He was overjoyed when he opened it and read the letter inside. ―Bigwoods Football Pools (赌博公司) would like to congratulate you. You have won half a million pounds.‖ Frank suddenly came to life. The cigarette fell from his lips as he let out a shout that could be heard halfway down the street. At 11:30 Frank arrived at work. ―Please explain why you’re so late,‖ his boss said. ―Go and jump in the lake,‖ replied Frank. ―I’ve just come into a little money so this is goodbye. Find yourself someone else to shout at.‖ That evening Frank was smoking a very expensive Havana cigar when a knock was heard on the door. He rushed to the door. Your house and possession are valuable and must be properly protected. When you buy a lock, you buy time. The best prevention is delay and noise which could mean discovery. When you leave it — lock it! First of all, fit security locks to all doors and windows and a safety chain on the front door. Secondly, use them! If you have any ladders or tools, don’t leave them lying about in the garden, lock them away. ―Safe‖ or ―secret‖ places for keys and valuables are not reliable — nine times out of ten, they are the first place a thief will look. When you move house… When you move into a new home even if it is fitted with security locks, change them. You don’t know who else may have keys. Never let strangers into your house. identity and look at it carefully — if you are still not satisfied, don’t let the person in. Valuables need special protection Valuables should really be given special protection — preferably by leaving them with your bank. A small security safe works too, but not to the most determined burglar. It is also important to keep an up-to-date list of valuables and their descriptions. In the case of fine art, paintings, or jewelry, color photographs can sometimes be of assistance to the police if you are unfortunate enough to have them stolen. Enter the details on the back of the pictures. But don’t keep such documents in your house, keep them at the bank or with your insurance company. Going on holiday? Don’t talk about your holidays and future plans loudly in public. Do remember to cancel the milk and newspapers and also to draw curtains back. Operate a ―Good Neighbor‖ program to ensure that mail is taken in, the house is checked regularly and that lights are put on. Call at your local police station and tell them you are going away. Make sure that they know how to contact you in case of trouble. Don’t leave cash or valuables in the house — take them with you or put them in the bank. 55. To educate people on prevention of burglars. C The singer, Mick Jagger, of the Rolling Stones sings a song that tells people they can’t always get what they want but if we try sometimes we can get what we need. The past years in my life my parents have told me this saying many times. I’ve always complained about the quote (引语). Although over time I have told myself to learn from it. This year my girlfriend flew off to college in West Palm, Florida. This has been a killer for me because I haven’t been able to see her and she is having a rough time in school. The last two months have been hard but we are working through it. I have been trying to get my dad to buy me B. change the locks D. stay away from strangers B. Keeping your valuables at the bank. D. Giving a list of your valuables to the police.

56. Which is the safest way to protect your valuables?

57. When you are away for holidays, you ______.

a plane ticket to go down there. My dad told me if I brought him some money he would help me pay for the ticket. I started to complain to him because I had no way of getting any money to give him. I spent several days and nights thinking of ways to earn money to go see my girlfriend. I finally came to the conclusion that I would get a job and work hard to earn some money to give to my dad. I applied to Safeway and I ended up getting the job. I have been working at Safeway for about a month now and work hard to earn money to go to see my girlfriend. The other day my mom had surprised me and told me that she asked her boss if she could use their business miles (旅费) to buy me a ticket down to Florida for two weeks. I was very thankful and told her I would help pay for anything that I have to. The thought of me working hard and getting a job showed my mom that I really cared and was trying my best to be a successful person. I believe that you can’t always get what you want but if you try sometimes, you get what you need. 59. The author’s parents often told him the saying quoted from the song because ______. A. he liked to complain to them about his life B. they expected him to learn from the singer C. he always wanted to get everything he wanted D. they tried to educate him to do things for himself 60. What does the underlined word ―killer‖ in the second paragraph refer to? A. A person who kills purposely. B. Something that is very difficult. C. Something that is quite troublesome. D. A person who treats women very badly. 61. What can we infer from the passage? A. The author was lazy and unwilling to work hard. B. The author’s father was too mean to give him money. C. The author’s actual action won support from his mother. D. The author was unable to tear himself away from his girlfriend. 62. By writing the passage, the author tries to show ______. A. we can do nothing without money B. fathers are strict while mothers are kind C. it’s hard for parents to bring up their children D. we should try to rely on ourselves for everything D You either have it, or you don’t — a sense of direction. But why is it that some people could find their way across the Sahara without a map, while others can lose themselves in the next street? Scientists say we’re all born with a sense of direction, but it is not properly understood how it works. One theory is that people with a good sense of direction have simply worked harder at developing it. Research being carried out at Liverpool University supports this idea and suggests that if we don’t use it, we lose it.
7

