D a r e to d r e a m a n d a c t ---Jonathan Livingston Seagull

The Author and His Time
? Richard David Bach (June 23, 1936) is an American writer. He is widely known as the

author of the hugely popular 1970s bestsellers Jonathan Livingston Seagull.

The Author and His Time
Richard Bach attended Long Beach State College in 1955. He has authored numerous works of fiction and nonfiction, including Jonathan Livingston Seagull (1970), Illusions (1977), One (1989), and Out of My Mind (1999). He served in the Navy Reserve, then later in the United States Air Force (USAF) as a jet pilot. Most of his books involve flight in some way, from the early stories which are straight forwardly about flying aircraft, to stranger to the Ground, his first book, to his later works, in which he used flight as a philosophical metaphor.

About the book

About the book
Jonathan Livingston Seagull is a great book about dream and courage. It is recommended by many famous people such as Obama and the basketball star Kobe.It also broke the sales record of Gone With The Wind. The main character
A seagull named Jonathan Livingston. It is a seagull that doesn’t want to live by the traditional livingstyle and dares to dream and act to challenge destiny.

The main character
Although he became bone and feather and his parents persuaded him to be a normal seagull, he couldn’t give up flying. He doesn't want to live just for food. In his eyes,he has wings and he must make the best use of them to achieve selfworth.

The plot
Jonathan keeps prectising flying. He didn’t want to live by the traditional living-style. He likes flying and challenging destiny. He refused his parents’ suggestion of being common. He was proud of breaking through the height that a normal seagull could fly, but the whole family was ashamed of what he had done. They thought that he went against their tradition and offended the dignity of their family. So he was cast out of the Gull family and banished to a solitary life on the Far Cliffs. At the Cliffs, he met Sullivan and Chiang. They helped him overcome the feeling of loneliness and fear. Luckily, he got the flying skills.

The plot
In Jon’s opinion, the most important thing in his life is to try his best to develop his potential. Under the help of Chiang, Jon flew to a place where he regarded as heaven. Chiang told him there was no such a place as heaven. Heaven is being perfect. Then he would be ready to begin to fly up and know the meaning of kindness and of love.

The plot
Jon also felt the responsibility of saving the public. He believed there were some young seagulls who were eager to soar in the sky and had the bravery like him to challenge the stupid traditional rules. So he went back to help the young seagulls.
