Why do men die earlier than women? The latest research makes it known that the reason could be that men’s hearts go into rapid decline when they reach middle age. The largest study of the effects of aging on the heart has found that women’s longevity may be linked to the fact that their hearts do not lose their pumping power with age. “We have found that the power of the male heart falls by 20-25 percent between 18 and 70 years of age,” said the head of the study, David Goldspink of Liverpool John Moores University in the UK. “Within the heart there are millions of cells that enable it to beat. Between the age of 20 and 70, one-third of those cells die and are not replaced in men,” said Goldspink. “This is part of the aging process.” What surprises scientists is that the female heart sees very little loss of these cells. A healthy 70-year-old woman’s heart could perform almost as well as a 20-year-old one’s. “This gender(性别) difference might just explain why women live longer than men,” said Goldspink. They studied more than 250 healthy men and women between the ages of 18 and 80, focusing on healthy persons to remove the confusing influence of disease. “The team has yet to find why aging takes a greater loss on the male heart,” said Goldspink. The good news is that men can improve the health of their heart with regular exercise. Goldspink stressed that women also need regular exercise to prevent their leg muscles becoming smaller and weaker as they age. 21. The underlined word “longevity” in the second paragraph probably refers to “________”. A. health B. long life C. ageing D. effect 22. The text mainly talks about ________. A. men’s heart cells B. women’s aging process、

A. women have more cells than men when they are born B. women can replace the cells that enable the heart to beat C. the female heart loses few of the cells with age D. women never lose their pumping power with age 24. If you want to live longer, you should ________. A. enable your heart to beat much faster B. find out the reason for aging C. exercise regularly to keep your heart healthy D. prevent your cells from being lost

A popular student in her small high school, Katie started college expecting to do well in her courses and be best friends with her roommates. But things didn’t turn out that way. Psych 101, the course she thought would be a first-term favorite, turned out to be a struggle. And her roommates were as different from Katie as the student restaurant’s mystery meat was from her mom’s roasted pork. Living away from home tends to be the toughest adjustment for first-year students. You may feel homesick in your first weeks or months. It can help to call, write, or email your parents and friends making them know how you’re doing. You can also talk with your roommates. As first-year students themselves, they’re probably experiencing many of the same fears and worries that you’re dealing with. But what if you don’t get along well with your roommates? In some cases, it can be a good thing if you and your roommates aren’t much alike. Different views on things may be helpful, so respect your differences no matter what. If you and your roommates don’t get along well, it can help to find someone who you feel does understand you, which should be easy on a campus with so many people. Many schools have student organization nights where all of the campus clubs gather and promote their organizations, so you can meet people with the same interests there as you. You’ll also meet tons of people in class or in your dorm building. As homesickness, painful throats, sprained (扭伤的) ankles and wisdom teeth that act up are common among college students, you should check out your student guidebook or your school’s website to find out information about the university health center. If you think you cannot deal with your problems, make a stop at the school counseling (咨 询)center. First-year troubles are something the counselors know well. You can get help there. 28. From Paragraph 1 we can infer that ____. A. Katie had been worried about the changes before starting her college life B. Katie felt satisfied when her college life started C. Katie wasn’t used to the new environment in college at first D. Katie has fallen behind in her study after the first term in college 29. What’s the author’s suggestion on dealing with homesickness? A. Adjust to it. B. Share fears and worries with your parents. C. Talk to your roommates about it. D. Get along with your roommates. 30. Which of the following ways of dealing with roommates is RIGHT? A. Not trying to change them. B. Not making friends with them. C. Developing the same interests as them D. Not talking with them. 31. What’s the main idea of the text? A. Freshmen may meet many problems. B. Communication is important in college. C. How you can adjust to your first year in college. D. How schools help freshmen to get used to college life.
We all think we know what happiness is. We all seem to be making great efforts towards this goal of happiness but what is it really? It is an agreed fact that all the creatures want happiness and are afraid of pain and sadness. The question, however, is “What is real happiness?” What really is called happiness? The desire for happiness has no meaning without understanding the real nature of happiness. Some thinkers say, “Happiness does not lie in objections of enjoyment; happiness or unhappiness lies in imagination.” To prove their belief, they give examples like the following one: A man has a two-storey house; on the right is a five-storey building and on the left a cottage. When he sees right, he feels unhappy and when he sees left he feels happy. As such happiness does not lie in possession of sensory objects, but in imagination. They advise people to look towards those who have fewer possessions and be happy. If you look towards people having more wealth, you will always be unhappy. It is unreasonable to hold this point of view. It is unkind to regard one happy by imagining that one is better than the poor and the unhappy. “If you want to be happy, look towards the poor.” We know that those poor people cannot satisfy even their basic needs. This attitude satisfies the sense of pride of possession, but this can never be called happiness. Unless we really find where happiness lies, we cannot really be happy. Some ask people to do this and do that and say, “This way your desire will be satisfied. You would get the desired objects and become happy.” People holding these views regard happiness as satisfaction of desires. But it is not possible to satisfy one’s desires because there are countless desires of countless people and the material things are limited. Then new desires arise as soon as the previous ones are satisfied. Therefore, desires, which are changing all the time, can never be satisfied. Happiness is a characteristic of a good life, that is, a life in which a person fulfills human nature in an excellent way. People have a set of purposes which are typically human: these belong to our nature. Happiness is also a condition that must be prepared for, cultivated, and defended privately by each person. People who learn to control inner experience will be able to determine the quality of their lives and come to being happy. Happiness lies in the distribution of easiness among others. Happiness stands for forgiveness and justice. Happiness is the name of struggle and courage. Happiness may be founded in seeking of true knowledge and rule of wisdom. Happiness may be shared in service and duty. This life is combination of joys and sorrows, and honest efforts should be done to make this life journey full of happiness, love, peace and harmony. 32. What is the purpose of the text? A. To show how to achieve happiness. B. To encourage people to achieve happiness. C. To argue how to understand happiness. D. To explain the features of happiness. 33. According to the text, people who think happiness lies in imagination will try to achieve happiness by ______. A. looking towards people having more wealth B. looking towards those with fewer possessions C. imagining how rich you will be in the future D. imagining that you have a five-storey building 34. The author doesn’t think that happiness lies in satisfaction of desires because _______. A. ever-changing desires can never be satisfied B. no desires of a person can be satisfied at all
C. there isn’t enough money to meet people’s needs
D. the desires of a person are
