Other times they begin to act without 37 ; they try to find a solution by trial and error. However, when all of these methods 38 , the person with a problem has to start analyzing. There are six 39 in analyzing a problem. First the person must recognize that there is a problem. For example, Sam’s bicycle is broken, and he cannot ride it to class as he usually does. Sam must 40 that there is a problem with his bicycle. Next the person must 41 the problem. Before Sam can repair his bicycle, he must know why it does not work. For example, he must 42 the parts that are wrong. Now the person must look for 43 that will make the problem clearer and lead to 44 . solutions. For example, suppose Sam 45 that his bike does not work because there is something wrong with the brakes. At this time, he can look in his bicycle repair book and read about brakes, talk to his friends at the bike shop, or look at his brakes carefully. After 46 the problem, the person should have 47 suggestions for a possible solution. Take Sam as an example 48 , his suggestions might be: tighten or loosen the brakes, buy new brakes and change the old ones. In the end, one 49 seems to be the solution 50 the problem. Sometimes the 51 idea comes quite 52 because the thinker suddenly sees something new or sees something in a 53 way. Sam, for example, suddenly sees there is a piece of chewing gum stuck to a brake. He immediately hits on the solution to his problem: he must 54 the brake. Finally the solution is 55 . Sam does it and finds his bicycle works perfectly. In short, he has solved the problem.

A It was a Sunday and the heavy storm had lasted all night. The morning after the storm, though, was beautiful: blue skies, warm air and a calm, inviting sea touching the shore gently. My father realised it was a good day for fishing and invited my sister and me to go with him. I was only 14 and fishing had never been my thing, but I decided to go all the same. I' m so glad I did. On the way to the harbour we could see the terrible destruction on the coast, but the harbour itself was in fairly good shape. After all, it was protected by the arms of a bay that had only one tiny channel to the sea. As we got on board, we noticed two big humps (脊背) in the distance. On approaching them, we saw it was a mother whale with her baby. We couldn't believe it — there aren't any whales along the coast here. The storm must have driven them across the ocean into the bay, in which the still water was so badly polluted that nothing could survive. The little baby whale —actually as big as our boat — was obviously stuck and could not move. The mother dived under the water and came up suddenly, making big whirlpools (漩涡) and waves. "She's trying to help her baby, but on the wrong side," my father said. At this point, my father moved our boat in a semicircle to the other side and, heading the boat towards the baby whale, pushed it gently. With our several gentle pushes the big hump turned over and disappeared under water. Then it swam up right beside its mum. They struggled in their desperate attempts to escape but missed the exit and started heading in the wrong direction. We hurried up to the whales and tried to lead them towards the bay channel. Slowly, they let us lead them, sometimes rising from the water right beside us to breathe -- and to give us a trusting look with those huge eyes. Once they hit their first part of clean water flowing straight from the sea, the mum gave us a wave with her tail and off they swam into the distance. In the excitement it had felt like only a few minutes, but we had been with those wonderful animals for almost an hour and a half. That was the simple and lasting beauty of the day. Nearly four decades later, I still look back fondly to that golden day at sea. 56. The author says "I' m so glad I did." ( in Para. 2) because _________. A. he witnessed the whole process of fishing B. he enjoyed the beauty of the calm sea C. he experienced the rescue of the whales D. he spent the weekend with his family 57. The mother whale failed to help her baby because __________. A. she had stayed in the polluted water for too long B. the whirlpools she had made were not big enough C. she had no other whales around to turn to for help D. the waves pushed her baby in the wrong direction 58. What is the theme of the story? A. Saving lives brings people a sense of happiness. B. Fishing provides excitement for children. C. It's necessary to live in harmony with animals. D. It's vital to protect the whale in the ocean.

LEEDS, England ─ A Leeds University psychology (心理学) professor is teaching a course to help dozens of Britons forgive their enemies. “The hatred we hold within us is a cancer,” Professor Ken Hart said, adding that holding in anger can lead to problems such as high blood pressure and heart disease. More than 70 people have become members in Hart’s first 20-week workshop in London ─ a course he says is the first of its kind in the world. These are people who are sick and tired of living with a memory. They realize their bitterness is a poison they think they can pour out, but they end up drinking it themselves, said Canadian-born Hart. The students meet in groups of eight to ten for a two-hour workshop with an adviser every fortnight. The course, ending in July, is expected to get rid of the cancer of hatred in these people. “People have lots of negative attitudes towards forgiveness,” he said, “People confuse forgiveness with forgetting. Forgiveness means changing from a negative attitude to a positive one.” Hart and his team have created instructions to provide the training needed. “The main idea is to give you guidelines on how to look at various kinds of angers and how they affect you, and how to change your attitudes towards the person you are angry with,” said Norman Claringbull, a senior expert on the forgiveness project. Hart said he believes forgiveness is a skill that can be taught, as these people “want to get free of the past”. 59. From this passage we know that _________. To err is human. To blame the other guy is even more human. Common sense is not all that common. Why tell the truth when you can come up with a good excuse?
These three popular misquotes (戏谑的引语) are meant to be jokes, and yet they tell us a lot about human nature. To err, or to make mistakes, is indeed a part of being human, but it seems that most people don’t want to accept the responsibility for the problem. Perhaps it is the natural thing to do. The original quote about human nature went like this, “ To err is human, to forgive, divine(神圣的).” This saying mirrors an ideal: people should be forgiving of others’ mistakes. Instead, we tend to do the opposite --- find someone else to pass the blame on to. However, taking responsibility for something that went wrong is a

