A A rising population is one of the main reasons that there is global warming. Between 1650 and 1850 the population increased by 0.75 billion people going from 0.25 billion to one billion. From 1930 to the end of the century the population rose from two billion to over six billion. In just a third of the time the population rose by more than five times what it did before. It is expected that this trend in the changing population will continue and could even heighten. The growing population requires increasing amounts of energy. These energy demands and other supplies require production, which almost always involves the emission of greenhouse gases. The more the population increases the more greenhouse gases that are produced and the greater the increase in temperature. The burning of fossil fuels is one of the best-known causes for global warming. The major reason for fossil fuels contributing so much to global warming is the release of carbon that occurs during the burning of fossil fuels. When people burn fossil fuels, they release large amounts of carbon by way of the release of carbon dioxide. The carbon dioxide in the air then leads to global warming. Another source of carbon dioxide comes from deforestation. In forests there is a large amount of carbon that is stored in the trees and other plants. This carbon is out of the atmosphere because the trees consume the carbon from carbon dioxide. When people cut down trees, they are frequently burned. This burning releases the carbon dioxide into the atmosphere that was stored in organic matter. Even when new trees are planted, it can take up to one hundred years to make up for the carbon that was released. It is commonly thought that because trees absorb more carbon dioxide, the atmosphere experiences positive effects. Sophie Armstrong, the writer of Earth Care put it, “There’s no doubt that the earth is becoming warmer because of human activity rather than a random but natural phenomenon. 21. your best pottery and cutting himself in the process. You hang up hurriedly and attend to baby, pottery, etc. Meanwhile, the meal gets burnt. As if this were not enough to reduce you to tears, your husband arrives, unexpectedly bringing three guests to dinner. Things can go wrong on a big scale, as a number of people recently discovered in Parramatta, a suburb of Sydney. During the rush hour one evening two cars collided (猛撞) and both drivers began to argue. The woman immediately behind the two cars happened to be a learner. She suddenly got into a panic and stopped her car. This made the driver following her brake hard. His wife was sitting beside him holding a large cake. As she was thrown forward, the cake went right through the windscreen and landed on the road. Seeing a cake flying through the air, a lorry driver who was drawing up alongside the car, stopped all of a sudden. The lorry was loaded with empty beer bottles and hundreds of them slid off the back of the vehicle and on to the road. This led to yet another angry argument. Meanwhile, the traffic piled up behind. It took the police nearly an hour to get the traffic on the move again. In the meantime, the lorry driver had to sweep up hundreds of broken bottles. Only two dogs benefited from all this confusion, for they greedily ate what was left of the cake. It was just one of those days! 28. Recent research from Germany and Italy shows that heart attacks are more common on Monday mornings and doctors blame the stress of returning to work after the weekend break. The risk of having a heart attack on any given day should be one in seven, but a six-year study helped by researchers at the Free University of Berlin of more than 2,600 Germans showed that the average person had a 20 percent higher chance of having a heart attack on a Monday than on any other day. Working Germans are particularly not protected against attack, with a 33 percent higher risk at the beginning of the working week. Non-workers, by comparison, appear to be no more at risk on a Monday than any other day. A study of 11,000 Italians proved 8 a.m. on a Monday morning as the most stressful time for the heart, and both studies showed that Sunday is the least stressful day, with fewest heart attacks in both countries. The finding could lead to a better understanding of what is the immediate cause of heart attacks, according to Dr. Stefan Willich of the Free University. "We know a lot about long-term risk factors such as smoking and cholesterol (胆固醇) but we don't know what actually causes heart attacks, so we can't give clear advice on how to prevent them." he said. Monday mornings have a double helping of stress for the working body as it makes a rapid change from sleep to activity, and from the relaxing weekend to the pressure of work.
