第三部分:阅读理解(共 15 小题;每小题 2 分,满分 30 分)

请认真阅读下列短文,从短文后各题所给的 A、B、C、D 四个选项中,选出最佳选项,并在答题纸上 将该项涂黑。 A Luke has always been my closest and constant companion these past five years. In fact, he is very obedient (顺从的) to me especially when I take care of other furry friends in our shelter. As you already know, there have been a lot of forest fires during the summer season. Many forests are badly damaged by fire each year. Not far from our shelter, a forest caught fire during this hot summer. We are in July, a heat wave which has been going on for three days. Luke rushed towards the forest where flames send out an infernal heat. There?s no longer any hope at the moment to wait for Luke to come back to the shelter. In fact, I was waiting for the fire brigade to announce me his death in the forest. Suddenly, a fireman burst into my office and informed me that my dog Luke succeeded in saving four kittens who were trapped by the flames. According to the fireman, Luke seized the kittens, one by one moving them to a safe place. I immediately accompanied the fireman to the forest to pick up the rescued kittens. Once on the scene of the incident, Luke was not there. Then we heard the sound of a dog coming from the forest barking furiously. I recognized the sound of my dog Luke. The firemen followed the tracks of the dog until they found him barking loudly by the side of an injured fireman who was lying on the ground and desperately waiting for rescue. Thanks to Luke, four kittens and a fireman were saved. That day, I was very proud of Luke for his two heroic actions. Luke showed much compassion (同情,怜悯) for both animals like him and for a human being who was trying to put out the fire with his colleagues. Truth to tell, my happiness is great and immeasurable. I paid a visit to the fireman in his house accompanied with my adorable Luke. What a memorable scene when the fireman hugged Luke tightly to his chest! “One thousand thanks, Luke, for saving my life,” the fireman said. This true story of love and compassion shows us that pets are loving, caring and compassionate. We should love and protect them. Don?t belittle them. Little animals can make enormous things for humans. 61. We can learn from the passage that ________. A. Luke put out the forest fire B. this story happened in July C. the four kittens rescued the fireman D. there have been a lot of forest fires during every season 62. The underlined word in the third paragraph “infernal” probably means ________. A. fierce B. weak C. cruel D. limited 63. Which of the following can best describe the dog in the whole course of the accident? A. Obedient, courageous and generous. C. Courageous, sympathetic and caring. . 64. What does the writer mainly want to tell us? A. He is so proud of the dog that he will never look down upon it. B. Pets are humans? companions and worthy of our love and respect. C. Reports that apes (类人猿) have a born linguistic ability and can be taught to communicate with humans have been questioned by several authorities on primates (灵长类). The reports say that chimpanzees (黑猩猩) and other apes at Georgia State University?s Language Research Center (LRC), using a computer system attached to a voice machine, have learnt enough words to make simple sentences. The computer is flat with hundreds of touch-sensitive squares, each having a symbol related to a word in the animal?s vocabulary. Touching the square makes the machine produce the appropriate word. One chimpanzee, Kanzi, can use the system to say, “I want a cup of coffee, please.” Another, Panbanisha, is said to know around 3,000 words. But Dr Tom Sambrook, of the Scottish Primate Research Group, told BBC television of his doubts that the apes? achievements meant all they appeared to. “They can use language effectively to make requests”, he said. “But whether they?re understanding what they?re doing is a much more difficult mystery to solve.” Dr Sambrook was asked whether the LRC?s work did not at least show that humans and great apes were closer than many people believed. “I personally have no problem with being as close as possible to the chimpanzees.” “But if you look at their production of language, you?ll find it?s hugely different from the manner in which, for example, a child uses language.” Dr Sambrook quoted an earlier researcher?s words: “Were a four-year-old child to use language in the way a chimpanzee uses it, we would consider that child disturbed.” Jim Cronin is director of the Monkeyworld ape rescue centre in Dorset. He believes that primates do have a rudimentary (未成熟的) language ability, but is concerned the research at LRC does not offer much to the animals themselves. Mr Cronin, speaking on BBC Radio Five Live, said,“ What do the chimpanzees ever get out of all this?” “I look at all this research, and everybody says: ?Should the chimps have human rights?? ” “They don?t have any rights here at all. I would get a 400-pound chimp—three times overweight—who has been isolated (被隔离的), and wonder ?Is that cruel??” “I hear about a chimp who has been raised since 1972 on his own, in isolation, because it would seem that isolation is the key to being taught this.” “And I wonder who is cruel here.” 65. What can we know from the second paragraph that chimpanzees at LRC ________. A. shouldn?t have human rights C. like drinking tea B. can speak the English language D. have learnt simple sentences

66. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage? A. Chimpanzees are as clever as a four-year-old child. B. Young children have the same rights with chimpanzees. C. Chimpanzees use language differently from humans do. D. The LRC?s work showed that chimpanzees understood what they were doing. 67. What does Jim Cronin suggest in the passage? A. Chimpanzees have no language ability. B. People should raise chimpanzees at home. C. Chimpanzees in research should get much more. D. people should agree with what scientists at LRC did to the chimpanzees. C

Choose a word to describe the past winter. Chances are many of us will either pick “smoggy” or “PM 2.5”. Much of central and eastern China, blanketing more than 1.4 million square kilometers, was covered in smog. PM2.5 refers to small particles (颗粒) of pollution in the air with a diameter of 2.5 micrometers or less. It is a major part of the heavy fog. The biggest cause of it is human activity, especially motor vehicle emissions and the burning of coal. Although PM2.5 particles are too small to be seen, they can be harmful to people?s health, as they can go deep into the lungs and even enter the bloodstream. They can lead to heart, brain and respiratory (呼吸的) diseases and an increased risk of cancer. To warn the public of the pollution, the Ministry of Environmental Protection has started to monitor he level of PM2.5 in 74 major cities including Beijing and Shanghai, since Jan 1, 2013. The public can now find real-time PM2.5 data online called CN Air Quality. The safety level set by the World Health Organization is 25 (daily average). Any reading above 100 is considered to be unhealthy for people with breathing or heart problems. Readings above 400 are dangerous for everyone. Although you might think all PM2.5 particles are harmful, Fan Shaojia, a professor of environmental studies at Sun Yat-sen University, says some of them can be reused at a certain stage. “The PM2.5 particles appearing during the production process of steel can be collected and recycled,” he told Nanfang Daily. But he further pointed out that “once they spread out into the environment, we can do very little to help”. The solution to the PM2.5 pollution is to change China?s highly polluting and energy-using economic growth model, Fan said. The government will increase the reuse of energy, cut carbon dioxide emissions and make stricter laws to control pollution, Premier Wen Jiabao said in his Government Work Report at the NPC on March 5. “We should give people hope through our action,” he added. Health tips for smoggy days ●Avoid going outside. ●Wear a proper mask. A N95 mask is a good choice. It can filter 95 percent of particulate (颗粒的) matter as small as PM0.3, much smaller than PM2.5.. ●Don?t rush to buy air purifiers (净化器) to clean the air. Whether they can filter PM2.5 or not remains uncertain, because China hasn?t yet developed any methods to measure their effectiveness. 68. According to the passage, the following statements are true EXCEPT that ________. A. the government has made the strictest laws in the world to control the PM2.5 emissions B. PM2.5 refers to small particles of pollution in the air with a diameter of 2.5 micrometers or less C. human activity, especially motor vehicle emissions and the burning of coal, is the biggest causes of PM2.5. D. to reduce PM2.5 pollution, we should change the highly polluting and energy-using economic growth model 69. We can learn from the passage that PM2.5 particles ________. A. only cause stroke (中风) B. are small but they can be seen C. are all harmful before they spread out into the environment D. can enter the bloodstream and even increase the risk of cancer