making of great maturity. Common sense is what we call clear thought. Having common sense means having a good general plan that will make things work well, and it also means staying with the plan. Common sense tells you that you take an umbrella out into a rainstorm, but you leave the umbrella home when you hear a weather forecast for sunshine. Common sense does not seem to be common for large organizations, because there are so many things going on that one person cannot be in charge of everything. People say that in a large company, “the right hand does not know what the left hand is doing.” And what is wrong with a society that thinks that making up a good excuse is like creating a work of art? One of the common problems with making excuses is that people, especially young people, get the idea that it’s okay not to be totally honest all the time. There is a corollary(直接推论)to that: if good excuse is “good” even if it isn’t honest, then where is the place of the truth? 67.According to the author, what is a sign of a man’s maturity? A. Doing things his own way. B. Bearing responsibility for his mistakes. C. Making as few mistakes as possible. D. Thinking seriously about his wrongdoing. 68.Which of the following is N0T based on common sense? A.A man tries to take charge of everything in a large company. B.A student goes out with an umbrella in stormy weather. C.A company’s next move follows a good plan. D.A lawyer acts on fine judgments. 69. What is the author’s opinion about a good excuse? A. Making a good excuse is sometimes a better policy. B. Inventing a good excuse needs creative ideas. C. A good excuse is as rewarding as honesty. D. Bitter truth is better than a good excuse. 70. What would be the best title for his passage? A. A Mirror of Human Nature B. To Blame or to Forgive C. A Mark of Maturity D. 第五部分 One possible version: As middle school students, we have all taken examinations of different types and experienced success as well as failure. Different students have different attitudes towards failure in the exams. Some of us become low in spirits in face of failure, while others are so disappointed that they don’t want to make further efforts in their studies. As a result, their studies go from bad to worse as time goes on. Fortunately, some students take quite positive attitudes towards their setbacks. They spare no efforts in analyzing the cause of their failure and at the same time encourage themselves to become more confident so that they won’t repeat their mistakes in their later examinations. As far as I’m concerned, I believe that failure is the mother of success. So long as we can find out the root cause of our failure and step up our efforts to improve our ways of learning, we can surely make great progress and turn our dream into reality. If we buy a smaller one, we might have to change it in a few years’ time for a bigger one. That would be a waste of money. What is your opinion? W: In my opinion, I don’t think it’s necessary to buy a very big one. M: Any reason? W: Yes. As I know, your sitting room isn’t big enough. W: You’d better make a quick decision because the price may go up soon. (Text 8) M: Excuse me. Here are the books I want to borrow and here’s my card.

W: You’ve got three books on your card already. M: Yes. And I can borrow 7 altogether, isn’t it? I’ve four here. W: Yes, you can have four. But I’m afraid you can’t take these three out. M: Can teachers borrow them? I can ask my teacher to borrow them for me. W: I’m afraid not. They are single copies, so we are not lending them to anyone. You can read them here in the library. M: I see. I’ll take the one I can borrow then, and when I’m free, I’ll read the three here. W: OK.

(Text 9) M:Good morning. Can you tell me the times of morning flights to Paris, please? W:Yes, certainly. There are daily flights at 7:50 and 11:05. M:And when do they arrive in Paris? W:The early flight arrives at 9:00 and the mid-morning one at 12:15. M:So the journey takes an hour and ten minutes? W:Yes, that’s correct. But remember, you must be at the airport one hour before. M:Of course. And in Paris, is there a bus to the city centre? W:Yes, there are buses every half an hour and the journey takes about 40 minutes. M:Fine. How much is a single air ticker? W:Single…$ 59. M:Right. I’d like to book five tickets, please, on the early morning flight to Paris on June 10. W: OK, fine. (Text 10) Newspapers in Great Britain vary greatly in their ways of carrying the news. There are serious papers for those who want to know about important happenings everywhere, both at home and abroad. There are popular newspapers for those who prefer entertainment to information. The London newspaper that is best known outside Great Britain is probably The Times. It began in 1785, and has a high reputation for believable news and serious opinions on the news. It calls itself an independent paper, which means that it does not give its support to a particular political party. Its leading articles give the opinions of the editors, not those of the owners of the paper.

Letters to the editor are printed in the newspaper. These parts of the Times are always interesting. Most of the letters are on serious subjects. But from time to time there will be long letters on the subject which is not at all serious, perhaps on a new fashion of dress, or the bad manners of the young people, compared with manners of thirty years ago.
