Time: 第 周 第 节 Class: 班 Teaching Goals: 1. To arouse Ss’ interest in learning about art. 2. To develop some basic reading skills. 3. Learn the new words and expressions in this part: abstract, faith, consequently, conventional, typical, evident, adopt, possess, possession, shadow, ridiculous, superb, by coincidence and so on. 4. Enable students to know about the development of western painting. Teaching important & difficult points: Comprehend the passage to know about the development of western painting. develop some basic reading skills Teaching methods: Review, skimming, detailed reading, summary, explanations, task-based language teaching, cooperation Teaching aids: A computer and a projector Teaching Procedures: Step 1. Step 2. Skimming (Purpose: To train the Ss some reading skills). Group work Ask Ss to discuss the title of the text and the headings within it with their partners and answer the following two questions. 1. What is the topic of the text and how is the information organized? It is about Western painting and the information is organized in time periods, from earliest to present time. 2. Skim the first paragraph to find the topic sentence that tells the reader what the text is going to be about. The last sentence. 3. How many styles of Western painting are mentioned in the text? What are they? 1. The Middle Ages (5th – 15th century) During the middle ages, the main aim of painters was to represent __religious themes 2. The Renaissance (15th to 16th century) People became focused_ more on humans and less on religion 3. Impressionism (late 19th to early 20th century) The artists painted outdoors. They want to show__ how light and shadow fell on objects at different times of the day 4. Modern art (20th century to today)Nowadays, styles, Cubism (立体派), Surrealism(超现实主义), Expressionism(表现主义)… Step 3. Careful reading (Purpose: To read the passage in details.) First reading (Purpose: To read the passage part by part to get the main characteristics of each period.) 1.Read the second paragraph together and fill in the chart Period 1 Middle Ages Time 5th-15th century Characteristics of the paintings __religious themes Full of _religious symbols_ painter Giotto di Bondone

2.Listen to Para 3 & 4 and find the key information. In the late 19th century, Europe changed a great deal from a mostly agricultural society to a mostly industrial one (2).Why did the impressionist have to paint quickly?
