Do you want to know what the life in space is? Life in space is much ___1____ from life on Earth. How do the astronauts(宇航员) live， work and play in low gravity (失重状态) ? Space food is more like the food we eat here on Earth. In the past, astronauts could eat ___2___ small pieces of dried food. But now the space station ___3___ water, microwave ovens(微波炉) and iceboxes. So astronauts can eat more everyday food, like fruit, vegetables and ice cream. As there’s no gravity in space, so they have to tie themselves to their beds when they sleep, or they’ll fly away! That ____4____ very interesting! In space, the astronauts exercise on bikes and other machines for ___5____ two hours every day. This is more important in space than on earth. That way, they can still be ___6____ when they get back home. In low gravity, water does not come out of a tap, and it flies in a bubble (气泡)! Astronauts use a tube（管 子） take baths. And when they have ____7___, they use a vacuum (真空的) tube to take the dirty water off their to bodies. How do they go to the WC in space? They use a special “air WC”. It uses air, not water, to take everything _____8_____. What do astronauts do when they aren’t working? They read books, play cards, 1isten to music or ____9___ e-mails to their friends and family. Sometimes they just sit and look out of the window. Doesn’t that ____10____ much funnier? But is it much fun if you could see Earth out of your window, with a sunset or sunrise every 45 minutes? Supplementary Reading 2 Read the passage and then answer the questions. We will be living on the planet Mars. Our own planet, Earth, is becoming more and more crowded and polluted. Hopefully, we can start again and build a better world on Mars. Here is what life might be like. First of all, transport should be much better. At present, our spacecraft are too slow to carry large numbers of people to Mars---- it takes months. However, by the year 2100, the journey might take only a very short time in space shuttles that travels at half the speed of light! It might take us two or three days to get to Mars. Secondly, humans need food, water and air to survive. Scientists should be able to develop plants that can grow on Mars. These plants will produce the food and air that we need. However, nobody is sure if these plants can produce water for us. Thirdly, gravity will be a problem for the early settlers on Mars. The gravity on Mars is only about three-eighths of that on Earth. This may be dangerous because we could easily jump too high and float away into space. To prevent this, humans on Mars have to wear special boots to make themselves heavier. Life on Mars will be much better than that on Earth in many ways. People will have more space. We may even live in a large building with only 10 bedrooms. Many people believe that robots will do most of our work, so we have more time for our hobbies. There will probably be no school on Mars. Every student will have a computer at home which is connected to the Internet. They can study, do their homework and take exams in online schools. Each student will also have their own online teacher called “e-teacher”. However, in some ways, life on Mars may not be better than that on Earth today. Food will not be the same--meals will probably be in the form of pills and will not be as delicious as they are today. Also, space travel will make many people feel ill. The spaceship will travel fast but the journey to Mars will probably be very uncomfortable. 1. What will our Earth be like in about 90 years? ________________________________________________________________ 2. It takes our spaceships months to carry people to Mars at present, doesn’t it? ________________________________________________________________ 3. What should scientists do to make it possible for humans to live on Mars? ________________________________________________________________ 4. How should humans prevent themselves from easily jumping too high and flying away? ________________________________________________________________ 5. Why can we have more time for our hobbies if we live on Mars? ________________________________________________________________ 6. What do you think of online schools on Mars? ________________________________________________________________
Key:① It will be more and more crowded and polluted. ③ They should develop plants that can be grown on Mars. ④ They should have to wear special shoes to make themselves heavier. ⑤ Because robots will do most of our work. ⑥ It must be very interesting/exciting/surprising/amazing.
② Yes, it does.

What will the future life be like? I think we will be able to travel faster and safer around the world and into apace. Maybe one day we can work in Beijing, sleep in Xi’an and visit the moon for a holiday. We will have new energy(能量) that doesn’t make pollution. Possibly, people will find ways to use cleaner things, such as sea water, to make energy without polluting the earth. We will have machines that copy everything in the future. Put a cake on the machine and it makes a new one. If the machine is like a fax–machine (传真机), we can send food and presents to our friends easily. We will have clever robots that work for us, and the robots can bring us useful things and take away our rubbish. Now we have to press a key or type a word to make a machine work. But in the future, if we think of something, the machine can make it for us. The machine can understand our ideas. We will be able to go into computer games and films, and everything will feel real. We will be able to make our homes like forests or sunny beaches or anything we want. Perhaps, one day we will be able to collect our dreams and put then on DVDs.

Can you imagine astronauts’ everyday life in space? They also need to eat, sleep, exercise and relax. They do the same things as us, but they do them differently. On Earth, we put food on a plate. Gravity holds the food down and keeps it on a place. But there is almost no gravity in space, so food can float away, and astronauts must eat carefully. Sleeping is very different in space. Some astronauts like to float in the air, but most like to be in a sleeping bag. They tie the bag to a wall so that they won’t float away at night. Exercise is very important in space. On Earth, your legs carry your body, but in space, astronauts float, so they must exercise for thirty minutes every day. After a day’s work, astronauts relax. They may listen to music, read, watch films, play games, or talk to their friends and families on the radio. Sometimes they just enjoy floating in the air. 1 .On Earth , food can be put on a plate because _____ A . there is gravity B . the food is light C . the food is heavy D . the plate is heavy enough 2 . In space , the food is ___. A . on a plate B . in a glass C . floating in the air D . in a bag 3 . Why do astronauts tie the sleeping bag to a wall ? A . Because in that way they won’t float away . B. Because that makes them sleep well . C . Because they can’t get to sleep if they don’t do that . D . Because the sleeping bag is not safe enough . 4 . After reading the fourth paragraph , we can know it is about _____. A . how astronauts eat in space . B . how astronauts sleep in space . C . how astronauts exercise in space . D . what astronauts do for relaxing . 5 . What’s the main idea of the passage? __________________________________________________________
