得分 二、阅读理解

Dogs wag(摇 摆) their tails in different directions depending on whether they are excited and wanting to move for ward or threatened and thinking of moving back, a study has found. Researchers in Italy examined the tail wagging behavior of 30 dogs, catching their responses to a range of stimuli(刺激 物) with video cameras. To conduct the study they chose 15 male dogs and 15 female ones aged bet ween one and six years. The dogs were all family pets whose owners had allowed them to take part i n the experiment at Bari University. The dogs were placed in a large wooden box with an opening at the front to allow for them to view various stimuli. They were tested one at a time. The researchers led by Professor Giorgio Vallortigara of the University of Trieste found that w hen the dogs were shown their owners-a positive experience-their tails wagged energetically to th e right side. When they were shown an unfamiliar human they wagged to the right, but with somewha t less enthusiasm. The appearance of a cat again caused a righthand side wag, although with less intensity again. The appearance of a large unfamiliar dog, similar t o a German shepherd, changed the direction of tail wagging to the left. Researchers supposed the do g was thinking of moving back. When the dogs were not shown any stimuli they tended to wag their tails to the left, suggesting they preferred company. While the changes in the tail wagging were not e asily noticed without the aid of video, it was thought that the findings could help people judge the m ood (心 情) of dogs. Computer and video systems, for example, could be used by professional dog trainers to determine the mood of dogs that they were required to approach.

21. The video cameras were used to catch the dogs’ responses because A.it was easier to catch the dogs’ response changes in the tail wagging B.the dogs were put in the wooden boxes and tested one at a time C.they enabled the dogs’ owners to know about their dogs’ habit

Have you ever wondered why you sometimes take an almost immediate liking for a person you have just met? We often get the first impression of a person based on the color of a person’s skin or the manner in which he or she dressed. Meaning is conveyed not only by words or verbal languages but also by nonverbal communication systems, such as body behaviors. Nonverbal communication is important because we use the actions of others to learn about thei r affective emotional states. Our emotions are reflected in our posture, face, and eyes-such as fear, j oy, anger, or sadness-so we can express them without ever saying a word. For this reason, most of us rely heavily on what we learn through our eyes. Nonverbal communication is significant in human interaction because it is usually responsible for the first impressions. More importantly, those first messages usually influence the perception (感 知) of everything else that follows. Even how we select friends and sexual partners is grounded in fir st impressions with nonverbal communication. Nonverbal communication is important because it is culturerelated. It is based on different beliefs, religions, values and customs in different cultures. When, whe re, how, and to whom people display his or her specific nonverbal behaviors is greatly affected by cu lture and context. Culture determines what the appropriate nonverbal behavior is. For example, feeli ngs of friendship exist everywhere but their expression varies. It may be appropriate in some countri es for men to embrace each other and for women to hold hands; in other countries these displays of a ffection may be shocking. Each culture has its own specific interpretation on nonverbal communicati on. What is acceptable in one culture may be completely unacceptable in another. One culture may d etermine that snapping fingers to call a waiter is acceptable; another may consider this gesture rude. . .

Since the first Earth Day in 1970, Americans have gotten a lot “greener” toward the environme nt.“We didn’t know at that time there even was an environment, let alone that there was a problem w ith it,”says Bruce Anderson, president of Earth Day USA. But what began as nothing important in public affairs has grown into a social movement. Busin ess people, political leaders, university professors, and especially millions of grass.

roots Americans are taking part in the movement. “The understanding has increased many, many tim es,” says Gaylord Nelson, the former governor from Wisconsin, who thought up the first. According to US government reports, emissions (排 放) from cars and trucks have dropped from 10.3 million tons a year to 5.5 tons. The number of citie s producing CO2 beyond the standard has been reduced from 40 to 9. Although serious problems still remain and need to be dealt with, the world is a safer and healthier place. A kind of “Green thinking ” has become part of practices. Great improvement has been achieved. In 1988 there were only 600 recycling programs, today in 1995 there are about 6,600. Advanced lights, motors, and building designs have helped save a lot of energy and therefore prevented pollution. Twentyfive years ago, there were hardly any education programs for environment. Today, it’s hard to find a public school, university, or law school that does not have such a kind of program. “Until we do that, nothing else will change!” say Bruce Anderson.

Many animals recognize their food because they see it. So do humans. When you see an apple or a piece of chocolate, you know that these are things you can eat. You can also use other senses wh en you choose your food. You may like it because it smells good or because it tastes good. You may d islike some types of food because they do not look, smell or taste very nice. Different animals use dif ferent senses to find and choose their food.A few animals depend on only one of their senses, while most animals use more than one sense. Although there are many different types of food, some animals spend their lives eating only on e type. The giant panda eats only one particular type of bamboo. Other animals eat only one type of f ood even when given the choice. A kind of white butterfly will stay on the leaves of a cabbage, even though there are plenty of other vegetables in the garden. However, most animals have a more varied diet. The bear eats fruits and fish. The fox eats small animals, birds and fruits. The diet of these anim als will be different depending on the season. Humans have a very varied diet. We often eat food because we like it and not because it is goo d for us. In countries such as France and Britain, people eat foods with too much sugar. This makes t hem overweight, which is bad for their health. Eating too much red meat and animal products, such a s butter, can also be bad for the health. Choosing the right food, therefore, has become an area of stu dy in modern life.

36. We can infer from the text that humans and animals A.depend on one sense in choosing food B.are not satisfied with their food C.choose food in similar ways D.eat entirely different food 37. Which of the following eats only one type of food? A.The white butterfly. B.The small bird. C.The bear.
