A In the United States, when one becomes rich, he wants people to know it. And even if he does not become very rich, he wants people to think that he is. That is what “keeping up with the Joneses” is about. It is the story of someone who tried to look as rich as his neighbors. The expression was first used in 1913 by a young American called Arthur Momand. He told this story about himself. He began earning $ 125 a week at the age of 23. That was a lot of money in those days. He got married and moved with his wife to a very wealthy neighborhood outside New York City. When he saw that rich people rode horses, Momand went horseback riding every day. When he saw that rich people had servants, Momand and his wife also hired a servant and gave big parties for their new neighbours. It was like a race, but one could never finish his race because one was always trying to keep up. The race ended for Momand and his wife when they could no longer pay for their new way of life. They moved back to an apartment in New York City. Momand looked around him and noticed that many people do things just to keep up with rich lifestyle of their neighbors. He saw the funny side of it and started to write a series of short stories. He called it “Keeping up with the Joneses” because “Jones” is a very common name in the United States. “Keeping up with the Joneses” came to mean keeping up with rich lifestyle of the people around you. Momand’s series appeared in different newspapers across the country for over 28 years. People never seem to get tired of keeping up with the Joneses. And there are “Joneses” in every city of the
world. But one must get tired of trying to keep up with the Joneses because no matter what one does, Mr. Jones always seems to be ahead. 56. Some people want to keep up with the Joneses because they ________. A. want to be as rich as their neighbours B. want others to know or to think that they are rich C. don’t want others to know they are rich D. want to be happy 57. It can be inferred (推断) from the story that rich people like to ________. A. live outside New York City B. live in New York city C. live in apartments D. have many neighbors 58. From the text, we know that _______. A. All the neighbors of Momand like to keep up with the Joneses. B. All of his neighbors don’t want to keep up with rich lifestyles. C. Momand never seems to get tired of keeping up with the Joneses. D. Momand became very rich and returned to the wealthy neighborhood. . 59. Arthur Momand used the name “Jones” in his series of short stories because “Jones” is ________. A. an important name B. a popular name in the United States C. his neighbor’s name D. not a good name 60. According to the writer, it is ________ to keep up with the Joneses. A. correct B. interesting C. impossible D. good B What makes a house a home? Not size, of course. I've been in some of the grandest houses in America, and it's readily apparent that no one lives there. Earlier this year, I had dinner in a mud hut in Ethiopia, where we sat on chairs next to the hostess's bed --- a home that had more warmth than any house I've been in since. Now John Edwards is exploring what makes a house a home in his just-released Home: The Blueprints of Our Lives. There Edwards writes, “This is a book about homes, the values they rest on, the dreams they are filled with, and the people they have shaped. The houses and circumstances are different, but much of what you find inside will be familiar.” Whether you’re sitting in an airport right now, waiting to fly to your childhood home for Thanksgiving, or in your own home waiting for the relatives to arrive, you know what he's talking about. We’ve lived in our townhouse for 21 years. The loose windows make noise in the wind. The fireplace is so shallow it holds only one log. The kitchen window offers a view of the world passing by. It’s where friends sit on the kitchen counter drinking wine while dinner is being fixed. I lived there for only 18 years, but it will always be my true home. Even the lamp in the west living room window, which I could see far down the road when driving home late at night, still shines. While all this talk about childhood memories can be warm and comforting, home is whom you’re with, not where you are. As Edwards writes, “Home is family. Home is safety. Home is faith.” Happy homecoming！ 61. What would be the best title for the text? A. Home Means Everything B. What Makes a House Home C. Home Is Not Where You Are D. The Importance of a House 62. About the book Home: The Blueprints of Our Lives, we know that _________. A. it was the description of Edwards's houses B. it is mainly about houses in America
C. it helps us understand the concept of home D. it was written by the author of the text 63. What did the author mainly mean when he mentioned the loose windows and the shallow fireplace? A. His house was too old to live in. B. He missed the feelings of home. C. He regretted living there. D. He missed his old friends too much. 64. It can be inferred according to the text that _________. A. the author's family were very rich B. every happy home is exactly the same C. the author has been living a hard life D. the author and Edwards hold similar ideas 65. According to the text, home is _________. Which of the following is NOT true? A. a big house B. your family C. your faith D. who you are with
C Sometimes children do not do what their parents tell them to do. When this happens, a parent tries to help the child to do the right thing. When this does not work, the parent usually punishes the child. There are many things that a parent can do. One thing that people have done is to spank the child. When a parent spanks a child, they will use their hand or a hard object to strike them on their bottom. This is meant to show the child that they have done something wrong. One parent remembers being spanked when he was a child. His parents used a wooden spoon. When he spanked his own children with his hand, he saw that he put a red mark on his child’s leg. He never did that again. One problem with spanking is that it teaches the child to hit someone when they do not like what the other person is doing. Another problem with spanking is that the parent is usually an gry and can hit the child too hard. Sometimes parents will use spanking for everything and not try other ways to get the child to do the right thing. Many parents are not sure of what to do instead of spanking. Some people think that their religion（宗 教）tells them that spanking is okay. Some think that the law lets them do it. The courts (法院) say that parents have the right to teach their children how to behave. Other things should be tried before a parent decides to spank a child. Telling the child exactly what is wanted from them can be one thing. Giving a child more than one choice is another thing that can be tried. Getting down to the child’s level and taking a more child-friendly approach (方法) can help as well. 66. According to the passage, when children do something wrong, one thing that parents usually do to punish them is to _______. A. strike them on the bottom B. try to help them do the right thing C. teach them what to do D. take them to court 67. What does the word “spank” mean? A. 打屁股 B.下跪 C. 罚站 D. 打手心 68. Which of the following is NOT the problem caused by spanking? A. It teaches the child to hit others when they offend him or her. B. The parent may get angry and hit the child too hard. C. Sometimes parents may use spanking for everything. D. It makes parents try other ways to make the child do right. 69. Which of the following can best describe the writer ’s attitude (态度) towards spanking? A. favorable (赞同的) B. indifferent (不关心)
C. interested D. unfavorable 70. From this passage, we can conclude (作出结论) that ________. A. good children always do the right thing B. parents should try their best to avoid (避免) spanking their children C. parents have no choice but to spank their children when they do something wrong D. children can have more than one choice to avoid being spanked
