But a public high school in the small, rural town of Boonsboro, Maryland, offers a special program called the Academy.
Top students in the ninth and tenth grades can attend single-sex classes for math, science, English and social studies. The aim is to help teenagers keep their mind on their work by keeping males and females apart. What they really want to do is take that top group of kids and take them to the very highest level they can achieve there, so that they?re prepared for college. Students are invited to enter this program after they finish middle school, and placement in the Academy is voluntary. However, they need high marks and test scores and strong teacher recommendations. They also need to be involved in activities. Almost 350 students have taken part in the Academy. It began as an experiment in 2010. Michael Bair has been at Boonsboro High for twenty years and directs the Academy. His ninth-grade English class for boys centers on books that he believes boys find interesting. He says that the novels the students are reading now are very manly novels. These novels deal with the arrogance (傲慢) of man and the pride of man which finally leads to man?s downfall. One of those books, for example, is The Call of the Wild by Jack London. This classic story tells of a dog stolen from his home and sold to work as a sled dog in Canada?s Klondike Gold Rush. Morgan Fleet, a senior at Boonsboro High, likes being in the Academy. She says boys and girls act differently when they are together in a classroom. She believes this difference seems to prevent her from developing herself because she?s more focused on thoughts like “Oh, I wish they would shut up. Oh, what do they think of me??? instead of focusing on “What?s the homework? What?s going on in this class? What?s the lesson?” There is one activity that girls and boys in the Academy do together. At the end of the day, many of them stay and help tutor students who are having trouble in school. 31. What is the purpose of the Academy program? A. To offer a special program in high school. B. To help students concentrate on study.
C. To strengthen sex education for teenagers. D. To start learning college courses earlier. 32. To enter the Academy program, students are NOT required to _________. A. do well in their study C. take part in some activities B. be recommended by teachers D. have worked as volunteers
33. The Call of the Wild is given as an example to show that male students _________. A. should learn more about literature B. should have a sense of protecting the wildlife C. are reading more manly novels D. are interested in stories on animals 34. Which is likely to be Morgan Fleet?s opinion? A. A girl cares about the boys? opinions of her. B. Single-sex classes should be stopped. C. Girls are more focused when studying with boys.
D. Boys and girls act the same in separate classrooms. 35. The passage is intended to _________. A. introduce the single-sex class project B. explain the differences between boys and girls C. persuade students to enter the Academy program D. urge students to work hard in their study B In today?s world of cell phones, mini laptops and MP3 players, most people have at least one time-telling tool with them. Since these devices are so common, is time running out for the 500-year-old watch? According to some consumers, yes. New Jersey teenager Charlie Wollman says a watch is “an extra piece of equipment with no necessary function.” Many young adults agree ─ and use their cell phones to tell time. Louis Galie, a senior vice president at Timex, said that fewer young people wear watches today than five years ago. As a result, some people claim that the watch industry is at a crossroads. However, watchmakers optimistically say that watches regain popularity when consumers reach their 20s and 30s. By then, they are willing to spend money on a quality timepiece that doesn?t just keep good time. Fifty years ago, watchmakers boasted about their products? accuracy. But in recent years, the watch industry has transformed itself into an accessory（附件）business. And for many today, the image a watch communicates has become more important than the time it tells. “Complications” ─ features that go beyond simple timekeeping ─ are an important part of a watch?s image. Today?s watches offer a host of features that suit almost any personality. These features include altitude trackers, compasses, lunar calendars, USB drives, and even devices that measure the effectiveness of golf swings! Creativity is also a key element in today?s watches. For example, Japanese watchmaker Tokyoflash makes watches that don?t even look like watches. The company?s popular Shinshoku model uses different color lights to tell the time. It looks more like a futuristic（极其新潮的） bracelet than a watch. Another Japanese watchmaker, EleeNo, makes a “handless” watch. Using a ring of circles to keep time, this watch makes an excellent conversation piece. Whether a watch communicates fashion sense, creative flair or a love of sports, consumers want their timepieces to stand out. Nowadays, everyone has the same kind of gadget in their bags, so people want to make a statement with what?s on their wrists. Will this interest in wrist fashion last? Only time will tell! 36. Why aren?t watches popular with young people as before? A. Because watches cannot keep good time as cell phones, mini laptops and MP3 players. B. Because watches are featured by the disadvantages of simple function C. Because watches are too expensive to afford. D. Because watches don?t have beautiful appearance as other modern time telling tools.
