SECONDARY CITIES Some smaller cities are stealing the glory. Fort Myers, Fla. experienced double digit (位数) growth in January 2009 over January 2008, based on American Express Travel bookings. Cities like Portland, Ore. are also becoming popular destinations, with Travelocity data showing an increase of 38% over last year. Even Philadelphia’s star is rising, said Travelocity senior editor Shaw Brown. Brown said it’s hard to explain exactly the reason for the boom: it could be a decrease in airfare or hotel prices or excellent marketing. Hotel rates in Fort Myers are down about 10%. But hotel rates in Portland are up, she said. She thinks Philadelphia’s higher popularity is due to good marketing, a decrease in airfare of 16% compared to the overall 8% decrease for domestic flights and more interest in historic destinations in general. FAMILY TRAVEL Rather than take a two-week vacation to Europe, families are going to national parks. David Mandt, spokesman for the Association of Amusement Parks, is cautiously optimistic about the summer season. He said even when gas was $4 a gallon in 2008, people continued to visit theme parks—they simply selected parks closer to their homes. While for years, park operators have used special offers, promotions and discounts to encourage families to visit at a specific time, the deals may be easier to find this year, especially when it comes to packages that include accommodations. Universal Orlando Resort has a deal allowing families to book a three-night package and receive two additional nights free. Packages include accommodations at a hotel near Universal and unlimited theme park admission to both Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure. 59. It can be inferred from the news report that ________. A. the number of visitors to Fort Myers doubled in a year B. secondary cities didn’t enjoy much popularity before C. people visit smaller cities because hotel rates are down D. visitors are more interested in historic destinations now 60. The writer describes what Universal Orlando Resort offers in order to show ________. A. that some packages are easier to find this year B. where families go for their vacation this year C. why people prefer parks closer to their homes D. how families choose packages for their vacation 61. What is the best title for the news report? A. Trip destinations closer to home B. Trip offerings on the increase C. Special travel packages for everyone D. Travel trends in a down economy C Health officials issued a warning over common energy-saving lightbulbs after research showed some types could potentially harm the skin and may even raise the risk of cancer. A study by the Health Protection Agency (HPA) found that some eco-friendly lightbulbs (灯 泡) release levels of ultraviolet (UV) (紫外的) radiation that are above recognized safety limits. The agency urged people who work with lamps nearby to avoid spending more than one hour within a foot of the eco-friendly bulbs. The warning was directed at those using desk lamps for long periods, such as jewellery makers, and others who might have lights close to their faces, such as car mechanics.

John O’Hagan, a scientist at the HPA’s centre for radiation, chemical and environmental dangers, began tests on the lightbulbs after patient groups raised concern about them. Among the groups were patients with a skin disease called lupus, which makes people highly sensitive to light. The tests measured UV light from the lamps and found the highest levels of UV radiation, measured 2cm from the lightbulbs, were equivalent to being outside in direct sunlight in the summer. The most immediate risk from the lightbulbs is a reddening of the skin similar to sunburn, but there is also a small increased risk of skin cancer associated with this, again similar to that of sunburn. The risk of health problems from the lightbulbs was not so high that people should remove them from their homes. People are advised to avoid using open lightbulbs for long close work until the problem is sorted out. It has confirmed that the government will not be reviewing its strategy on introducing energy efficient lightbulbs. 62. Which of the following is true according to the passage? A. All eco-friendly lightbulbs give out levels of UV radiation beyond safety limits. B. Desk lamp users will suffer skin disease caused by UV radiation. C. Symptoms of a skin disease led to the start of tests on the lightbulbs by HPA. D. Patients affected by exposure to UV radiation are highly sensitive to light. 63. The underlined word “equivalent” in Paragraph 4 most probably means ________. A. equal B. vital C. relevant D. harmful 64. In order not to be harmed by the UV radiation from some lightbulbs, people should ________. A. stop using eco-friendly lightbulbs at home B. avoid using open lightbulbs for long close work C. take care not to expose their skin to direct sunlight D. urge the government to ban the use of lightbulbs 65. In the next part, the author would most probably further explain _________. A. why people needn’t remove the lightbulbs from their homes B. how researchers have planned to sort out the problem C. how long people should work close to the open lightbulbs D. how the government has responded to HPA’s discovery D Having driven almost thirty hours, I decided to stay in South Carolina for a few days. The next morning, I purchased a three-day fishing license and bait (饵料) before heading to the lake. Opening my trunk, I carefully took out my fishing gear (用具), put it on the lake’s edge, baited up and began to fish. “Good morning,” said someone, walking up from behind me. Turning around, I saw a game warden (猎场管理员) with a clip-board. “Good morning,” I said, nodding my head. “Catch any fish?” he asked. “No sir, just relaxing and killing time.” “Can I see your fishing license?” I handed him the license I had purchased at the bait shop. “Can I see your driver’s license, too?” he requested. “I see the name on the driver’s license is spelled Kiser and the name on the fishing license is

