Unit 9 Voices of the Earth summit(integrating skills) Hello, everyone. Today I very pleased to have an opportunity to talk about some of my teaching ideas. My topic is voice of earth summit taken from Unit 9, and it is made up of three parts. Part 1 My understanding of this lesson The analysis of the teaching material: This lesson is integrating skills, and it plays a very important part in the English teaching of this unit. By studying this Lesson, Ss can improve their listening and speaking ability and learn more about environment protection. The Ss should do some listening, speaking and writing, too. Of course, let the students know the importance of protecting our earth. Teaching Aims: 1. Learn and master the following words: defend, incorrect, affect, advise. 2. Train the students listening and speaking abilities. 3. Learn to write an evaluation paragraph. Teaching Important Points: 1. Master the useful words and phrases appearing in this period. 2. Learn to support an opinion both in speaking and writing. Teaching Difficult Point: How to help the students finish each task and improve their skills to use language. Part 2 My teaching theories, methods and aids Before dealing with this lesson, I’ ll do my best to carry out the following theories: Make the Ss the real masters in class while the teacher himself acts as director; Combine the language structures with the language functions; Let the students receive some moral education while they are learning the English language. Teaching Methods: 1. Oral practice to train the students' speaking ability. 2. Written work to train the students' writing ability. 3. Individual, pair or group work to make every student work in class. Teaching Aids: 1. a tape recorder 2. the blackboard Part 3 Teaching steps / procedures I have designed the following steps to train their ability of listening, speaking, writing, especially ability. The entire steps are: Warming up, Listening, Practice, Writing, Prepare a speech, and homework. Step 1 Warming up We’ve read a passage in this unit about the Earth Summit and environmental problems and solutions. 1. Competition: Divide the whole class into four large groups and have Ss list as many ways as possible to protect the environment: Laws should be made to make pollution illegal. Try to be clean in our daily activities. Use environmentally safe products. Dispose of trash properly. Recycle household waste, yard waste, and hazardous chemicals.

Don’t pour waste water into rivers and lakes without being cleaned. Recycle the used battery. Use paper bags instead of plastic bags. 2. Report the ways to stop pollution in class. We know the Earth Summit mainly talks about environment problems and solutions. Experts from all over the world are welcome to the Earth Summit, speaking about different topics and discussing new ways to solve old problems. Today we are going to listen to the voices of the Earth Summit. Step 2 Listening Listen to the speeches from the Earth Summit and complete the outlines on the book. Pair work: Retell the speeches at the Earth Summit. Step 3 Practice Discussion Topic: Do you agree with what they are saying? Have Ss write down the thoughts, comments, opinions and questions. Outline: Write an outline for your speech and then give the speech in class. Step 4 Writing English weekly writing. Study the words and phrases may help you (See P72). Go over Tips for preparing a speech. Make sure you know how to give a good speech. Think about your audience. Who are they? What are they interested in? What do they want to know? What do they already know? Step 5 Prepare a speech Research the topic carefully and organize the material. Practice in front of a mirror or together a friend. Step 6 homework Write a passage to tell what you think the most serious environmental problem is, and explain why you think the problem is serious and what you think should be done to solve it.