70. The underlined word “filter” (in the form above) probably means ________. A. remove B. change C. leave D. burn B. Measures taken to prevent PM2.5 D. Fight against PM2.5 D Withdrawing money from the bank used to be so convenient. You could visit a money machine almost anywhere. Without paying a cent, you could get enough cash. But a couple of years ago some banks started charging a fee. If you didn?t have an account with them, you had to pay at least a dollar to withdraw money at their ATM. Other banks followed suit and now the majority charge a fee. Some even charge as much as $3! For many people who withdraw (取款) money from ATMs daily, that?s more than many would actually save in a year. That?s a steep fee, especially when you?re trying to withdraw $5. To their credit, banks have tried to make ATMs much safer for us. They?ve installed bright lights and security cameras. They don?t want anyone else robbing us. Some lawmakers are trying to put a limit on the surcharges (增收费). They don?t want the ATMs to display this message: “Please withdraw only half as much as you can afford, because we?re taking the other half.” Banks say they have to charge a fee because ATMs are expensive. They cost as much as $80,000 and that doesn?t even include the money inside. It would be cheaper to put a human in a box. But there?s probably a law against that. And humans, unlike machines, will make mistakes. They will run off to Mexico with the money. The surcharge also allows banks to install ATMs in many convenient places. However, when they are busy making ATMs more convenient, banks have made them less convenient for people like me. I?d rather have one free ATM in my neighborhood than a dozen that want to swindle (诈骗) me. A couple of dollars may not seem like much to a banker, but to me, it means a feast at Taco Bell. Besides, it?s against my principles to pay a bank to give me MY money. I just won?t do it, unless I?m stuck somewhere with no money and no Visa. What annoys many people, including me, is that we got used to free ATMs over many years. Banks got us hooked to them and then decided to reel in (卷,绕) our money. For some reason, in the 1970s and 80s, bankers didn?t complain much about the cost of installing ATMs. When the first ATM appeared, a banker said, “Here?s a revolutionary machine that dispenses cash without requiring minimum wage. It has no bad habits like smoking, swearing, or asking for raises. It cannot be threatened with a gun. One day, this machine will be able to greet people through the video display, process their transactions (交易) quickly and take them to the cleaners. ” 72. We can infer from the underlined sentence that the author thinks the charge on ATM withdrawal is _________. A. reasonable B. very small C. unusually high D. sudden 73. Which of the following statements is NOT true according to the passage? A. People used to withdraw money from ATMs for free. B. Some lawmakers are making efforts to limit the surcharges on ATM users. C. Bankers complained a lot about the cost of installing ATMs in the 1970s and 80s. D. Banks make ATMs safer for people by installing bright lights and security cameras.

How to be a modern day lady The word “lady” always makes people remember the images of women in the Victorian era (时代) of British history or Jane Austen novels. But do we have to go back to dressing in that style to be a lady? What does being a lady actually mean in the 21st century? British etiquette (礼节) tutor William Hanson told The Telegraph that being a lady today is all about elegance and confidence. “The behavior doesn?t need to be something straight out of a Jane Austen novel,” he said. But that doesn?t mean there are no specific rules to being a modern day lady. According to Hanson and other experts on etiquette, a real lady must tick all the following boxes of style and manner. Education Being educated was one of the essential qualities of a lady in the time of Jane Austen, when the middle class was commonly educated at home. In Pride & Prejudice, Caroline Bingley says,“A woman must know music, singing, drawing, dancing and the modern languages thoroughly to deserve the word ?lady?. Mr. Darcy adds that an accomplished lady must also improve her mind through reading more books. This educational requirement hasn?t been compromised much. A lady by today?s standards must educate herself in every possible way, from higher education to common sense manners, according to Candice Simpson, author of How to Be a Lady: A Contemporary Guide to Common Courtesy. Dress code One of the biggest misconceptions of a lady is that she can?t be fashionable, pointed out Eunice J Leong of elegantwoman.org. As a modern example of a lady, Duchess of Cambridge Kate Middleton has proved that it?s possible to be elegant and fashionable at the same time. But elegant fashion is usually understated and simple― ostentatious designer logos should be avoided. In addition, according to Hanson, a lady always lets her natural beauty shine. Hanson even prescribes strict skirt lengths. He believes a lady should never wear any garment that rises too far above the knee. Based on this rule, Lady Gaga, one of the most famous ladies of our times, should be simply Gaga. Art of words A lady should avoid gossiping (传播流言蜚语) quietly about friends or relatives, said Hanson. It leaves a

bad impression on others, even if they are joining in. If you freely gossip about someone, others will begin to wonder if you gossip about them to others. Further tips for being a lady, as offered by Hanson, include: Don?t swear. Don?t be rude to others. Don?t overshare or talk about your private life loudly in public. Chinese parents try their best to meet the needs of their children, no matter what they say. What?s worse, they never ask their children to do any housework even if they themselves are very tired after work. If their children do something wrong, they never scold them. As a result, their children become selfish. They are seldom thankful for what their parents have done for them. Some of them lack confidence and are not good at communicating with others, which will have a bad influence on their future development in the long term. As far as I am concerned, parents should be strict with their children. Only in this way can they learn to be thankful to their parents and be ready to make friends with other people. If not, they will make mistakes and don?t know how to correct them, which will cause great harm to them. DDBCD
