高三上学期第二次月考英语试卷(文科)
命题人:史彩云 王东平 审题人:白丽娟 第一部分:.阅读理解(共两节,满分 40 分) 第一节: (共 15 小题,每小题 2 分,满分 30 分) A Phil White has just returned from an 18,000-mile, around-the-world bicycle trip. White had

two reasons for making this epic journey. First of all, he wanted to use the trip to raise money for charity, which he did. He raised £ 70,000 for the British charity, Oxfam. White's second reason for making the trip was to break the world record and become the fastest person to cycle around the world. He is still waiting to find out if he has broken the record or not. White set off from Trafalgar Square, in London, on 19th June 2004 and was back 299 days later. He spent more than l,300 hours in the saddle(车座)and destroyed four sets of tyres and three bike chains. He had the adventure of his life crossing Europe, the Middle East, India, Asia, Australia, New Zealand and the Americas. Amazingly, he did all of this with absolutely no support team. No jeep carrying food, water and medicine. No doctor. Nothing! Just a bike and a very, very long road. The journey was lonely and desperate at times. He also had to fight his way across deserts, through jungles and over mountains. He cycled through heavy rains and temperatures of up to 45 degrees, all to help people in need. There were other dangers along the road. In Iran, he was chased by armed robbers and was lucky to escape with his life and the little money he had. The worst thing that happened to him was having to cycle into a headwind on a road that crosses the south of Australia. For 1,000 kilometers he battled against the wind that was constantly pushing him. This part of the trip was slow, hard work and depressing, but he made it in the end. Now Mr. White is back and intends to write a book about his adventures. 21. When Phil White returned from his trip, he________. A. broke the world record B. collected money for Oxfam C. destroyed several bikes D. travelled about 1,300 hours 22. What does the word "epic" in Paragraph l most probably mean A. Very slow but exciting. B. Very long and difficult. C. Very smooth but tiring. D. Very lonely and depressing. 23. During his journey around the world, Phil White _______. A. fought heroically against robbers in Iran B. experienced the extremes of heat and cold C. managed to ride against the wind in Australia D. had a team of people who travelled with him 24. Which of the following words can best describe Phil White? A. Imaginative. B. Patriotic. C. Modest. D. Determined. B Children have their own rules in playing games. They seldom need a referee (裁判) and rarely trouble to keep scores. They don’t care much about who wins or loses, and it doesn’t seem to worry them if the game is not finished. Yet, they like games that depend a lot on luck, so that their personal abilities cannot be directly compare. They also enjoyed games that move in stages, in which each stage, the choosing of leaders,

the picking-up of sides, or the determining of which side shall start, is almost a game in itself. Grown-ups can hardly find children’s game exciting, and they often feel puzzled at why their kids play such simple game again and again. However, it is found that a child plays games for very important reasons. He can be a good player without having to think whether he is a popular person, and he can find himself being a useful partner to someone of whom he is ordinary afraid. He becomes a leader when it comes to his turn. He can be confident, too, in particular games, that it is his place to give orders, to pretend to be dead, to throw a ball actually at someone, or to kiss someone he has caught. It appears to us that when children play a game they imagine a situation under their control. Everyone knows the rules, and more importantly, everyone plays according to the rules. Those rules may be childish, but they make sure that every child has a chance to win. 25.What is true about children when they play games? A. They can stop playing any time they like. B. They can test their personal abilities. C. They want to pick a better team. D. They don’t need rules. 26.To become a leader in a game the child has to _________. A. be a useful partner B. wait for his turn C. be confident in himself D. be popular among his playmates 27.Why does a child like playing games? A. Because he can be someone other than himself. B. Because he can become popular among friends. C. Because he finds he is always lucky in games. D. Because he likes the place where he plays a game. 28.Which is the best title for this passage? A. Rules in Children’s Games B. Advantages of Playing Games for Children C. Reasons for Children’s Games D. How to Be a Popular Game Player C Since the first Earth Day in 1970, Americans have gotten a lot “greener” toward the environment ( 环 境 ) . “We didn’t know at that time there even was an environment, let alone that there was a problem with it,” says Bruce Anderson, president of Earth Day USA. But what began as nothing important in public affairs has grown into a social movement. Business people, political leaders, university professors, and especially millions of grass-roots Americans are taking part in the movement. “The understanding has increased many, many times,” says Gaylord Nelson, the former governor from Wisconsin, who thought up the first Earth Day. According to US government reports, emissions (排放) from cars and trucks have dropped from 10.3 million tons a year to 5.5 tons .The number of cities producing CO beyond the standard has been reduced from 40 to 9 .Although serious problems still remain and need to be dealt with , the world is a safer and healthier place .A kind of “Green thinking ” has become part of practices . Great improvement has been achieved .In 1988 there were only 600 recycling(回 收利用)programs; today in 1995 there are about 6,600 . Advanced lights, motors,

