短文： 1. A STORE owner was putting a sign above his door that read “Puppies (小狗) for Sale”. Soon a little boy came to the store and asked: “How much are you going to sell those puppies for?” The store owner replied: “From $30 to $50.” The little boy took out some change (零钱). “I have $2.37, so can I look at them?” The store owner smiled and whistled (吹口哨). Out of the back of the store came his dog followed by five little puppies. One puppy was lagging (落后) behind. Immediately the little boy noticed the puppy. “What’s wrong with that little dog?” he asked. The man explained that there was something wrong with its legs. The little boy got really excited and said: “That’s the puppy I want to buy!” “ If you
really want him, I’ll give him to you,” the man replied. The little boy got upset: “I don’t want you to give him to me. He is worth every bit as much as the other dogs. I will give you $2.37 now and 50 cents every month until I have him paid for.” “This puppy’s never going to be able to run, jump and play like other puppies,” the man said. The little boy looked up at the man and said: “Well, I don’t run so well myself and the little puppy will need someone who understands.” Tears welled up in the man’s eyes. “Son, I hope and pray that each and every one of these puppies will have an owner like you,” he smiled and said. Questions: 1. Why did the boy come to the store? 2. Which dog did the boy like? 3. Why did the boy like the dog? 4. What can we know about the boy? Why do you say so?
2. LONG ago in a small village, there was a place known as the House of 1,000 Mirrors. A small, happy little dog learned of this place and decided to visit. When he arrived, he bounced (跳) happily up the stairs to the doorway (门口) of the house. He looked through the doorway with his ears lifted high and his tail wagging as fast as it could. To his great surprise, he found himself looking at 1,000 other happy little dogs with their tails wagging just as fast as his. He smiled a great smile, and was answered with 1,000 great smiles just as warm and friendly. As he left the house, he thought to himself: “This is a wonderful place. I will come back and visit often.” In this same village, another little dog, who was not quite as happy as the first one, decided to visit the house. He slowly climbed the stairs and hung (垂下) his head low as he looked into the door. When he saw the 1,000 unfriendly-looking dogs looking back at him, he growled at them and was afraid to see 1,000 little dogs growling back at him. As he left, he thought to himself: “That is a terrible place. I will never go back there again.” All the faces in the world are mirrors. What kind of reflections (反映) do you see in the faces of people you meet?
