双流中学 2010 级高三 12 月月考- 2 -
Children start out as natural scientists, eager to look into the world around them. Helping them enjoy science can be easy; there's no need for a lot of scientific terms or expensive lab equipment. You only have to share your children's curiosity. Firstly, listen to their questions. I once visited a classroom of seven-year-olds to talk about science as a job. The children asked me "textbook questions" about schooling, salary and whether I liked my job. When I finished answering, we sat facing one another in silence. Finally I said, "Now that we're finished with your lists, do you have questions of your own about science?" After a long pause, a boy raised his hand, "Have you ever seen a grasshopper eat? When I try eating leaves like that, I get a stomachache. Why?"This began a set of questions that lasted nearly two hours. Secondly, give them time to think. Studies over the past 30 years have shown that, after asking a question, adults typically wait only one second or less for an answer, no time for a child to think. When adults increase their "wait time" to three seconds or more, children give more logical, complete and creative answers. Thirdly, watch your language. Once you have a child involved in a science discussion, don't jump in with "That's right" or "Very good". These words work well when it comes to encouraging good behavior. But in talking about science, quick praise can signal that discussion is over. Instead, keep things going by saying "That's interesting" or "I'd never thought of it that way before", or coming up with more questions or ideas. Lastly, show; don't tell. Real-life impressions of nature are far more impressive than any lesson children can learn from a book or a television program. Let children look at their fingertips through a magnifying glass（放大镜）, and they'll understand why you want them to wash before dinner. Rather than saying that water evaporates, set a pot of water to boil and let them watch the water level drop. 31. To raise the interest of the children, the most important thing for adults to do is ___. A. to share the children's curiosity B. to let them see the world around C. to explain difficult phrases about science D. to supply the children with lab equipment 32.The underline word in the first paragraph "lists" could best be replaced by____. A. plans B. ideas C. questions from textbooks D. a large number of difficulties 33.According to the passage, children can answer questions in a more logical, complete and creative way if adults ________. A. ask them to answer quickly B. encourage them to take questions seriously C. tell them to answer the next day D. wait at least for three seconds after a question 34.What should adults do to encourage children in a science discussion? A. Perform good behaviour B. Ask more questions C. Make the discussion interesting D. Give a quick praise

Some people around the world are genuinely predicting that the year 2012, all life on Earth could well finish. Some are saying it’ll be humans that set it off. Others believe that a natural phenomenon will be the cause. And the religious folks are saying it’ll be God himself who presses the stop button...
双流中学 2010 级高三 12 月月考- 4 -
Several reasons are going about why the world will end in 2012 and netizens（网民） have started a discussion in the forum(论坛）. 1．Mayan Calendar The first mob to predict 2012 as the end of the world were the Mayans, a bloodthirsty race that were good at two things: Building highly accurate astrological（占星术的）equipment out of stone and sacrificing virgins. Thousands of years ago they managed to calculate the length of the lunar moon as 329.53020 days, only 34 seconds out. The Mayan calendar predicts that the Earth will end on December 21, 2012. Given that they were pretty close to the mark with the lunar cycle, it’s likely they’ve got the end of the world right as well. 2. The Atom Smasher Scientists in Europe have been building the world’s largest particle accelerator (粒子加速器). Basically it’s a 27km tunnel designed to break atoms together to find out what makes the Universe tick. However, the device has caused serious concern, with some scientists suggesting that it’s properly even a bad idea to turn it on in the first place. They’re predicting all manner of deadly results, including mini black holes. So when this machine is fired up for its first serious experiment in 2012, the world could be squeezed into a super-dense drop ,the size of a basketball. 3. The Bible says… If having scientists warning us about the end of the world isn’t bad enough, religious folks are getting in on the act as well. Interpretations of the Christian Bible reveal that the date for Armageddon, the final battle between Good and Evil, has been set down for 2012. The I Ching, also known as the Chinese book of Changes, says the same thing, as do various sections of the Hindu teachings. 4. Slip-Slop-Slap-BANG! We all know the Earth is surrounded by a magnetic（磁的）field that shields us from most of the sun’s radiation. What you might not know is that the magnetic poles we call north and south have a bad habit of swapping places every 750,000 years or so – and right now we’re about 30,000 years overdue. Scientists have noted that the poles are drifting apart roughly 20-30kms each year, much faster than ever before, which points to a pole-shift being right around the corner. While the pole shift is underway, the magnetic field is disrupted and will eventually disappear, sometimes for ups to 100 years. The result is enough UV（紫外线的）outdoors to crisp your skin in seconds, killing everything it touches. 39.Some people are convinced of Mayans’ prediction about the end of the probably because ______. A. they had stone astrological equipment B. they calculated the lunar cycle highly accurately C. they could get close to the lunar moon D. they were the first group to predict things. 40. What does the writer mean by ―religious folks are getting in on the act as well‖? A. Religions also have predictions about the end of the world. B. Religious people are taking action to solve the problem. C. Religions come up with different views from the scientists. D. Scientists do their research among the religious people. 41. What can be inferred from the text? A. All life on earth would finish in 2012 .