[:]

"When people get up, their blood pressure and heart rate go up and there are hormonal (内分 泌) changes in their bodies." Willich explained. "All these things can have an unfavorable effect in the blood system and increase the risk of a clot (血凝块) which will cause a heart attack." "When people return to work after a weekend off, the pace of their life changes. They have a higher workload, more stress, more anger and more physical activities." said Willich. 32. "Monday morning feeling", as this passage shows, A. is not as serious as people thought B. is the first killer in Germany and Italy C. is harmful to working people in developed countries D.is created by researchers in Germany and Italy 33. To protect people from a heart attack, doctors have paid much attention to A. people's working time C. people's nationalities A. end following EXCEPT A. blood pressure B. heart rate C. hormonal change D. blood type 第二节 (共 5 小题,每小题 2 分,满分 10 分) 根据短文内容, 从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。 选项中有两项为多余 选项。 Tips for Smarter Studying Brushing up (温习) for a school test? Pull up a seat, and start taking notes. 1. 37 Handwriting is slow, so you have to think harder about the material to distill (提取) it. It might seem painful to put pen to paper, but you’ll save study time in the end. 2. Don’t study without practice. 38 The constant repetition of remembering something is not efficient. Searching your brain for what you’re trying to remember keeps things fresher. Experiments showed those who took a test did better on a subsequent test than those who studied. It’s not just about remembering information, but using the brain muscles to practice retrieving (恢 复) the information too. That’s what a test requires of us. 3. Sleep on it. Maybe you are accustomed to staying late before a test. But if you want to keep some information for long, plan your sleep time. Your brain needs time to catch up and process all you’ve stuffed (塞满) in there. 39 4. Test yourself. 40 This goes back to tip No. 2—finding ways to pull things from your mind. Plus, this way, you’ll learn what you need to work on. A. Sleep usually contributes to it. B. Take practice tests repeatedly as you study. C. Surely, you’ll benefit from them. D. Relaxing helps long-term memory. E. Take those notes by hand. F. The best way to learn is to know it by heart. G. Stop re-reading the same passage 20 times. One day a professor was crossing a river by boat. Health Is Wealth Most people try to get fame and wealth but give up their health without hesitation. However, they don’t realize that the biggest wealth is health. As Chairman Mao put it, “Health is the capital of revolution.” Only when having health can we get happiness and enjoy success. Cao Xueqin is a profound lesson for us. He ignored his health when he was writing “A Dream In Red Mansions”. Thus, he

Text 1 W: I’m sorry for making you wait so long. There is a table available now in the non-smoking section. Please follow me. M: Thank you. Text 2 W: Which subject are you least interested in? M: Chinese history. I think, not because the subject is boring, but because of the large amount of material that we have to memorize. Text 3 M: I heard that the bread is wonderful at that baker’s on Lake Drive. Do you know where that is? W: Just follow your nose, and it will surely lead you there. Text 4 M: May I help you? W: Yes, I’ve come to apply for the position of office clerk. M: I’m Edward Watt, the manager of the Human Resources Department. May I ask your name? W: My name is Susan Li. Text 5 W: How can I help you, sir? M: Could you break a 20 for me? W: Sure. How do you want it? M: Could I have two fives and the rest in ones? Text 6 W: When are you going to start? M: Tomorrow morning. W: How are you going there? M: By air. This is my first trip. W: Then you’d better take the umbrella with you. London is famous for its fog and it often rains there. M: Can’t I buy a new one in London if necessary? I don’t like to carry too many things. Text 7 M:Excuse me. Can you help me? I’m trying to find the teachers’ office. W: The teachers’ office? Just go straight down the main road until you get to the first traffic circle. Turn right. And you will see a two-story building with large, blue glass windows. That’s the teachers’ office. M: Oh! I see. Thanks a lot. By the way, do you know any place around here where I can make a phone call? W: Let me see… Yes. I think there’s a phone booth in the student center. M: Thank you. M: You mean you swim all day? W: Oh, no! I swim for about four hours, have lunch and then do track work and body building in the afternoon. I suppose I train until four o’clock in the afternoon. M: That’s a long day. What about your free time. W: Well, I watch a lot of television, but I go to bed early on most nights. M: Thank you, Anne, and good luck to you. Text 10 When I was in middle school, my dream was to be a pilot. But my eyesight wasn’t good enough, so I had to give up that idea. I went to university and studied physics. I wanted to stay on there and do research, but my father died about that time, so I thought I had better get a job and earn my living. I started working in an engineering firm. But then, they appointed a new managing director. I didn’t get on well with him, so I left that company. One day I met a friend who was working for a travel agency. He offered me a job in Spain. I worked there in a travel agency for two years and then they wanted to send me to South America but I had just got married, so I decided to stay here. Then we had a baby and I wasn’t earning enough to support the family. So I started giving English lessons at a school in the evening. I liked English teaching more than working for the travel agency. Then the owner of the school wanted to retire, so he asked me to take over as the director, and here I am now.