Kaiser,” said the warden. “The gentleman at the bait shop must have written it wrong,” I told him. “Well, I’m afraid I’ll have to write you up for fishing with an invalid license and take away your fishing gear.” “You’ve got to be kidding,” I responded, with a surprised look on my face. Sure enough I was written up and my fishing gear taken away. I was told that I would have to pay a fine and that my stuff would be sold at auction. I stood there almost in tears as he drove away. Those rods and reels were very special to me. I had used them over twenty years, fishing with my friends, who were now all dead. After returning home in Georgia, I telephoned South Carolina trying to explain the situation, but no one would listen. I was told that the Department of Fish and Game had a “zero tolerance” for fishing and hunting violations. Finally, in tears I paid the fine and gave up the fight. Nine months later, I received a letter. I had no idea who it was from as there was no return address. On a plain piece of notebook paper was written “Auction for the Department of Fish and Game held this Saturday at 11:00 am.” On Saturday, at six in the morning I headed to South Carolina. By ten o’clock I had found the auction. There were numerous boats and piles upon piles of fishing equipment. All at once, there it was—my wonderful stuff all thrown in a pile as if it was worth nothing. As the auction began I took my seat. In my wallet was twenty-seven dollars. For more than an hour I waited for my property to be brought to the auction block. “We have three rods and reels here. I guess we will sell this as a unit,” said the auctioneer. “50 dollars,” yelled someone in the crowd. “51 dollars,” yelled another man. I rose from my seat and walked out of the auction. “66 dollars,” I heard as the bidding continued. “100 dollars,” came another bid. The auction became silent. “100 dollars once, 100 dollars twice, 100 dollars three times. Sold for 100 dollars,” went the auctioneer. I walked to my truck, got in and just sat there. Suddenly I heard something hit the side of my truck. Turning around, I saw the back of a man putting my three rods and reels into my truck. It was the same game warden who wrote me the ticket almost a year ago! As I got out of the truck he stuck out his hand and said, “I wasn’t wrong. It’s the law that is wrong.” I shook his hand, thanked him and drove away. I cried as I crossed the South Carolina Georgia state line. 66. The game warden asked the writer for his driving license to __________. B. make sure he had his own driving license A. check if his name was correctly spelled C. find out if his fishing license was valid D. find an excuse to take away his fishing gear 67. How did the writer feel after he telephoned South Carolina? A. Embarrassed. B. Astonished. C. Disappointed. D. Puzzled. 68. Who wrote a letter to the writer telling him about the auction? A. The Department of Fish and Game. B. The game warden. C. A person unmentioned in the passage. D. The auction organizers. 69. Why did the writer walk out of the auction while it was going on?

Everyone needs a break, and vacations are not meant for serious study. Instead, they’re a great way to take a break and enjoy a good book. The Spring Festival is coming up so this is the perfect time to discuss some great English language literature to take on a long train journey or while you’re hanging out with the family. Before getting into the recommendations, we need to determine your English reading comprehension level so you don’t pick a book which is so challenging that it’s stressful or so simple that it’s boring. If you’re at the beginner level, there are two options: reading a children’s book or reading a book that you’ve read in Chinese translation. This will help you get over any unfamiliar words or phrases, since you’re already familiar with the story. If you’re at the intermediate level, popular books like pop fiction, mysteries and thrillers are good options, as they’ll be guaranteed page turners and that will increase the possibility of your getting all the way through the book. For advanced readers, science fiction, classic works of literature or contemporary prize winners (Booker, Nobel, Pulitzer) are good options. The most important thing is to pick a book that you’re really interested in. When I pick up a new book in Chinese, the first few chapters are always really hard to get through, as I have to get accustomed to the way the individual author uses the language. But after the first few chapters, things get a lot easier, especially if I get involved in the story. Some of my favorite Chinese-language eye candy are books that are series like Brothers by Yu Hua or The Dancer by Hai Yan. I like them because there’s always a lot of action and story development to keep me involved, which helps me make it through those first few chapters. Another great way to keep yourself motivated over the holiday is to find a friend who’s interested in reading the same book. You can make goals that you both want to achieve and discuss plot lines or vocabulary issues with each other by SMS or e-mail. I’m currently doing that with my friend Laura. We’ve been doing this since we were classmates in Chinese at college. Some quick recommendations: Harry Potter, start with the first book and go on from there; the Narnia series; anything by US writer Michael Crichton or British writer Agatha Christie; and if you like horror, US writer Stephen King is always unusual and fun. But really you should just find a topic or author that you’re interested in, and the rest will go from there. Happy reading!