and building designs have helped save a lot of energy and therefore prevented pollution . Twenty –five years ago , there were hardly any education programs for environment .Today , it’s hard to find a public school , university , or law school that does not have such a kind of program .“Until we do that, nothing else will change! ” says Bruce Anderson. 29According to Anderson, before 1970, Americans had little idea about ___ A. the social movement B. recycling techniques C. environmental problems D. the importance of Earth Day 30 Where does the support for environmental protection mainly come from? A. The grass –roots level B. The business circle C. Government officials D. University professors 31. What have Americans achieved in environmental protection? A. They have cut car emissions to the lowest B. They have settled their environmental problems C. They have lowered their CO levels in forty cities. D. They have reduced pollution through effective measures. 32. What is especially important for environmental protection according to the last paragraph? A. Education B. Planning C. Green living D. CO reduction D One of the latest trends(趋势) in American Childcare is Chinese au pairs. Au Pair in Stamford, Conn, for example, has got increasing numbers of request for Chinese au pairs from zero to around 4, 000 since 2004. And that’s true all across the country. “I thought it would be useful for him to learn Chinese at an early age” Joseph Stocke, the managing director of a company, says of his 2-year old son. “I would at least like to give him the chance to use the language in the future, ” After only six months of being cared by 25-year-old woman from China, the boy can already understand basic Chinese daily expressions, his dad says. Li Drake, a Chinese native raising two children in Minnesota with an American husband, had another reason for looking for an au pair from China: She didn’t want her children to miss out on their roots. “Because I am Chinese, my husband and I wanted the children to keep exposed to(接触) the language and culture. ” she says. “Staying with a native speaker is better for children than simply sitting in a classroom, ” says Suzanne Flynn, a professor in language education of Children. “But parents must understand that just one year with au pair is unlikely to produce wonders. Complete mastery(掌握) demands continued learning until the age of 10 or 12. ” The popularity if au pairs from china has been strengthened by the increasing numbers of American parents who want their children to learn Chinese. It is expected that American demand for au pairs will continue to rise in the next few years. 33. What does the term“au pair” in the text mean? A A mother raising her children on her own B. A child learning a foreign language at home C. A professor in language education of children D. A young foreign woman taking care of children. 34. Li Drake has her children study Chinese because she wants them _____. A. to live in China some day B. to speak the language at home

Every waking moment, the eyes are working to see the world around us. Over forty percent of Americans worry about losing eyesight, but it’s easy to include steps into our daily life to ensure healthy eyes. Here are five suggestions for a lifetime of healthy eyesight: ? Schedule yearly exams. 36 Experts advise parents to bring babies 6 to 12 months of age to the doctor for a careful check. The good news is that millions of children now can have yearly eye exams and following treatment, including eyeglasses. ? Protect against UV rays(紫外线). Long-term stay in the sun creates risk to your eyes. No matter what the season is, it’s extremely important to wear sunglasses. 37 ? Give your eyes a break. Two-thirds of Americans spend up to seven hours a day using computers or other digital products. 38 Experts recommend that people practice the 20/20/20 rule: every 20 minutes, take a 20-second break and look at something 20 feet away. ? 39 As part of a healthy diet, eat more fruits and vegetables each day. Vitamins(维 生素) C and E help protect eyesight and promote eye health. ? Practice safe wear and care of contact lenses(隐形眼镜). Many Americans use contact lenses to improve their eyesight. While some follow the medical guidance for wearing contact lenses, many are breaking the rules and putting their eyesight at risk. 40 Otherwise, you may have problems such as red eyes, pain in the eyes, or a more serious condition.
