Good afternoon, everybody. My topic is First Impression taken from unit3, book5 in New Senior English. My talk consists of four parts. Part1 The Analy

sis of the Material 1. Status and Function: The title of the reading is First Impression, which plays a very important part in English teaching of this unit. This passage is a spacemail written by Li Qiang about his exciting and unforgettable tour in the year AD3008. By learning this lesson, the students can not only imagine what the future will be like, but also learn how to use some important words, phrase and sentence patterns. What’s more, the students can practice their reading skills, such as skimming, scanning and careful reading. 2. Teaching Aims a. knowledge aims: To learn how to use the mastery words, phrases and sentence patterns; To learn something about the future life. b. Ability aims: To cultivate the students’ autonomous learning ability, cooperative learning ability. To develop students’ reading skills, such as making prediction and drawing inferences from the context. c. Emotional aims: To encourage the students to participate in the class activities and cultivate their teamwork spirit. To reinforce the sense of environment protection. 3. Key Points and Difficult Points To learn how to use the mastery words, phrases and sentence patterns. To develop the students’ reading skills, such as making prediction and drawing inferences from the context. 4. Teaching Aids: Muti-media computer, tape recorder Part2 Teaching Method According to the analysis above, I’ll analyze the text with questions, tables, retelling job and summary. So I mainly use the Communicative Method and Task-based Method. Part3 Preparations before Class Ask the students to preview the lesson and prepare some information. 1. Imagine the difference between the life at present and in the future. 2. Make a list the problems human beings are facing today. 3. Which Problems do you think people will have overcome in one thousand years? Which one do you think will still exist in AD3008? Part4 Teaching Procedure

I’ll finish this lesson in five steps. Step1 Warming up &Pre-reading I’ll show them some beautiful pictures about the future life, such as special house, transports, people’s life, and show them a short video about the alien taken form a science movie. Then I will discuss the answer in the “Preparations before Class” with them. Purpose: to stimulate the students’ interest and naturally lead to the reading passage. Step2 Reading Activity1 Scanning 1. The students are asked to listen to the tape and scan the text quickly and fill in the blanks. Who 1. Li Qiang 2. Wang Ping 3. Wang Ping’s parents. When AD3008 What Travel in the future Activity2 Skimming. The students are asked to skim the text quickly and match the main idea for each paragraph. Para.1 Li Oiang had a rest in a strange house. Para.2 Li Qiang learnt how to ride a hovering carriage Para.3 What Li Qiang felt when he was in a time capsule. Para.4 Li Qiang took up a prize and went to the future by time capsule Purpose: Train the students’ scanning and skimming skills. Activity 3 Careful Reading For paragraph 1&2: pictures watching and question asking. Get the students to watch several pictures about the future life and then find the answers of the following questions. 1. Why did I go into the future? 2. What is a “time lag”? 3. What did my guide do when I felt nervous? 4. Where did they arrive by the time capsule? Purpose: The pictures can arouse the students’ interest. The students can be trained to learn the careful reading skills by answering these questions. For paragraphs 3: Question answering. Ask the students to answer the questions. 1. How did I feel as soon as I landed in the future? 2. How did Wang Ping solve this problem? 3. How to drive a hovering carriage? Purpose: By doing this activity, I can train the students’ language organizing ability and careful reading skilled.

For paragraph 4: Retelling job The students are asked to fill in the blanks.. That is a large, _____ and ____ room. It had a brown floor, soft lighting and a _____ ____ which is actually trees. The ________ of the trees are used to _____ oxygen. By _____ a _____ on the computer screen, ______such as tables and chairs ____ from under the floor as if by _____. Purpose: Through the blanks they fill, the students can understand what this paragraph is talking about. It is fairly easy and will be offered to the less talented students. This activity can train the students’ finding detailed information ability and make them familiar with the new words and sentence patterns . Step 3 Summary Ask the students to summarize the text and fill the table. Before the journey Li felt ____ and _____at first, as a result he suffered from _____. During the journey (1) Li was ____ safely into the future in a _____. ________by the new surroundings, Li was hit by the ____ of fresh During the journey(2) air and his head ______. Purpose: This activity is designed to train the students the ability of summary and they can understand it clearly through the words they fill. Step 4 Discussion Activity: Thinking and Writing The students will be divided into several groups to discuss the following questions. What’s the writer’s attitude towards the future, optimistic or pessimistic? How do you know? Purpose: The whole passage implies that we should do something to protect our environment and our future. This activity is to cheer the students to think deeply about our future life and the environment protection. Step 5 Homework 1. Finish Ex2 and Ex4 on P19. 2. Review the key sentence in the text. 3. Review the new words of Unit 3 and get ready for the dictation. Purpose: This activity is designed to train their writing skills and stimulate the students to become aware of the importance of protecting our environment. So the sense of environment protecting is close to the students’ daily life. Also, this activity can make the students keep the key sentence and new words in mind.