The topic of my speech today is “My Attitude to Pursuit of Fashion in School”. Now in our school there is a hot pursuit of fashion. Some students live a very expensive life. They have hairstyles like those of famous stars and wear top brand of clothes and shoes. Some use expensive mobile phones. Personally, I understand why they do so. Firstly, they hope to look smart and special. Secondly, they highly value others’ respect and recognition. In addition, it makes them feel cool. In my opinion, we students should hold the right values. It is how we behave rather than how we appear that makes us cool. It is what achievements we have made rather than what brand we are wearing that makes us respectable. It is how much we care for others rather than how much we spend on gifts and luxuries that make us charming. I think it will make great sense to save the money to help those who still can’t make ends meet. Thank you for listening! (153 words) 录音材料: Text 1 M: Is your phone out of order? I tried to call you last night, but I couldn’t get through. W: Oh, I was on the phone all night. Sorry about that. Text 2 M: Have you taken Professor Young’s exam before? I’m kind of nervous. W: Yes. Just concentrate on the important ideas she’s talked about in class, and ignore the details. Text 3 M: Mrs. Smith just called to say that she cannot come today because something unexpected has come up. W: Oh no! I’ve just declined Mary’s invitation! Anyway, I guess we’ll have to put off the meeting until later. Text 4 W: Did you see Betty today? M: Yes. When I went to the bank this morning, we happened to meet outside. She said she was going to the post office. Why? W: We agreed to meet in the school café at 3 p.m., but she hasn’t turned up yet. Text 5 M: I’m so worried I’m going to do the wrong thing. W: Just take it easy, Jimmy. I’m sure everything will be fine.

M: I hope so. I need the job. W: When you meet the boss, the most important thing is to look him in the eye, smile, and shake hands. Text 6 M: Let’s take a coffee break, shall we? W: I wish I could, but I can’t. M: What keeps you so busy? You’ve been sitting there for hours. You’ve got to walk around. You can’t just stay on computer forever. W: Well, I’m up to my neck in work. I’ve got to finish this report. Sarah needs it by noon. I don’t want to be scolded if I can’t finish my work by the deadline. M: I understand that, but you’d feel better if you took a break, even for just a short while. Then you’re sure to work more efficiently. Text 7 W: Now Mr. Hardy, has the situation changed since last night? M: No. Mrs. Hamilton is still refusing to talk to us. We’d like her to come out peacefully. The police don’t want to charge her, but … W: Well, it’s her home. M: But nobody else refused to move. You see, we’re going to build over 300 flats in this area in place of the shabby houses. Families are expecting to move into them next year! It’s all being delayed because of one person! W: But Mrs. Hamilton was born in that house. M: Of course. But we have promised to give her a modern flat immediately, a very nice flat for an elderly person living alone. W: So, what will happen next? M: I don’t know, but we can’t wait forever. The police will have to do something soon. Text 8 W: I understand how you feel, sir. But there simply isn’t any room. The person who received your reservation call must have forgotten to write it down. I’m afraid it was just a mistake. She is new, you know. M: Just a mistake? Do you realize that I’ve invited some very important people to dinner? It could cause me to lose an important business partner. W: I’m sorry, sir. I suggest you call them and explain the problem. I’m sure you’ll find several other very good restaurants around here. M: I can’t get in touch with them now. They are probably on their way at this very minute. Surely you could fit one more table in. W: Not unless you’d like me to put you in the hall, sir. M: Well, that’s better than nothing. Text 9 W: Jim, thank goodness, you’ve arrived! The class presentation started half an hour ago, and I was just beginning to panic. M: I’m sorry I’m late, Ellen. I was out of luck this morning. I didn’t think I was going to make it here at all. W: Why are you so late? Our whole presentation depends on those graphs you’re holding. M: Yes, I know. I’ll tell you about it later. First let’s see... Two groups are still ahead of us, aren’t

they? That means I’ve got about twenty minutes to rest. W: You do look tired. What happened? M: I’ve been standing outside for over an hour waiting for a bus. W: Over an hour! I thought your apartment was only a ten-minute bus ride to school. M: Under the normal condition, yes, but the bus was delayed. And when I went to call home for a ride, the bus passed by. Unfortunately, there was no one at home. So I had to wait another forty-five minutes for the next bus. W: Just out of luck! Well, we’d better stop talking. People are turning around and looking at us. Text 10 M: Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen. Welcome aboard Continental Airlines flight CO088 from New York to Beijing.
