And with that he let out a whistle(口哨),―Here, Dolly!‖ he called.
[]

Out from the doghouse and down the ramp(斜坡) ran Dolly followed by four little balls of fur. The little boy pressed his face against the chain link fence(铁丝网). His eyes danced with delight. As the dogs made their way to the fence, the little boy noticed something else moving inside the doghouse. Slowly another little ball appeared; this one clearly smaller. Down the ramp it slid(滑倒). Then in a somewhat awkward manner the little pup began hobbling(跛行) toward the others, doing its best to catch up… ―I want that one,‖ the little boy said, pointing to the little puppy.

B Heavy rains have caused disasters across China this summer, bringing the worst landslides(塌方,泥石流) in decades. The most deadly disaster happened on August 8 when a big landslide hit Zhouqu County in Gansu province, killing at least 1,407 people. On August 18, landslides hit Gongshan, a town in northwestern Yunnan. At least 38 people were killed and 54 are missing. Heavy rains also caused landslides in several counties in Sichuan province. People were forced to evacuate(撤离) to safe places. Landslides and devastation Landslides take place when dirt and rocks slide down a slope(斜坡) together. Sometimes these landslides are small, and hardly noticeable. Other times however, they can be massive(庞大的), involving the entire side of a

mountain. Landslides can be caused by a number of different things. Often rain, which adds weight to the side of a slope, can cause one. Other times they might be caused by erosion(侵蚀).When a stream slowly removes the base of a slope, it weakens the entire side of the mountain. As a slide moves down a mountain slope, it can pick up great speed and energy. Some slides travel at a speed of 300km an hour. The resulting winds can be so powerful that they are known to strip(剥离) the leaves off surrounding trees. Earthquakes and landslides Some experts think the landslides in Sichuan were related to the magnitude-8.0 Wenchuan earthquake on May 12, 2008. The quake has caused a change in the structure of the Earth’s surface, making it more likely that land will slide in the rain, according to geologist Xu Qiang of the Chengdu University of Technology. Landslides pose(造成) threats to 140 cities and towns in the country, one quarter of which are in Sichuan, said Wei Fangqiang, a researcher with the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Landslide prevention If you want to avoid being a landslide victim, the easiest thing to do is avoid living on slopes or close to mountains. If you live in a landslide-threatened area, try not to water the slopes if possible. If there are large rocks on the slopes above your house, remove them so that they don’t cause damage if they fall. It might also be helpful to plant trees on the slopes. Over time, the tree roots may make the soil firmer. 55. The landslides around China are mentioned at the beginning of the article to A. warn travelers to keep away from those places B. show that the environment in China is getting worse C. introduce the topic of landslides D. express concern for those affected by landslides 56. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the article? A. Most landslides are too small to be detected. B. Heavy rains are the only cause of landslides. C. The dirt and rocks from a landslide can strip the leaves off surrounding trees. D. Some experts believe that earthquakes could make landslides more likely to happen. 57. Which of the following is the right way to avoid becoming a landslide victim? A. Living on a mountain top. B. Watering the slopes you live beside. C. Removing large rocks on the slopes. D. Planting trees around your house. 58. What is the main idea of the article? A. Landslides and their prevention. B. The after-effects of the Wenchuan earthquake. C. The mostly deadly disaster in China. .

They grabbed(拿起) their tea cups. ―What quote?‖ Mary asked. ―Well, maybe I should rather say it is a story,‖ aunt said, ―I heard there was this wise teacher who took all his students for tea. They were surprised that all the cups on the table were different. They all took a cup and started drinking their tea, each looking at the cups of others. The teacher let them do that for a while and then said: ― Do you notice your behavior? You are all looking at each other’s tea cup and I can see some of you with the chipped(有殊缺的) ones are even envious(羡慕的) of the finer cups of others. Is this not so?‖ The students agreed, amused by their own behavior. ―You may have wondered why you all had different cups, but I put them here on purpose. You see----they represent life itself. Life is like that tea–---and the cups are like the physical circumstances(状况) of your life. You all got the same thing in your cups-tea. And yet you cannot truly enjoy it in your envy of another’s cup. It’s just the same with life. You forget to enjoy your own life when you concentrate on envying the circumstances of someone else’s life. So now, close your eyes, and taste your own tea. Really taste it. And tell me – did it matter from which cup it came from? ‖ Aunt finished telling her short tea story and they all sat in silence for a while, savoring(品尝) their tea. The teacher’s message to the students was that A. life is actually hard and boring for everyone B. it is natural to be envious of the lives of others C. everyone should learn to enjoy life D. people act differently in different circumstances E Two Christmas traditions have come under attack in recent years from environmentalists: Christmas cards and Christmas trees. Paper cards are seen as wasteful and, for some people, going card-free is another way of going green. They also argue that in a world of e-mail, Skype, Face book and Twitter, people are in touch all the time anyway; they no longer need the yearly card that connects them with long lost friends. If you want to send Christmas greetings, there are free e-cards, which get the job done with no postage(邮费) or wasted paper. However, especially for people who didn’t grow up with e-mail, there is something missing from a Christmas e-mail. The first Christmas cards appeared in London in 1843 and were designed by the same man who had introduced the world’s first postage stamp three years earlier. His name was Sir Henry Cole. They rose in popularity throughout the 20th century. Many people sent cards that were sold for charity. The most famous of these are the ones sold for UNICEF. In the UK this year, in the three weeks before Christmas, the post office expects to handle 100 million cards every day. Environmental awareness also means that nowadays many people recycle their cards; this helps raise money to plant more trees, as well as recreating more paper. When we think of trees at Christmas, there is one that immediately springs(跃入) to mind – the evergreen tree that people decorate with ornaments and place their presents under. The custom dates back almost a thousand years to Germany. Nowadays 33 to 36 million Christmas trees are produced in America and 50 to 60 million in Europe each year. Some trees are sold live with roots and soil so people can plant them later and reuse them next year. Some people prefer artificial(人造的) trees as they are reusable and much cheaper than their natural alternative. However, environmentalists point out that they are made from petroleum(石油) products and so have many contamination(污染) issues. 67. What is the point of the article? A. To introduce the history of two typical Christmas traditions. B. To point out the problems in some traditional ways of celebrating Christmas. C. To analyze how two Christmas traditions grew in popularity. D. To explain the debate between environmentalists and traditionalists regarding some Christmas traditions. 68. Some people suggest getting rid of paper cards because a. they cannot be recycled . .

The majority of the students hold the view that they should take all kinds of exercise every day, so they keep doing exercises, play table tennis or basketball as often as possible. They think that it can help build up students’ character as well as bodies. Meanwhile it helps decline the opportunity to suffer diseases. In addition, as a result of exercise, they often feel dynamic, which contributes to their efficient study. As a matter of fact, many of the top students in the class are on fire for sports. Whereas, the minority of the students don’t show any interest in sports and games. They say they suffer from a heavy workload, which takes plenty of efforts to accomplish. Thus, they don’t have enough time for sleeping well and have to stay in the classroom doing their homework. So for the sake of their marks, they are not willing to go out for the activities. In my terms, sports and games are a necessity in our life and also to our study. As a saying goes well, all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. Now let’s go in for sports and games.
