Best Learning English, established in 2010, now has 30 training centers and more than 10,000 students across China. “We plan to expand to 100 training centers by 2015.” said its CEO Wang Ning. Riverdeep International Education Inc, Best Learning’s major competitor, has also enjoyed rapid growth, expanding to more than 140 training centers since 2007. The fast expansion of high - end children’s English education is a result of a more global outlook among China’s new generation of parents. “Young Chinese parents care about whether their children have an international outlook.” said Zhang Yuanmeng, director of China Research Center for Children’s Industry. “The market for high-end English education companies is huge, as Chinese parents believe their children have to deal with competitors all over the world when they grow up.” she said. And this is a sector which is proving attractive to investors. Best Learning English attracted 100 million yuan in its first round of financing in October. However, these companies still need to overcome a number of problems if they want to ensure their further growth. “Human resource management is the primary problem for growing English education companies.” said Zhang, “The business requires high-quality teachers, not only with language skills, but also teaching
skills and an understanding of Western culture. The lack of teachers in big cities is more obvious, since the market is larger there.” she added. “But the good news is that Chinese education companies are recruiting (招募) more teachers from English-speaking countries who are looking for work due to the economic crisis in the West.” 60. Why is high-end children’s English education expanded fast in China? A. High-end English education companies have no competitors. B. Children want to deal with competitors all over the world. C. Owning a smart phone may not be as smart as you think. They may let you surf the internet, listen to music and snap photos wherever you are...but they also turn you into a workaholic, it seems. A study suggests that, by giving you access to emails at all times, the all-singing, all-dancing mobile phone adds as much as two hours to your working day. Researchers found that Britons work an additional 460 hours a year on average as they are able to respond to emails on their mobiles. The study by technology retailer Pixmania reveals the average UK working day is between 9 and 10 hours, but a further two hours is spent responding to or sending work emails, or making work calls. More than 90 percent of office workers have an email - enabled phone, with a third accessing them more than 20 times a day. Almost one in ten admits spending up to three hours outside their normal working day checking work emails. Some workers confess they are on call almost 24 hours a day, with nine out of ten saying they take work emails and calls outside their normal working hours. The average time for first checking emails is between 6 am and 7 am, with more than a third checking their first email in this period, and a quarter checking them between 11 pm and midnight.
Ghadi Hobeika, marketing director of Pixmania, said, “The ability to access literally millions of apps, keep in contact via social networks and take photos and video as well as text and call has made smart phones invaluable for many people. However, there are drawbacks. Many companies expect their employees to be on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and smart phones mean that people literally cannot get away from work. The more constantly in contact we become, the more is expected of us in a work capacity.” 63. What can we conclude from the text? A. All that glitters is not gold. C. Every coin has two sides. B. It never rains but pours. D. It’s no good crying over spilt milk.
64. The underlined word “accessing” in the third paragraph can be replaced by A. calling B. reaching C. getting D. using
65. Which of the following is true according to the text? A. The average UK working day is between nine and twelve hours. B. Nine-tenths spend over three hours checking work emails. C. One fourth check their first mails between 11 pm and midnight. D. The average time for first checking emails is between 6 am and 8 am. 66. What’s the main idea of the text? A. Workaholics like smart phones. C. Smart phones make our life easier. B. Smart phones bring about extra work. D. Employers don’t like smart phones.
Teenagers are often a difficult group. With all those hormones (荷尔蒙) flooding their bodies, they can be moody, unpredictable, and tend to make uncertain choices. But however confusing their teenage years are, kids can still be generally happy, depending on their lifestyle choices. According to a new research by British scientists, teens who don’t smoke, drink only moderately or not at all, and who don’t eat much junk food are likely to be happier than other teens. The study looked at 40,000 British families and came up with some interesting findings. For example, kids who never drank alcohol were up to six times more likely to report ^higher levels of happiness than kids who drank. And teens who smoked were five ^times less /likely to rate high on happiness charts compared to kids who don’t smoke. Same goes for diet and physical activity. The more fruits and vegetables kids eat, and the more hours they spend playing sports, the happier they are.