B. Some scientific experiments might cause the finish of the world in 2012. C. The war between God and human might happen in 2012 . D. The earth will be surrounded by a magnetic field forever. 42. What would the passage probably be if it’s to be continued? A. Worst effects. B. Possible solutions. C. Humans’ measures. D. Netizens’ discussion.
I used to believe in the American dream that meant a job, credit, success．I wanted it and worked toward it like everyone else, all of us separately chasing the same thing． One year, through a series of unhappy events, it all fell apart．I found myself homeless and alone． had my truck and $56． searched the countryside for some place I could rent for the cheapest I I possible amount．I came upon a deserted cottage in a small remote valley．I hadn't been alone for 25 years．I was scared, but I hoped the hard work would distract and heal me． I found the owner and rented the place for $50 a month．The locals knew nothing about me． But slowly they started teaching me the art of being a neighbor．They dropped off blankets, tools and canned deer meat and began sticking around to chat． They would ask if I wanted to meet cousin Albie or go fishing．They started to teach me a belief in a different American dream, not the one of individual achievement but of neighborliness．Men would stop by with wild berries, ice cream, truck parts to see if I needed some．The women on that mountain worked harder than any I'd ever met．They taught me how to store food in the stream and keep it cold and safe．I learned to keep enough for an extra plate for company． What I had believed in, all those things I thought were necessary for a civilized life, were non-existent in this place．Up on the mountain, my most valuable possessions were my relationships with my neighbors． After four years in that valley, I moved back into town．I saw a lot of people were having a really hard time, losing their jobs and homes．With the help of a real estate broker （房地产经纪人） I chatted up at the grocery store, I managed to rent a big enough house to take in a handful of people．It's four of us now, but over time I've had nine come in and move on to other places from here．We'd all be in shelters if we hadn't banded together． The American dream I believe in now is a shared one．It's not so much about what I can get for myself; it's about how we can all get by together． 43. Before a series of unhappy events happened, the writer ____. A. had a well-paid job B. felt hopeless about his American dream C. worked hard and liked to share D. worked hard for his American dream 44. Younger people are twice as likely to miss work through illness as their older colleagues, according to a new survey. Under-30s are more likely to stay at home while suffering from colds and flu, allergies and intolerances than over-55s, figures showed.Younger people were also more likely to take time off work due to stress, tiredness and feeling run down, which the older contingent said would not be a reason to call in sick.Almost one in five people aged 18 to 29 admitted they had missed work because they were "too hung-over", but 85 per cent of over-55s said they would only miss work if they were bedridden. The higher rates of illness in younger people could be explained by the impact of unhealthy lifestyles, the survey of 3,000 people suggested.Men and women aged 30 and under were more likely to eat junk food like ready meals and takeaways than older people, and were half as likely to eat the five daily portions of fruit and vegetables that experts recommend. Older people also showed a more positive outlook towards their wellbeing, with 59 per cent believing they are healthier than their parents compared with just 37 per cent of the younger group. A number of under-30s reported that they often fall ill as a result of stress, with work-related pressures, money issues and relationship problems among the most common causes. In contrast, fewer than a quarter of over-55s who replied to the survey said they often felt unwell due to stress at work. High levels of stress could cause symptoms including irritability, headaches, tiredness and upset stomachs, respondents said.Peter Morton, the marketing manager of multivitamin manufacturer Multibionta, which commissioned the survey, said: ―Today’s fast paced, work-hard play-hard lifestyle appears to be taking its toll on the younger generation.A poor immune system caused by smoking, drinking and a lack of nutritionally beneficial food, lends itself to people being more susceptible to coughs and colds which in turn can lead to sick days.‖ 47. From paragraph 2,we know the older people’s attitude to taking time off work because of stress is ______. A. doubtful B. positive C. disapproving D. understanding 48. What’s the meaning of the underlined phrase? A. be causing a great loss to B. be unpopular with C. be playing a positive part in D. have a good effect on 49. What’s the main idea of this passage ? A. To explain why young people fall ill more easily B. To analyze reasons why young people ask for leave C. To describe why older people are healthy D. To show us different pressures younger people are suffering from 50.
Everyone wants something in life, love, money, success...Yet too many people fail to achieve their goals, and nearly all of them are for the same reason. It's true that terrible things do happen to people during their lives, though no fault of their own, which may make them feel upset. Generally speaking, however, getting what you really want out of life is just a matter of the following three simple steps. Firstly, you have to decide what it is you want the most. But do not make a list of wishes; try to focus on o ne thing at a time. If you're not sure about where you want to go, you'd better think it over first and not hurry to perform. Secondly, create an action plan. This will be your map for getting from "_________________" to "where you want to go". You know what you want, and what steps you are going to take to get it. For example, if you want a better job, start with a skills assessment and maybe some extra training. Then you'll need to sell yourself and your skills either to your present employer or to a new employer. Other goals will require a bit more thought. Some will really get you lost without a clue of how to get there. Not to worry, though, books, biographies and such, can be of great help. The third and final step is to execute. Do what you planned. Take the steps you outlined on your road map and keep going on all the time. If you run into some people who are against you, simply ignore them. Never give up the goal. Keep pushing. Whatever you do, do not lose heart until you have what you desire in your hands. Never think that you can't turn your dream into a reality.

Conflicts with others are common in everyday life. During the basketball game yesterday afternoon, Li Ming and Wang lin bumped into each other, trying to catch the ball. Then they started shouting and yelling, and it turned into a horrible quarrel. To be honest, it was Li Ming’s fault but Wang was also to blame—they were not calm enough and both said some really mean things. They cared too much about winning and losing. （As a matter of fact, blocking, pushing and bumping are just part of a tough game.） To avoid such conflicts, we should be kind to one another, which is essential to enjoying a harmonious life. (It is also a virtue to forgive and forget, especially in such a competitive and stressful society. )Instead of blaming each other, we should communicate more and put ourselves in others’ place. Don’t be self-centered and try to be considerate. We must learn to handle conflicts calmly and wisely.
