关于 task-based teaching


Task-based syllabus first appeared in the West world and it developed fast there. We would like to talk about 3 foreign linguists and their main ideas especially from the aspect of definition of task, because there are many different sayings about task besides Jane Willis and the task is the soul of Task-based teaching. Then we can get conclusion from those experts`opinions,and draw our own understanding. The first is Long(1985),who thought that a task is a piece of work undertaken for oneself or for others, freely or for some reward. (1)We can see that it was meant what people do in everyday life, at work, at play, and in between. A task is an activity with its aim. So people accomplishes his goal when he finishes the task. Next is David Nunan(1989), who also had his own explanations about task-based syllabus. He thought a task is a piece of classroom work which involves learners in comprehending,manipulation, production or interacting in the target language while their attention is principally focused on meaning rather than on form.(2) He mean that TBLT is a process-oriented approach. This is the contrary of product-oriented approach. Nunan focused more on how students learn what they learn. The last one , Prabhu(1987), defined a task as an activity which required

learners to arrive at an outcome from given information through some process of thought and which allowed teachers to control and regulate that process. 3) He thought ( that students are provided with some information and required to perform this information in order to get some results.
From their opinions we can see many same ideas :they thought that task have close connection with information and it combines the teaching contents with students. The task-based syllabus must have its own final gaol and people will pay lots of efforts before reaching the objects. The process may cost some time, but the result will always be consistent with our expectation. So that they all thought this work must contain information, executor, and a result. We also agree with this task-based syllabus, because it can draw students` attention and it is easy for teachers to control the class, also it can promise to keep a 100 percent efficiency in class. It has already spread in China and used in class, then the students find it is interesting and can learn more than the traditional teaching methods.
