Questions 11 through 13 are based on the following passage. There is one language that is used in every country in the world. It’s everyone’s second language. It’s easy to understand. It’s sign language. When you wave to a friend who is crossing the street, you’re using sign language. When you smile at someone, you’re saying, “I want to be friendly”. When you raise your hand in class, you’re saying, “Please ask me. I think I know the correct answer.” Many years ago, a French priest became interested in education for deaf people. He invented a finger alphabet. It’s still in use. People can make signs for letters and spell words with their hands. And deaf people can read and understand them. Soon there were schools for the deaf in many countries. The only university for the deaf is in Washington D.C. 11. What is everyone’s second language? 12. Who invented the finger alphabet? 13. Where is the university for the deaf? Questions 14 through 16 are based on the following passage. Body language is a very useful tool of communication, not only between people but in the animal world as well. In many cases, we produce idioms which are all understandable by borrowing examples from animal communication. For example, we know that an angry cat will raise its back high in a curve. From this starting-point we might hear the expression, “He gets my back up!” meaning “He makes me angry.” In the same manner, we know that many animals, if challenged by attackers, will not turn and run away because this will encourage the attacker to attack them more forcefully. Instead, they will move backwards slowly to get out of harm’s way, always still facing their attacker. We call this action “backing off” and it can be used just as well with humans as with animals. In the case of humans, however, the back-off may not be physical but oral, as in using a kinder tone of voice and gentler words instead of arguing with someone. 14. When does a cat raise its back high in a curve? 15. What will an animal do in order not to be attacked by its enemy? 16. What does “He gets my back up” mean? Part C Longer Conversations Blanks 17 through 20 are based on the following conversation. M: May I ask you some questions? W: What do you want to know about? M: Something about education in England. W: Ok. It’s my pleasure. M: At what age do children start school in England? W: At five years old.
M: Do boys and girls go to school together? W: Yes, they do. M: What exams do the children take first before they go on to university? W: “O” levels and “A” levels first. M: How long do they usually stay at university? W: Three or four years. M: Thank you for telling me so much. W: You’re welcome.
