On this occasion, the work was made less troublesome by the presence of his girlfriend. I left with complete confidence that the older children would do a wonderful job of
babysitting the younger children. Later, I discovered that complete confidence was the last thing I should have left home with. I had decided to return home earlier than planned so that my son and his girlfriend could go out. I called home with this happy news. But instead of hearing his cheerful, grateful voice on the other end of the line, all I heard was the sound of a telephone ringing. It was, I should point out, after 10 p. m., when the two younger children should have been in bed, and when the two older children should have been answering the phone. "I’ll give him a lesson," I said. I decided they must be outside. Why they might he outside at 10:30 on a winter night I had no idea, but it was the only explanation I could come up with. Finally, in desperation, I called his girlfriend's house. After what seemed like countless rings, his girlfriend answered. "Yes," she said brightly, "He's right here." He came on the phone. I was not my usual calm, rational(理智的) self. After all, one of the rules of survival for modern parents is that you can't trust modern teenagers. "Where are the children?" I said. He said they were with him. They had done nothing wrong. My son had taken the younger children over to his girlfriend's house just for ice cream and cake. This was too good to be believed. Well, it turns out that I shouldn't have believed it. It was only part of the truth. The following Saturday evening we were at my parents' home, celebrating my birthday. My oldest son gave me the children's gifts. Mounted and framed were a series of lovely color photographs of my children, dressed in their best clothes, and wearing their most wonderful expressions. They are pictures to treasure a lifetime, all taken by the father of my son's girlfriend. 56. The author went out and left her eldest son in charge of the younger children because ______. A. she knew that her eldest son was a good baby-sitter B. she thought it no hard work to take care of the younger ones C. she believed he could do well with his girlfriend's help D. she could not find a baby -sitter on that winter night 57. When the author called home that evening, she found that ________. A. two younger children had already been in bed B. the children were preparing a birthday gift for her C. her son was quarrelling with his girlfriend D. there was no one answering the telephone 58. What can you learn from the underlined sentence in the fifth paragraph? A. The author didn't believe what her son had told her. B. The author had complete confidence in her son. C. The author believed her son was telling the truth. D. The author was moved by what her children had done. 59. What might the children do that evening? A. They had a birthday party. B. They framed some photographs. C. They had their pictures taken. D. They made some beautiful clothes. 60. What does the author intend to tell us by the story? A. Modem teenagers are not worth trusting. B. It is no easy job to look after young children. C. It's no good to have a girlfriend at an early age. D. Her children have a caring and tender heart. B
"Dr. Papaderos, what is the meaning of life?" The usual laughter followed, and people stirred (骚动) to go. Papaderos held up his hand and stilled the room and looked at me for a long time, asking with his eyes if I was serious and seeing from my eyes that I was. "I will answer your question." Taking his wallet out of his hip pocket, he fished into a leather billfold and brought out a very small round mirror, about the size of a quarter. And what he said went like this: "When I was a small child, during the war, we were very poor and we lived in a remote village. One day, on the road, I found the broken pieces of a mirror. A German motorcycle had been wrecked in that place. I tried to find all the pieces and put them together, but it was not possible, so I kept only the largest piece. This one, and, by scratching it on a stone, I made it round. I began to play with it as a toy and became fascinated by the fact that I could reflect light into dark places where the sun would never shine---in deep holes and crevices (裂缝) and dark closets. It became a game for me to get light into the most inaccessible places I could find. I kept the little mirror, and, as I went about my growing up, I would take it out in idle moments and continue the challenge of the game. As I became a man, I grew to understand that this was not just a child's game but a metaphor for what I might do with my life. I came to understand that I am not the light or the source of light. But light---truth, understanding, knowledge---is there, and it will shine in many dark places only if I reflect it. I am a fragment(碎片) of a mirror whose whole design and shape I do not know. Nevertheless, with what I have I can reflect light into the dark places of this world---into the black places in the hearts of men---and change some things in some people. Perhaps others may see and do likewise. This is what I am about. This is the meaning of my life." 61. On hearing the author's question, Dr. Papaderos _______ at first. A. laughed at his foolishness B. wasn't sure of the answer C. doubted .his seriousness D. wasn't interested at all 62. How did Dr. Papaderos get the small round mirror when he was a child? A. He found it on the road and made it round. B. A dying German soldier gave him as a present. C. He chanced to find it in the street while playing. D. He put the broken pieces together and made it. 63. Why did Dr. Papaderos like the small round mirror so much as a child? A. Because he was