People living in the country enjoy several advantages that people living in the city cannot enjoy. They are in close c

ontact with nature. They make friends with trees and stones. They breathe fresh air. They fight with strong winds. They listen to the song of birds. This contact with nature is good for health. There are many diseases that are common in the city, but are not to be found in the country, For example, near-sightedness is almost unknown to country people. Because of the absence of cars, one can walk more freely in the country than in the city, There are no rules of the road nor traffic signs to obey.People living in the country can easily get fresh vegetables, fresh fruit and fresh milk, And they get them at lower prices than in the city. Country life is economical in other ways, too. There are practically no temptations to waste money. Country people are mostly honest. They say what they mean, and make and keep promises with sincerity. They do not put on air (摆架子). They do not pretend to have those ridiculous manners which are necessary in what we call polite society. 21. What CAN’T country people often enjoy? A. Musical concerts. B. Fresh air. C. Song of birds. D. Close contact with nature. 22. What is probably more expensive in the country than in the city? A. Vegetables. B. Beer. C. Milk. D. Fruit. 23. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage? A. The Disadvantages of Living in the Country. B. The Expenses of Living in the Country. C. Country Life. D.Healthy Country People

I travel a lot, and I find out different "styles" (风格) of directions every time 1 ask "How can I get tothe post office?" Foreign tourists are often confused (困惑) in Japan because most streets there don't have names; inJapan, people use landmarks (地标) in their directions instead of street names. For example, the Japanese will say to travelers, "Go straight down to the corner. Turn left at the big hotel and go past a fruit market. The post office is across from the bus stop." In the countryside of the American Midwest, there are not usually many landmarks. There are nomountains, so the land is very flat; in many places there are no towns or buildings within miles. Instead oflandmarks, people will tell you directions and distances.

In Kansas or Iowa, for example, people will say, "Go north two miles. Turn east, and then go another mile." People in Los Angeles, California, have no idea of distance on the map; they measure distance in time, not miles. "How far away is the post office?" you ask. "Oh," they answer, "it's about five minutes from here." You say, "Yes, but how many miles away is it?" They don't know. It's true that a person doesn't know the answer to your question sometimes. What happens in such a situation? A New Yorker might say, 'Sorry, I have no idea." But in Yucatan, Mexico, no one answers "I don't know." People in Yucatan believe that "I don't know" is impolite, They usually give an answer, often a wrong one. A tourist can get very, very lost in Yucatan! 24. When a tourist asks the Japanese the way to a certain place they usually _________ A. describe the place carefully B. show him a map of the place C. tell him the names of the streets D. refer to recognizable(可辨认的) buildings and places 25 What is the place where people measure distance in time? A. New York. B. Los Angeles. C. Kansas. D. Iowa. 26. People in Yucatan may give a tourist a wrong answer ________ A. in order to save time B. as a test C. so as to be polite D. for fun 27. What can we infer from the text? A. It's important for travelers to understand cultural differences. B. It's useful for travelers to know how to ask the way properly. C. People have similar understandings of politeness. D. New Yorkers are generally friendly to visitors

To understand how Americans think about things, it is necessary to understand "the point". Americans mention it often:"Let's get right to the point." They will say, "My point is…""What's the point of all this?" The "point" is the idea or piece of information that Americans suppose is, or should be, at the center of people's thinking, writings, and spoken comments. Speakers and writers are supposed to "make their points clear", meaning that they are supposed to say or write clearly the idea or piece of information they wish to express. People from many other cultures have different ideas about the point. Africans traditionally tell stories that express the thoughts they have in mind, rather than stating the point clearly. Japanese traditionally speak indirectly, leaving the listener to figure out what the point is. Thus, while an American might say to a friend, "I don't think that coat goes very well with the rest of your outfit," a Japanese might say, "Maybe another coat would look even better than the one you have on." Americans value a person who "gets right to the point". Japanese are likely to consider such a person insensitive if not rude.

The Chinese and Japanese languages are characterized by vagueness and ambiguity. The precision and directness Americans associate with "the point" cannot be achieved, at least not with any grace, in Chinese and Japanese. Speakers of those languages thus have to learn a new way of reasoning and expressing their ideas if they are going to communicate satisfactorily with Americans. 28 According to the passage, Americans expect speakers and writers to _____. A. express their personal views B. be clear about their main ideas C. be honest about their true feelings D. give as much information as possible 29 Which of the following peoples will tell a story to express what they have in mind? A. Americans. B. Chinese. C. Japanese. D. Africans. 30 The underlined word"outfit" in the third paragraph probably means _____. A. appearance B. behavior C. speech D. clothes

31. In order to communicate with Americans satisfactorily, speakers of Chinese need to _____. A. mind their manners B. explain their reasons clearly

C. change their ways of expressing ideas D. be careful about their choices of words

Helen Keller was born in America in June, 1880. Everything was all right when she was born. But when she was nineteen months old, an attack of fever left her blind and deaf for the rest of her life. She became blind so young that as she grew older, she did not remember being able to see; and she became deaf before she had any idea of the importance of human speech. She lived in darkness and silence. As she grew older, she, too, wanted to express her ideas and feelings. But she realized that she was cut off from others. Her parents were greatly worried. How could anyone get in touch with Helen's mind and intelligence in darkness and silence without speech? Helen was nearly seven before a teacher was found. Her name was Miss Sullivan. Miss Sullivan had a lot of difficulties in teaching Helen Keller. As the child could neither see nor hear, she had to use manual alphabet. But Helen’s energy and intelligence and strong spirit, combined with Miss Sullivan's skill and patience, overcame all the difficulties. As Helen grew up, she became an able student, passed examinations and finally took a university degree in English literature. She then devoted all herself to helping the blind and the deaf. Her personal success, together with the work she has done for others, made

her one of the greatest women in modern times. She wrote many books and "The Story of My Life" is a remarkable one. 32. Which of the following statements is true? A. Helen Keller was born blind and deaf. B. She first became blind and then deaf. C. She became blind and deaf in 1880. D. She became blind and deaf sometime about January 1882. 33. Which of the following statements is not true? A. Helen became blind and deaf because she suffered from a high fever. B. Helen became blind before she could see anything. C. Helen became deaf before she realized how important it was to be able to hear and speak. D. Helen too, wanted to make contact with others with speech. 34. Helen Keller's parents were greatly worried because________. A. she was growing older B. she was cut off from others C. she, too, wanted to express her ideas and feeling but she could not D. she was almost seven years old and yet they were not sure whether they could find a suitable teacher for her 35 Helen was finally successful mainly because of________. A. her parents' help B. the manual alphabet Miss Sullivan taught her C. the help she got when she took a degree D. her hard work, cleverness as well as Sullivan's great continuous efforts 第二节:从短文后的选项中选出最佳选项,有两项为多余选项。10 分 Some Ways to Cheer Up Feeling a little blue 36 ● Exercise When you exercise, your brain releases a chemical called endorphins.