Now，of course this doesn’t mean that not smoking or drinking, and playing sports guarantees happiness. It could be that kids who have happy character tend to be more active and less addicted drinking or smoking. And it could equally be the case that kids who are unhappy are more related to drinking and smoking and eating junk food. Other studies have shown that exercise is a proven way to treat anxiety and depression. Future studies may support the idea that other healthful behaviors，including refraining (克制）from smoking, drinking, and eating too much junk, can avoid sadness and increase happiness, too. 67. The author developed the second paragraph mainly by ________. A. making comparisons C. offering examples 68. What can we learn from the text? A. Not smoking or drinking guarantees happiness. B. Teens with flooding hormones can not be happy. C. Playing sports can decrease teen’s unhappiness. D. Unhappiness can certainly lead to smoking and drinking. 69. Which of the following might help teens quit anxiety? A. Taking exercise. C. Eating junk food. 70. Which can be the best title for the text? A. Ways to treat anxiety and depression. C. Teenagers shouldn’t drink or smoke. B. Exercise and teenagers, health. D. Teenagers’ lifestyle and their happiness. B. Smoking and drinking. D. Going on a diet. B. providing statistics D. analyzing causes

Text 2 M: Would you like to go to the beach this afternoon? W: I’d like to, but I must go shopping first. I need to buy a blouse to match my pants for the job interview tomorrow. Text 3 M: Yeah, terrible, wasn’t it? I can’t believe all the damage it caused! W: Yes. The whole building was burnt down. Luckily it happened at night, and nobody was hurt. Text 4 W: My bank card and mobile phone were stolen. I’d better go home to make the lost call first. M: Oh, my god. Why not go to the telephone booth to make the call? W: That’s right. Text 5 W: Hi, John. It’s Lisa. I’m on my way home, but the car broke down. Can you collect me at the National Park? M: I’m sorry, Lisa. I’m quite busy now. Can you take a bus home? W: But what about the car? M: Phone a garage, and they’ll collect it. Text 6
M: Do you think you’re a relaxed person? W: Not really. M: What do you think of The Little Book of Calm? M: Do you ever do any physical exercise? W: Yes, I jog every morning and I sometimes walk to work. M: And how do you relax in the evening? W: I have a glass of wine and watch television. Text 7 M: Thank goodness! You’re finally back! W: How was your day, darling? M: Terrible. W: What happened? M: Well, it started off in the usual way. I stopped to pick up my dry cleaning and they had ruined my new jacket. W: Oh, no. M: Yeah. Then I went to have a haircut ? I went to Tony’s. Well, Tony was away. Some other guy was there — I think his name was Jack or something. Anyway, this guy ended up cutting my ear — and badly. Text 8 W: Where are you going on vacation this summer? M: We haven’t decided yet. Mum’s brought a few brochures home and I’ve had a look at them. W: Hmm ? You can go to France and visit castles. M: We did that last year. And it was really boring. What do you think of this one? “Italy
for art lovers. Spend two weeks in Italy. You will visit art galleries in Florence and Venice.” W: I’d like to do that in winter. In summer, I prefer to do things outside. I’d like to go to a hotel with lots of tennis courts. Or learn to water-ski. M: I think this one’s pretty interesting. “Learn Scottish dancing in Scotland.” What do you think? W: I don’t like it. Who wants to go to Scotland and sit in the rain all day? Text 9 W: I saw you on the 7 o’clock news last night. M: Oh, yeah. W: So tell us what happened? M: I was walking alone on the beach, when I heard someone calling out for help. I looked up, and there on the headland was a little kid. He’d climbed way up the cliff and was stuck. W: What did you do? M: My first thought was to run and get help, but the boy was crying, and he looked as though he would fall at any moment. So I climbed up to get him down. The rocks were very loose, and I almost slipped a couple of times. I was beginning to think it wasn’t such a good idea to climb up there without getting help. Then I reached the boy, but then I couldn’t get him down. So we were both stuck. W: So what did you do? M: I yelled for help. Pretty soon there was a small crowd on the beach. One of them called the Coast Rescue Service. After about five minutes there was a helicopter overhead, and we were rescued. Text 10 M: Welcome to our university. Here is some information that may be useful to you. The Student Welfare Office is normally open from 4:00 p.m. till 8:00 p.m. Monday to Friday. Today and tomorrow it will be open from about 9:00 a.m. This is the place to come
if you have any problems. We also give out university identity cards which you need to go to the library and which allow you to get discount at a number of local shops and places of entertainment, such as clubs and cinemas. On Monday and Tuesday of next week, second-year students will be running a book sale in the canteen. Many of the books on your first-year reading list will be available and we suggest you should look here first before spending too much on new books. The university canteen opens from 7:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., selling hot meals, fairly cheap. There is a basic cookery course starting next week. It’s always full, so get your name on the list in the Welfare Office now.