too poor to afford other toys. B. Because it could shine the places where the sun couldn't reach. C. Because he believed it would bring good luck to him. D. Because it told him a lot about what life really meant to him. 64. The underlined "metaphor" in the 7th paragraph most probably means A. symbol B. source C. light D. purpose 65. Which of the following might be the best title for the passage? A. Is it better to study in Britain or America or to study in your own country? [ 2 ] The advantages of going to Britain seem obvious. Firstly, you will be able to listen to the language all the time you are in the country. You will be surrounded completely by the language wherever you go. Another advantage is that you have to speak the language if you are with other people. In Italy, it is always possible, in the class, to speak Italian if you want to and the learning is slower. If you have a good teacher in Italy, I think you can learn in a more concentrated way than being in Britain without going to a school. [ 4 ] So, in conclusion, I think that if you have enough time and enough money, the best choice is to spend some time in the UK. This is simply not possible for most people, so being here in Italy is the only (可行的) viable option. The most important thing to do in this situation is to maximise your opportunities: to speak only English in class and to try to use English whenever possible outside the class. 76. One possible version: In China children are the centre of each family. All parents wish their children, especially senior high students, could go to top universities and have a bright future. So they always expect their children to make full use of their time to study. They don't allow them to watch TV, play the computer games or go out to play with their friends. Some students just complain that their parents are only concerned about their grades and not their other needs. In my opinion, our parents are responsible for us. Perhaps they are sometimes too strict with us, but what they are doing is out of nothing but love. The most important thing, I think, is that we should learn to communicate with them. Find the right time for a talk, telling them that you'll never let them down and will work harder to earn trust and respect from them. 附：听力文稿 Text 1 W: Did you hear what the weatherman said just now? However, I have the right qualities to be a singer because I sing well and am good at communicating with others. M: Even though you are pretty good, I think there will be many obstacles. In the first place, you don't have much experience of singing on stage. In the second place, your parents won't support you. W: I have enough confidence to overcome any obstacle. M: Maybe you can become a singer, but you won't have enough time to take care of your parents and go shopping and do other stuff like that. W: It doesn't matter. I can get someone to look after them. I am sure I'll1 be a promising singer because I came first in the singing contest at our school last year. M: I hope your dreams come true. By the way, have you finished your homework yet? Text 9 W: Hi, Henry! It's good to see you again. M: Yes, it's been quite a while, Sally. And you look...different...from the last time I saw you. W: Yeah, ever since I got married I've been putting on weight. My husband's a good cook. M: But don't blame your husband's good cooking. You need to start exercising again. W: I know I should. But after I come home from work, I'm too tired to exercise. And I don't have any place to exercise anyway. M: Have you thought about joining a health club? W: I have. But it's expensive and I just don't have the time. M: I'm a member at Spa Fitness and you'd be surprised how inexpensive a year's membership is and most of the members are just "normal" people who take exercise for about an hour just three times a week. W: Sounds reasonable. I mean, you look strong and handsome enough. M: WeI1, to tell the truth, I haven't always looked like this. After I turned 30, I also started putting on weight. I couldn't fit into my favourite jeans any more. I was feeling fat. I didn't have any energy.
W: That's how I feel. I mean, exercise sounds like something that will make me feel more fired. M: That's what most people think about exercise. The funny thing is, once you take up a regular exercise programme, you start feeling better immediately. Text 10 M: Hi, Joan. W: Hi! M: You look really well! Have you been on vacation? W: Sure have! I was on the West Coast. M: Nice! How was it? W: Terrific. I had a wonderful time. It was really nice to get away from work and stuff. M: Where did you go? W: Los Angeles and San Francisco. M: How did you like Los Angeles? W: Well, it's cleaner than I thought it would be, and there are lots of trees, so I liked it better than I thought I would. But it's huge ! And it's really hard to get around. The bus service is terrible, and of course, they don't have a subway system. We had to rent a car. M: And was the weather good? W: Oh yes. It was nice and warm in Los Angeles. M: What about San Francisco? W: The weather? It was cooler than LA, but it wasn't uncomfortable. M: Cool in San Francisco? That's surprising. W: Yeah, it surprised me a bit, too. And it was a problem because we didn't take any sweaters or anything, but they say it's always like that in August. Anyway, I loved it. It's probably the most beautiful city in the US --- all those hills, the bay, and those charming old Victorian houses. M: So, you liked it better than Los Angeles? W: Absolutely! And there's much more that you can see and do on foot! It's smaller than Los Angeles, so it's so much easier to get around. There are lots of buses and streetcars, and of course, the cable cars, too.