37. What does the underlined sentence in Paragraph 1 mean? A. Watching-making is facing a survival crisis challenge. B. Watching-making is faced with the developing opportunity. C. Watching-making becomes the sun rising industry. D. Watching-making has a specific development target. 38. It can be implied that _________. A. people will gradually lose interest in watches as they grow older B. watchmakers hardly change the development strategy for watches C. today?s watches are better than those in the past in quality D. customers used to be more concerned with the quality of a watch than with its image 39. The following qualities can make a watch popular EXCEPT _________. A. multifunction B. accuracy C. nice design D. low price
40. What?s the best title of the passage? A. Watches and Teenagers C. The Accuracy of Watches B. The History of Watches D. Watches Tell More Than Time
C Legends about King Arthur have existed since the 6th century. Stories of the man and his doings have grown far beyond anything that could be regarded as factual history. Here are some of the highlights. Arthur was born as a result of the wizardry (法术) of Merlin, who arranged all adulterous liaison between Arthur?s father, King Uther Pendragon, and his lover, a married duchess. Merlin agreed to do this only if the lovers allowed him to bring up the child born of the affair. When Uther Pendragon died some years later, there was confusion in the kingdom about who should inherit the throne. Merlin arranged a pageant （盛会） where many knights 骑士） came to try their （ luck at pulling a sword out of a stone. Whoever successfully extracted the blade（刀刃）was the rightful king. After many a brave knight had tried and failed, Merlin presented the young Arthur who, to everyone?s surprise, easily pulled out the sword. As king, Arthur established the knightly fellowship of the Round table at his castle of Camelot, so appear all the other well-behaved knights associated with the king. The knights of the Round Table spent much of their time on the long search for the Holy Grail. The Grail is the cup used by Jesus at the Last Supper, which was said to be brought to Britain, then somehow lost. It is notoriously hard to get hold of, as finding it requires an almost superhuman degree of moral purity. At last it was the true gentleman Sir Galahad who eventually found it and set off to return it to its rightful place in the Holy Land. Arthur?s death is a matter of some debate. According to legend, one of Arthur?s less intelligent moves was his decision to marry the Lady Guinevere, who fell in love with Sir Lancelot, and their adultery led to war among the knights of the Round Table, ending in the Battle of Camlan and Arthur? s deadly wound. After the Battle of Camlan the wounded king was taken to the mysterious island of Avalon ruled by his sister Morgan Le Faye. She, being skilled in the arts of witchcraft (巫术) and healing, was apparently meant to cure him. But evidently Arthur thought he had little chance, because he gave his sword, Excalibur, to Sir Bedivere to return to the Lady of the Lake, an enigmatic（谜一般的）character from whom Arthur had originally received the blade. Bedivere
hurled the sword over the water, where a strange and frightening hand appeared from the lake to catch it, waved it around for a while and then carried it down to the murky depths where, who knows, perhaps it still lies. As for Arthur, we can only conclude that his sister wasn?t such a good doctor. 41. The passage is mainly about __________. With very little to export other than such farm products as tobacco, cotton and fruit, the country earns enough from ?invisible earnings? to pay for its needed, growing imports. From the sending out of things, the Greeks earn only $285 million; from tourism, shipping and the remittances (汇款) of Greeks abroad, the country takes in an additional $375 million and this washes out the almost $400 million by which imports exceed exports. It has a balanced budget. Although more than one drachma (德拉克马， 希腊货币) out of four goes for defense, the government ended a recent year with a slight surplus（剩余）--- $66 million. Greece has a decent reserve of almost a third of a billion dollars in gold and foreign exchange. It has a government not dependent on coalescing incompatible parties (合并无法共存的党派) to obtain parliamentary majorities. In thus summarizing a few happy highlights, I don?t mean to minimize the vast extent of Greece?s problems. It is the poorest country by a wide margin in Free Europe, and poverty is widespread. At best an annual income of $60 to $70 is the lot of many a peasant, and considerable unemployment troubles the countryside, cities, and towns of Greece. There are few natural resources on which to build any substantial(large and solid) industrial base. Some years ago I wrote here: “Greek statesmanship will have to create an atmosphere in which home and foreign savings will willingly seek investment opportunities in the back ward economy of Greece. So far, most American and other foreign attempt have bogged down in the Greek government?s red tape (官僚 作风) and shrewdness (精打细算) about small points.” Great improvements have been made. As far back as 1956, expanding tourism seemed a logical way to bring needed foreign currencies and additional jobs to Greece. At that time I talked with the Hilton Hotel people, who had been examining hotel possibilities, and to the Greek
government division responsible for this area of the economy. They were hopelessly deadlocked in almost total differences of opinion and outlook. Today most of the incredibly varied, beautiful, historical sights of Greece have new, if in many cases modest, tourist facilities. Tourism itself has jumped from approximately $31 million to over $90 million. There is both a magnificent new Hilton Hotel in Athens and a completely modernized, greatly expanded Grande Bretagne, as well as other first-rate new hotels. And the advent (=coming) of jets has made Athens as accessible as Paris or Rome - without the sky-high prices of traffic-choked streets of either. 46. Which title below best expresses the ideas of this passage? A. Greek income and expenditures B. The improving economic situation in Greece C. The value of tourism D. Military expenditures 47. Many peasants earn less than __________. A. $60 a week B. $10 a month C. $1 a day D. $2 a week 48. The Greek Government spends __________. A. more than 25% of its budget on military terms B. more than its collects C. a third of a billion dollars in gold D. less than 25% of its budget on military terms 49. According to the passage, Greece has __________. A. a dictatorship (独裁国家) B. a monarchy（君主） C. a single majority party D. too much red tape 50. Greece imports annually goods and materials __________. A. totaling almost $700 million B. that balance exports C. that are paid by tourists D. costing $66 million 51. Since I started this company in my kitchen seven years ago, I always dreamt of what it would be some day. Focusing on that goal helps me get through tough times. To get the kind of success that you want, you need to dream big. That?s the starting point. Every success story begins with big dreams. You need to have big dreams for yourself, like being somebody rich, famous or
