as his. He smiled a great smile, and was answered with 1,000 great smiles just as warm and friendly. As he left the house, he thought to himself, “ This is a wonderful place. I will come back and visit often.” In this same village, another little dog, who was not quite as happy as the first one, decided to visit the house. He slowly climbed the stairs and hung his head low as he looked into the door. When he saw the 1,000 unfriendly looking dogs staring back at him, he growled at them and was horrified to see 1,000 little dogs growling back at him. As he left, he thought to himself, “This is a horrible place, and I will never go back there again.”

In my opinion, you’d better not. For one reason, it’s easily for you to develop some bad habits once you have it, such as playing computer game, seeing movies and so on, which will be a waste time. For other reason, buying a laptop computer don’t mean you can study well. If you want to make a progress, you need to be devote and work hard. Whether you had a computer or not is not that important.
