The Importance of Reading Classics
According to a survey conducted on sina weibo, a great proportion of p
eople deem it vital to read classics for it’s advantages of improving people’s critical thinking ability, helping people to be determined or developing people’s asthetic taste. However, at the threshold of a new century, it seems that fewer people have an appetite to pick a classic book though they view classics are definitely indispensible to human beings. The phenomenon that a great many of people become more likely to turn their eyes to nonnutritive tidbits or something draws a depressing picture. The reasons of decreasing numbers of classic book lovers could be ascribed to several reasons. Newly formed fast-food culture may be listed as the primary factor. Full of diversity, much more convience and less time consuming are the merits of fast-food culture, which seems to be more attractive to modern people than the deep-thought old-fashioned classic books. Additionally, increasingly more stress in daily life makes people have less energy to leave himself in a quiet afternoon, drink a cup of tea ,and take out a classic book for reading. Other factors such as too many temptations in life, busy schedules, handy entertaining tools or the proness to plain materials also accounts for shrinking classic book readers. Classic books including economics, psychology, history or so are the huge wealth our ancestors left to us. They help us get sound advice, have intellectual exploration as well as give nutrient to our maturity. Thus, it is essential for us to make the best use of their theory to inaugurate a better future. As we college students, it’s our very time to be pioneers in being exposed to more classic books and popularize the classics. Not only could it bring us rich knowledge both academically and mentally, it is also a positive way to boost our incentives for reading more and broaden our horizon, which will be perfectly good in the long run.
