Elias was not allowed to go on working in a gold mine without a passbook. He was worried about whether he would be out of work.

? The terrible situation for black people in South Africa :
Black people could not vote. They couldn’t get the jobs they wanted. They were sent to the poorest areas where no one could grow food.
