B Jerry Crew worked for the Wallace Construction Company. In 1958, as he was on his way to work, he saw something extremely frightening. In the mud there were footprints that were almost ten times larger than a normal human foot. Newspaper reporters took pictures of the huge footprints. They published stories one of which coined the term Bigfoot. In 1967, Roger Patterson used a movie camera to take pictures of an ape-like creature moving into a forest on two large feet. Many people said this proved Bigfoot was real. In 2002, a man named Ray Wallace died. He owned the Wallace Construction Company where the mysterious footprints first appeared. Soon after his death, his family said that Mr Wallace had invented Bigfoot. He made the huge feet out of wood and tied them to his shoes. He had made the footprints that frightened Jerry Crew. Where did Wallace get the idea from? He didn’t create the big feet of some kind of ape-man out of thin air. The answer is that large, upright-walking, ape-like creatures had been seen in that part of the country for generations. Before Bigfoot became a popular name for the beast, it was known as the Sasquatch, a Native American word meaning “crazy man of the forest”. Sasquatch had been known to Native Americans for hundreds of years. The joke became so big that Wallace just could not stop. He dressed his wife several times in a monkey suit with large feet. Roger Patterson filmed her walking into the woods. But the Bigfoot story did not die with Ray Wallace. Many people say the Wallace family is lying. They say someday someone will find the creature.
