IV. 阅读理解(共 16 题,每小题 1.5 分,满分 24 分) A British judo(柔道) master has been given a big award for making an “outstanding contribution” to his home city. George Kerr, 73, was praised as a “good and beautiful person” as he picked up the Edinburgh Award, which honors people who have made a positive impact(影响) on the Scottish capital. He is the fourth person to receive the honor, following in the footsteps of Ian Rankin, JK Rowling and Sir Chris Hoy, all of whom were recognized for helping to bring international recognition to the city. The Edinburgh?born sporting star, called “Mr. Judo”, said: “It's a fantastic honor to get this. They give it to people who put Edinburgh on the map. It's a great thing to be honored by your own people. It's fantastic when you consider I was a little boy from Craigentinny whose father was a bus driver.” The event saw the unveiling(揭幕) of Kerr's handprints in the City Chambers yard, where they have been carved in Caithness stone alongside those of the previous Edinburgh Award winners. Council leader Jenny Dawe spoke well of Kerr, saying he was a “hugely deserving” member of the outstanding Edinburgh Award “club”. “The council is delighted to present George Kerr with the Edinburgh Award on behalf of the people of Edinburgh,” she added. Lifelong friend and Scottish Hairdresser of the Year Charlie Miller also spoke of a “great, good and beautiful person who inspired a lot of people and is well worth respecting worldwide.” The award follows what the British Judo Association (BJA) president described as an “unbelievable” year. Kerr was elevated to the highest rank of his sport in February 2010 when he became the youngest person ever to be named a 10th Dan, a title which has only been held by 15 people since it first began in the late 19th century. A big congratulation to George! He was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire(CBE) in the 2011 New Year Honors, coming soon after being awarded the Order of the Rising Sun by the Emperor of Japan. 61. It also helps relieve stress, gives you more energy, and makes you proud of what you are accomplishing. Most runners are happy with just these few items: A comfortable pair of running shoes that has good arch and ankle(踝骨) support and allows your feet to breathe properly. A good quality stopwatch such as Penta, ATLAS, or Life Time. A water bottle. If you are a beginner, try following these steps: 1. Walk slowly for 30 minutes. 2. Add short running sessions(期间) into your 30-minute walk. 3. Try a 30-minute run when you feel ready, but never become so breathless that you could not carry on a conversation. You will soon discover benefits from running that you will not want to give up. You will feel more relaxed and focused. Your concentration will improve and you will find that, even though you are taking 30 minutes each day from your busy schedule, you will get more done. BIBLIOGRAPHY(参考文献) 1. Mendez Libby. A. to be a winner, you can never choose to give up B. winners choose ATLAS stopwatches(秒表) C. people can benefit a lot from the sport of running D. running seems to be a challenging task C It is a plain fact that we are in a world where competition is going on in all areas and at all levels. This is exciting. Yet, on the other hand, competition breezes a pragmatic (实用主义的) attitude. People choose to learn things that are useful, and do things that are profitable. Today's college education is also affected by this general sense of utilitarianism(功利主义). Many college students choose business not computing programming as their majors convinced that these professions are where the big money is. It is not unusual to see the college students taking a part-time job as a warming up for the real battle. I often see my friends taking GRE tests, working on English or computer certificates and taking the driving tests to get a license. Well, I have nothing against being practical. As the competition in the job market gets more and more severe, students do have reasons to be practical. However, we should never forget that college education is much more than skill training. Just imagine, if your utilitarianism becomes the main trend on campus, leaving no space for the cultivation(培养) of students' minds, or development of their soul. We will see university is training out well-trained spiritless working machines. If utilitarianism controls society, we will see people lost in the money-making adventures; we will see humanity losing their grace and dignity, and that would be disastrous. I'd like to think society as encouraging and people regard profit or fame only as a horse that pulls the courage. Yet without the driver picking direction the
7