fulfilled. You need to have a clear goal of what you want to achieve. Also, I think it?s really important that the people you?re working with are as committed to the same goal as you are, so you can support each other and keep each other energetic. B Anita Roddick The Body Shop Inc. In America, we have a shop in Harlem where 50 percent of the profits go into the community development, and the other 50 percent go toward the funding of a similar shop elsewhere in the United States. The pride that shop brings to the staff and local people inspired me. What The Body Shop does successfully is use our facilities in the street and shopping centers to talk about real human issues like AIDS, recycling, human rights, and community service or to encourage people to speak out against anything they consider to be unjust. Knowing our products are symbols of social change is really encouraging. C Ben Cohen Ben & Jerry?s Homemade Inc. I?m energized by the people I work with. I?m very relationship-driven, which I think is different from most entrepreneurs. I?m inspired by doing things that are not normal and that most people think don?t fit into the business world or don?t make any sense. In business, you are judged by the company you keep—from your management team, board of directors, and strategic partners. Maybe the lady you met in a trade association meeting can help you secure funding, or the gentleman at a conference can provide you with management advice. D Richard Melman Lettuce Entertain You Enterprises A number of years ago, I was interviewed by someone who was writing a book on enterprises. He asked me, “What?s the opposite of work?” I answered, “Lazy.” He started laughing and said, “Believe it or not, a lot of entrepreneurs say the same thing.” The average person thinks the opposite of work is play, but to an entrepreneur, work is play. I think it all adds up to having fun. It?s fun to create; it?s fun to entertain, and it?s fun to make people happy with our service. When it stops being fun, I?ll stop doing it. E Frank Toskan Make-Up Art Cosmetics (M.A.C) One of the nicest things anyone ever said to me was, “I hate makeup, but I love M.A.C.” That?s what moves me on. Even people who don?t wear makeup can appreciate our company, what it stands for, its values, and the way we do business. We work from an inverted pyramid, where the customers are always at the top. Our customers inspire me and keep me going. They and our staff, not money, make me enthusiastic. If I had stayed in this business just for the money, I would have closed down years ago. You can?t be everything to everybody. Each of us has our own strengths and weaknesses. To be effective, you need to identify your strengths and concentrate on them. You?ll become more successful if you are able to channel your efforts to areas that you do best. In business, for example, if you know you are good at marketing, then give it full play. Seek help or assistance in areas that you may be poor at, such as accounting or bookkeeping. To turn your weakness into strength, consider taking hands-on learning or training. The generation gap between students and their teachers is becoming more significant with only 3.3 percent out of a survey group of l,000 students from 30 key middle schools in the city saying they are willing to tell their teachers of their inner thoughts. In today?s educational environment, teachers are positioned to be the authority figure for learning instead of also becoming a good friend in the lives of students. As only students with good marks in exams are considered the “apples in the eyes” of the teachers, most students think their teachers to be partial (偏心). “I feel sad to hear such remarks,” said Yu Yi, a well-known special-class teacher. She recalled that in the past, teachers and students would play basketball together or comment on novels while sitting on the grass during a break. But today, study and good marks are the only topics of conversation between students and teachers. “Schools are not only the place where knowledge is imparted (传授) but also where students are taught how to be an upright person.” Yu said. “The success of a person is not merely determined by intelligence but also by emotional state.” Yang Xiong, director of the Juvenile Research Institute, said the educational system which focuses on examinations is to blame. 43. B 第三段说只有具有“an almost superhuman degree of moral purity” （品德纯良几乎是超 人程度） 的人， 也就是在品性上最正派 （morally respectable） 的人， 才能找到 the Holy Grail, 文中是那位真正的绅士（the true gentleman）Sir Galahad 找到的。
A. A. 50. Possible version: Love and Concern Make Ideal Relationship Nowadays，students are more and more unwilling to confess to their teachers for the reasons that they are not equal in position and that teachers lay too much emphasis on the academic performances of the students. While some students might have doubts, I am willing to share my inner thoughts with my teachers. Teachers always show love and concern for students. They are good listeners and it?s easy to seek mental support from them. What?s more, teachers can offer good advice to students. In this case，an ideal relationship between teachers and students is very important. In my opinion, this relationship should be one filled with love, care and understanding, in which teachers and students show respect for each other and exchange ideas freely. To build a relationship of this kind, teachers should become friends of students while students ought to place more trust in their teachers and give voice to their feelings frankly. Only by joint efforts can we enjoy a warm relationship between teachers and students.
