B Years ago, I lived in a building in a large city. The next building was only a few feet away from mine. There was a woman living there, and I had never met her, yet I could see she sat by her window each afternoon, sewing or reading. After several months had gone by, I began to notice that her window was dirty. Everything was unclear through the dirty window. I would say to myself. “I wonder why that woman doesn’t wash her window. It really looks terrible.” One bright morning I decided to clean my flat, including washing the window on the inside. Late in the afternoon when I finished the cleaning, I sat down by the window with a cup of coffee for a rest. What a surprise! Across the way, the woman sitting by her window was clearly visible (看见). Her window was clean! Then it dawned on me. I had been criticizing (批评) her dirty window, but all the time I was watching hers through my own dirty window. That was quite an important lesson for me. How often had I looked at and criticized others through the dirty window of my heart, through my own shortcomings? Since then, whenever I wanted to judge (评判) someone, I asked myself first, “Am I looking at him through my own dirty window?” I try to clean the window of my own world so that I may see the world about me more clearly. 59. The writer couldn’t see everything clearly through the window because ________. A. the woman’s window was dirty B. the writer was near-sighted C. the woman lived nearby D. the writer’s window was dirty 60. “It dawned on me” probably means “________”. A. I knew it grew light B. it cheered me up C. I began to understand it D. it began to get dark 61. It’s clear that ________. A. one must judge himself before he judges others B. one should often make his windows clean C. one shouldn’t criticize others very often D. one must look at others through his dirty windows C The World Health Organization (WHO) planned to study the relationship between the eating habits of the people and the disease. Two doctors were chosen to make the study. They flew to Africa south of the Sahara and during the next two months visited ten countries. They found that serious diseases of poor eating, often mistaken for other diseases, existed in all parts of Africa. The diseases were similar and could therefore all be named kwashiorkor. The diseased children are usually from one to four years old. As the illness progresses, the child’s stomach becomes swollen by liquid collecting in the body. The skin changes color and may break out in open sores（疼痛）. The hair changes color and starts to fall out. The patient loses all interest in his surroundings and even in food, and becomes so weak that he wants to lie down all the time. Stomach liquids are no longer produced.
The doctors reasoned that kwashiorkor was found in the young children of this age in many parts of Africa because of lack of milk or meat. Their mothers, after stopping their breastfeeding, gave them foods full of starches（淀粉）instead of greatly needed proteins. They found that the addition of milk to the food of the children suffering from kwashiorkor saved many lives. The unbelievable thing about kwashiorkor is that the very existence of the disease—which has been killing thousands of children for centuries—was not even recognized in Latin America as recently as ten years ago. The deaths of those children were mistakenly listed as due to other diseases. It was the WHO’s work in Africa that led to the discovery of the problem in Central America. 63. From the passage we learn that kwashiorkor is a disease caused by __________ . A. poor living conditions C. breastfeeding A. it has no symptoms at all B. it is hard to identify signs of it C. it doesn’t last long enough for careful observation D. it is hardly different from other diseases 65. What is mentioned as a simple but reasonable way of curing this disease? A. Taking a special medicine. C. Having more meat or milk. 66. What’s the best title for the article? A. Milk and Meat Are Daily Necessities B. Kwashiorkor and Improper Eating Habits C. A New Form of Illness in Africa and Latin America D. A Case of Eating Habits D In 1885, a young doctor named Conan Doyle opened offices in London. He wanted to be a successful doctor, but for some reasons he never found enough patients. To pass the time, be began to write stories and send them to the newspapers. Conan Doyle’s stories were about a clever detective, Sherlock Holmes. Conan Doyle wrote that Sherlock Holmes lived in Baker Street in London, and people with problems came to Sherlock Holmes with their problems, too. He was able to solve mysteries that the cleverest policemen in England were unable to figure out. Sometimes Sherlock Holmes could solve a mystery without leaving his chair. He listened carefully to the information his client（委托人） gave and figured out the answer. At other times he spent days or weeks looking for clues. Sherlock Holmes traveled to different cities and countries to solve the mysteries. Sometimes he wore disguises, pretending to be an old man, or a sailor. Holmes did anything to find out the answer to the mysteries he was working on. His best friend Dr. Watson kept him company （陪伴） on most of his adventures. Sherlock Holmes is the most famous detective in English literature, but many people don’t understand that he is a fictional character, not a real person. The English post offices report that people still send mail to Sherlock Holmes in Baker Street. Even he gets more than 2,000 letters every year.