courage would go straight and may even end out in a dangerous situation. A certificate may give you some advantage, but not broad horizons(开阔视野), positive attitudes and personal integrities (正直), which are the wealth you cannot acquire through any quick fixed way. Although in today's world, the highest level of competition may not be that of skills or expertise(专业技术), but vision and strategy, your intellectual quality largely determines how far you can go in your career. 69. The author's attitude toward today's college education is ________. A. positive B. cautious C. critical D. doubtful 70. Many college students choose to major in business because ________. A. a businessman is very likely to make big money B. studying business is less competitive C. too many students have chosen computing programming D. computing programming is not a must for them 71. The author does strongly suggest that ________. A. more competition be encouraged on college campus B. people not ignore the value of broad horizons, positive attitudes and personal integrities C. intellectual quality determine how far one can go in his career D. college students get as many part-time jobs as possible 72. In the author's opinion,________. A. college students are not pragmatic enough B. college students should have drivers pick direction for them C. college education should provide students with more business courses D. college education should value the cultivation of students' minds D CLIMATE science is famously complicated, but one useful number to keep in mind is “climate sensitivity”(敏感度). This measures the amount of warming that can eventually be expected to follow a doubling in the atmospheric concentration of CO2(carbon dioxide). The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change(IPCC), in its most recent summary of the science behind its predictions, published in 2007, estimated (评估) that, in present conditions, a doubling of CO2 would cause warming of about 3℃, with uncertainty of about a degree and a half in either direction. But it also says there is a small probability that the true number is much higher. Some recent studies have suggested that it could be as high as 10℃. If that were true, disaster occurs. But a paper published in this week's Science, by Andreas Schmittner of Oregon State University, suggests it is not. In Dr Schmittner's analysis, the climate is less sensitive to CO2 than was feared. Existing studies of climate sensitivity mostly rely on data gathered from weather stations, which go back to roughly 1850. Dr Schmittner takes a different approach. His data come from the peak of the most recent ice age, between 19,000 and 23,000 years ago. His group is not the first to use such data (ice cores(核), fossils(化石), marine sediments (海洋沉淀物)and the like) to explore the climate's sensitivity to CO2. But their paper is the most thorough. Previous attempts had considered only small regions of the globe. He has collected enough information to make an attempt at recreating the climate of the entire planet. The result offers the rarest of things in climate science—a bit of good news. The group's most likely figure for climate sensitivity is 2.3℃, which is more than half a degree lower than the
8

consensus(公认的) figure, with a 66% probability that it lies between 1.7℃ and 2.6℃. More importantly, these results suggest an upper limit for climate sensitivity of around 3.2℃. Before you take a break and start to celebrate, though, it is worth bearing in mind that this is only one study, and, like all such, it has its shortcomings. And although the study's geographical report is the most comprehensive so far for work of this type, there are still blank areas—notably (明显地)in Australia, Central Asia, South America and the northern Pacific Ocean. 73. The studies conducted by Dr Schmittner's group show that ________. A. the climate may not be so sensitive to CO2 B. IPCC’s predictions in 2007 are completely wrong C. the geographical report is thorough and perfect D. previous studies cover a large regions of the globe 74. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage? A. The group forecasts disasters will surely occur. B. The research will make people feel relaxed and safe. C. Weather stations contribute to climate sensitivity studies. D. The group is the first to explore climate's sensitivity. 75. The consensus figure of climate's sensitivity is about ________. A. 2.3 B. 2.6 C. 2.9 D. 3.2 B. Disagreement Becomes Bigger D. Climate Sensitivity Proves Lower 76. What can be the best title for the passage? A. Natural Disasters Occur C. Research Range Grows

VI. 任务型阅读(共 10 小题;每小题 1 分,满分 10 分) 请认真阅读下列短文,并根据所读内容在文章后表格中的空格填入最恰当的单词。 注意:每空格一个单词。 In 1965, Millard and Linda Fuller decided to trade in their millionaire lifestyle for a simpler and more meaningful life. They made this decision after visiting a community-run farm, where everyone worked together and helped each other. The farm inspired the Fullers to help others, and in 1976, they founded Habitat for Humanity, a non-governmental organization (NGO) that aims to build houses for poor people around the world. Habitat houses are built by volunteers, and the materials used to build the houses are donated by construction companies and suppliers. Groups of people from companies, schools or churches often volunteer to build a house together. Habitat volunteers usually work at the weekend, and it takes over 1,500 hours of work to build one house, so it may take a group several months to do so. Because the Fullers believed that people should actively improve their own lives, those who receive a house must also spend several hundred hours helping build their home or the homes of others. In keeping with their belief that people should help themselves, the Fullers wanted to ensure that houses were not simply handed to people in need. Habitat houses are not free, but they are less expensive than other houses because the organization does not profit from them. People borrow money from Habitat for Humanity as an interest-free loan and then repay it over many years. Habitat for Humanity uses loan payments to invest in building new houses, which can cost from $800 in a developing country to about $ 59,000 in the USA. Habitat for Humanity started in the USA, but today there are volunteers all around the world. In 2000, Habitat for Humanity set up its first office in China in Kunming, Yunnan Province. Since 2000, many volunteers, including middle school and university students from Tianjin, Hong Kong and Guangzhou, have helped build houses in Yunnan. In 2006, Habitat for Humanity joined with the Leprosy Mission International to build houses in Yunnan and Guangxi Provinces for people in need. By building houses for poor people and helping them be responsible for their lives, Habitat for Humanity is building hope around the world.
