Urban Development Vera class5 2009140892 Since China?s economic revolution began under the authority of Deng Xiaoping, China?s economy has been developing at a fast speed. All aspects of soci
ety in most places have changed a lot. However, the situations of urban areas and rural areas are becoming more and more different; urban areas develops quickly while rural areas still keep their traditional life style. That causes urban development to be a hot issue. Should China keep on investing lots of money to support urban construction? Is urban development beneficial to all Chinese? Many people believe urban development plays an important role in China?s economic growth. But on the other hand, many people think urban development leads to an unbalanced situation that urban area has become prosperous and developing but countryside still in an undeveloped state, which is very harmful for China?s future. Although urban development improves people?s living standards, obviously urban development has caused many problems and our government should stop it or slow sown the speed of urban development. People who support urban development think it makes numerous contributions to economic growth so urban development must be supported. The foundation of industrial factories, absorbing foreign investment, and cooperation across the company all promotes economic growth. Thomas J. Campanella says in his Urban Development: “China's domestic car market now exceeds America?s and the largest car showrooms in the world today are not in Los Angeles or Houston but the People's Republic” (Campanella, 2). The need for domestic cars stimulates the car industry and other services for cars. China?s economy is on wings. Meanwhile, urban development also improves people?s living standards. The revolutions of social security and health care have achieved success. Social welfare and social facilities are perfect and convenient. China is going to merge together 9 cities including Foshan, Dongguan that lie around the Pearl River Delta. “The idea is that when the cities are integrated, the residents can travel around freely and use the health care and other facilities in the different areas” (qtd. in Moore and Foster, 2) says Ma Xiangming, the chief planner at the Guangdong Rural and Urban Planning Institute. This shows that urban development unites people in a large area and provides more convenience to people. It seems that urban development is so beneficial that nothing can halt it. Furthermore, urban development helps to reduce energy waste. Many energy-saving buildings have beed built which can make full uses of solar energy and heat. In January 2011, Beijng made progress in reducing energy waste that encouraged people to use efficient light bulbs. The effects of this activity are remarkable. On the other hand, there are also many people against urban development. They think urban development has brought about many problems, even potential troubles such as unbalanced development between urban areas and the countryside, traffic troubles or accidents, environmental pollution and a pressured lifestyle. Many seas have been polluted because of oil leak. Urban development creates more rubbish and the way to burn those rubbish leads to air pollution. If urban development still keeps
such a speed, more and more crimes will happen because of the economic gap. If people can not earn enough money to support their lives, they could do some illegal thing like robbing. The high standard of living in big cities has attracted lots of people to rush there. The overpopulation, do and crowded traffic have become troublesome in most cities. Moreover, living in a big city is very expensive. People who are not rich still have to earn money to buy house, or pay money for children?s education. That is why many people cannot bear their living burden anymore and choose to commit suicide. It?s efficient that urban development should be stopped or slowed down. Urban development has shown its power in many fields but obviously its negative influence is overwhelming. First, the development of industry means the reduction of farmlands. Thomas J. Campanella says in his Urban Development that: “The ?spreading pancake? of urban growth in China has devoured some 45,000 sq miles of productive farmland over the last 30 years” (Campanella, 2). Farming is very crucial for rural life as well as cities. If people do not have farmland to produce agricultural products, what would happen to society? What?s more，urban development comes with air pollution, water pollution and noise pollution, which have deeply impinged on people?s daily life and threatened people?s health. The nuclear leak in Japan serves as a warning that urban development is a sharp sword. Finally, urban development has caused a class rift. The rich will be richer and the poor will be poorer. People in urban area have the chance to take good education and enjoy the convenience that the big city provides while people in rural area don?t even have the chance to go to school without a perfect system to secure their living and health. A long time of unfair treatment must cause impetuous conflicts between the two groups. So, it?s very necessary for the country to control the speed of urban development and pay more attention or invest more money to support rural areas. Besides, the government should encourage people to live in the countryside to promote rural area?s economic growth so that the society can be in balance. Stopping or slowing down the speed of urban development is what government should do. Urban development improves living standard, economic growth and helps to reduce energy waste. That?s good. However, the benefits can not make up the environmental pollution, class rift and big economic gap. Urban development should not be supported any more. Slowing down the speed of urban development is the best choice.