B. lack of proteins in food D. lack of food
64. It is difficult to discover kwashiorkor because ____________________ .
B. Avoiding any food containing starch. D. Taking medicine full of proteins.
67. Conan Doyle began to write stories perhaps because . A. he wanted to tell something about his patients B. he wasn’t good at medicine C. he wanted to make more money D. most people were strong at the time 68. It can be inferred from the passage that . A. many people asked Conan Doyle to solve their mysteries B. Conan Doyle got a lot of experience in solving mysteries C. Conan Doyle was a person with great literary quality and talent. D. Conan Doyle was able to help those who came to see him with their problems 69. The phrase “wore disguises” in the fourth paragraph means . A. introduced oneself B. was in old clothes C. changed one’s clothes or one’s appearance D. seemed to be poor and helpless 70. Which of the following is TRUE? A. In 1885, a young doctor named Conan Doyle opened offices in Paris. B. The character Conan Doyle wrote about was thought to be a real person by many people. C. Many rich parents would rather send their children abroad to receive education than have them educated in China. As every coin has two sides, studying abroad is not an exception( 例外 ). There are advantages for people to attend school abroad. In the first place, he can use the foreign language in his daily life so that his ability in the second language may be greatly improved, as it is obvious that there is no better chance to improve second-language than living in the country where it is spoken. While studying in a foreign country, he will most likely meet many others from overseas and it is possible to make friends from all over the world. This is not only exciting on the social level, but could lead to important overseas contacts in his career as well. He can get familiar with the knowledge updated in science and get the chance to use the first-rate facilities (设备) available. In this way, there is every chance that he is able to widen his horizon (眼界) and broaden his mind. Of course, attending schools abroad may bring about a series of problems. The most serious problem is language barrier (障碍). Most of the students who go abroad don’t have enough skills in the language spoken there. As a result, on arriving there, they will find it difficult to understand what the teachers say. Besides, for lack of knowledge of the customs of the local people, they may constantly run into trouble in dealing with various situations. Therefore, given an opportunity to attend a school abroad, one must consider both sides of the factors carefully before making up his mind. Dear Annie, We haven’t seen each other for a long time. I’m glad to introduce the school I’m studying in to you. Our school begins classes before 8 a.m. every day. The size of classes is bigger than that of classes in my old school and the number of the students in each class is more than 50 on average. I have so many classes and heavy homework that it is a struggle for me to attend activities after class. I also have no much time to learn by myself. But most of the students study very hard to enter key universities, which are their dreams. Not only teachers but also classmates are very kind to me. They give me a lot of help. I feel very lucky to experience this different way of life. I achieved a lot. I hope you have a chance to come here and study with me together.

Text 1 M: It’s such a beautiful day. Why not go ride on a boat? W: I’d love to. But I have a lot of homework to do. Text 2 W: Look at the clouds in the sky! It looks like rain. I’ll go and get my umbrella. M: Don’t worry. The radio says that it’s going to be fine this afternoon. Text 3 M: Would you like some carrots and beans, Mary? W: No, I don’t like them. I hate vegetables. M: But darling, you have to eat them. They are good for your health. Text 4 M: When do you start your first lesson every day? W: 8:00, but we have a 20-minute morning reading lesson before that. Text 5 W: You seem very tired lately. Is there anything wrong? M: It’s my new job. It’s hard and challenging. All those figures and facts nearly drive me mad. I hope I can get used to it soon. Text 6 M: So you’re back from London, Nancy.
W: Yes, I had a special dinner there. M: Oh? How special? Can you tell me about it? W: OK. We had dinner with my old friend Smith. He is an officer in London. When we arrived at the dining hall, all the lights went out. At that time I was a little angry. But then a waiter gave us an explanation, and we laughed. M: Why did the lights go out? W: Because it’s a restaurant for the blind. Text 7 W: Are you all right, Mark? Is anything wrong? M: I’m so homesick, I could die. All this studying, all this pressure, I just can’t stand it. W: It takes time to get used to all this. M: Yes. But, you know, I lost sleep last night. W: It seems like you’ve really got the blues. Have you heard from home recently? M: It’s been almost a month since I got a letter from my mum. I’m going to write to her and explain the situation. By the way, do you have an envelope that I can borrow? W: Sorry, I don’t have any. I hardly ever send any letters. M: The bookstore is closed today. Is there another place I can get some stamps? W: You can go to the post office on North Street to buy stamps. Text 8 W: We can have eight days off at last. What are you going to do? M: You know traveling is my hobby. Let’s go to Beijing and have our holidays there. W: That’s a good idea. Beijing is one of the most modern cities in the world. There are many places of interest there. And the 2008 Olympic Games were held there. M: How should we go there, by plane or by train? W: I think we should go there by train. It’s comfortable and cheap. M: Though it’s cheaper, it’s slower. Let’s go by plane. We can look down at the Great Wall of China from the plane. W: OK. Let’s go by plane. M: Then we’d better book the tickets first. I have heard it is very difficult to get air tickets to Beijing. W: That’s right. And we’d better book the rooms too. Text 9 W: Look! It’s snowing. Winter is here at last. M: It’s really cold today. W: Yes, you have to get used to it. The weather’s going to be like this for the next three months. M: Then I’m going to Florida. Can you tell me about your weather diary? Why do you make notes about the different types of weather? W: Because it’s interesting to see what the weather is like at different times and on different days. For example, we had very interesting weather on the 28th of April. M: Really? W: Yes. On the 28th of April, it was sunny while I was eating my breakfast. I’m sure everybody thought it would be a sunny day. M: What happened? W: At lunch, the sky became cloudy. In the afternoon, at four, the sky was black and it rained
heavily. That was really an unusual day. M: I think you should be a weather reporter. You know a lot about the weather. W: Thanks. I want to be a weather reporter when I finish school. It’s an exciting job. Text 10 I saw an accident this morning while I was standing at the corner of Green Street and Fifth Avenue. A woman who was picking up her son was driving a red sports car down Green Street very fast. While she was driving, she was talking on her mobile phone. At the same time, a man who had finished work was driving a blue truck along Fifth Avenue very slowly. While he was driving, he was drinking a bottle of cola and eating a sandwich. While the man was driving through the intersection, the woman in the sports car didn’t stop at the traffic light. As a result, the car crashed into the truck. Both the woman and the man were very angry. While they were shouting at each other, the police came. Fortunately, they were not hurt badly.