―Children as young as seven have the ability to find their way around,‖ says Jim Martland, Research Director of the project. ―However, if they are not allowed out alone or are taken everywhere by car, they never develop the skills.‖ Jim Martland also emphasizes that young people should be taught certain skills to improve their sense of direction. He makes the following suggestions: If you are using a map, turn it so it relates to the way you are facing. If you leave your bike in a strange place, put it near something like a big stone or a tree. Note landmarks on the route as you go away from your bike. When you return, go back along the same route. Simplify the way of finding your direction by using lines such as streets in a town, streams, or walls in the countryside to guide you. Count your steps so that you know how far you have gone and note any landmarks such as tower blocks or hills which can help to find out where you are. Now you need never get lost again! 63. Scientists believe that ______. A. people never lose their sense of direction B. everybody has a sense of direction from birth C. some babies are born with a sense of direction D. people learn a sense of direction as they grow older 64. What is true of seven-year-old children according to the passage? A. They never have a sense of direction without maps. B. They have a sense of direction and can find their way around. C. They should never be allowed out alone if they lack a sense of direction. D. They can develop a good sense of direction if they are driven around in a car. 65. What should you do if you leave your bike in a strange place? A. Tie it to a tree so as to prevent it from being stolen. B. Draw a map of the route to help remember where it is. C. Remember something easily recognizable on the route. D. Avoid taking the same route when you come back to it. 66. According to the passage, the best way to find your way around is to ______. A. ask policemen for directions B. count the number of landmarks that you see C. use walls, streams, and streets to guide yourself D. remember your route by looking out for steps and stairs E In modern society there is a great deal of argument about competition. Some value it highly, believing that it is responsible for social progress and prosperity (繁荣), others say that competition is bad; that it sets one person against another; that it leads to unfriendly relationship between people.

8

I have taught many children who held the belief that their self–worth relied on how well they performed at tennis and other skills. For them, playing well and winning are often life–and–death affairs. In their single–minded pursuit of success, the development of many other human qualities is sadly forgotten. However, while some seem to be lost in the desire to succeed, others take an opposite attitude. In a culture which values only the winner and pays no attention to the ordinary players, they strongly blame competition. Among the most vocal are youngsters who have suffered under competitive pressures from their parents or society. Teaching these young people, I often observe in them a desire to fail. They seem to seek failure by not trying to win or achieve success. By not trying, they always have an excuse: ―I may have lost, but it doesn’t matter because I really didn’t try.‖ What is not usually admitted by themselves is the belief that if they had really tried and lost, that would mean a lot. Such a loss would be a measure of their worth. Clearly, this belief is the same as that of the true competitors who try to prove themselves. Both are based on the mistaken belief that one’s self–respect relies on how well one performs in comparison with others. Both are afraid of not being valued. Only as this basic and often troublesome fear begins to dissolve (缓解) can we discover a new meaning in competition. 67. What does this passage mainly talk about? A. Competition helps to set up self-respect. B. Failures are necessary experiences in competition. C. Opinions about competition are different among people. D. Competition is harmful to personal quality development. 68. What does the underlined phrase ―the most vocal‖ in Paragraph 3 most probably mean? A. Those who try their best to win. B. Those who value competition most highly. C. Those who rely on others most for success. D. Those who are against competition most strongly. 69. What is the similar belief of the true competitors and those with a desire to fail? A. One’s worth lies in his performance compared with others. B. One’s achievement is determined by his particular skills. C. One’s success in competition needs great efforts. D. One’s success is based on how hard he has tried. 70. Which point of view may the author agree to? A. Fear of failure should be removed in competition. B. Winning should be a life-and-death matter. C. Competition should be encouraged. D. Every effort should be paid back.

(请注意词数要求) [1] People with many different relationships often use small talk. But the most common people who use small talk are those who don’t know each other at all. It is also common for people who are only acquaintances (熟人), often called a ―friend of a friend’’, to use small talk. [2] There are certain ―safe‖ topics that people usually make small talk about. The weather is probably the number one thing. Sometimes even friends and family members discuss the weather when they meet or start a conversation. Another topic that is generally safe is current events, such as sports news and entertainment news. If there is something that you and the other speaker have in common, that may also be acceptable to talk about. Negative comments about another person shouldn’t be made: when you don’t know a person well you cannot be sure who his friends are. [3] People make small talk just about anywhere. Most often, small talk occurs in places where people are waiting for something. For example, you might chat with another person who is waiting for the bus to arrive. Some social events (such as a party) require small talk among guests who do not know each other very well. [4] The most common time for small talk is the first time you meet someone. However, the next time you see each other you might just smile and say nothing. If someone is reading a book or writing a letter at the bus stop it is not appropriate to start a conversation, either. [5] There are different reasons why people use small talk. The first is to break an uncomfortable silence. Another reason, however, is simply to kill time. That is why it is so common to make small talk when people are waiting for something. 71. What is the most common topic in small talk? However, there are still lots of problems in the school. Very often, we can see an empty classroom with lights on. It is easy to find evidence of wasting water. Water keeps running after students use it. And it is common to see students throw away the soft drink bottles. What’s worse, many students still use the non-environmentally friendly lunch boxes, causing the ―white pollution‖. In my opinion, many students lack the sense of protecting the environment. They form the bad habit of wasting in daily life. To solve the problem, I have some suggestions. For one thing, students can do small things, such as collecting used items for recycling, turning off the lights and saving water. For another, schools are supposed to tell students not to waste.
