Teaching plan for Module 5

I. Teaching Material Analysis This part is a reading material about a trip along the Three Gorges by some foreigners, which is related to the topic of this module, and students are familiar with and proud of the Three Gorges. Through this reading material, students will learn more about the Three Gorges and learn to describe what he or she will see or hear when he or she has such kind of experience by using the words, phrases learned from this passage. In addition, this reading material can cultivate students’ patriotic feeling as well as helping them to do their writing task in the following part. II. Teaching aims According to the requirements of the new curriculum standard and the features of the reading material, I set the teaching goals of this class as follows: 1)Knowledge goals To enable the students to learn the new words and phrases about the topic, that is: colleague, downstream, goods, trade, temple, dock, hilly, raft, narrow, detour, legend, deck, distant, exploit, at least, be heavy with. 2) Ability goals (1)To develop the students’ summarizing , guessing ability through having the students comprend the passage and do Part 4 and Part 5 on Page 43 respectively; to develop students’ obtaining detailed information ability through the exercises of Part 3 on Page 43. (2)To enable students to describe similar topics by using the words, phrases and sentence structures learned from this reading material to practice their communicative skills. (3)To enable the students to finish similar writing task on the basis of the words, phrases and sentence structures learned from this reading material to practice their writing ability. 3)Culture awareness, emotions and attitudes goals (1)To make the students learn about the beautiful scenery of our country and love it, loving our country and being proud of our country. (2)To develop the students’ capability of co-operation and competition. III. Important Points The key points and difficult points The key points: (1)The new words and phrases in the reading material: colleague, downstream, goods. trade, temple, dock, hilly, raft, narrow, detour, legend, deck, distant, exploit, at least, be heavy with.

(2)Learn to talk about the geographical features of a certain place. Difficult Points The difficult points: How to talk about the geographical features of a certain place. IV.Analysis of the students It is vital to know about the conditions of the students in the teaching procedure and designing the teaching plan. Students are sure to know about the Three Gorges from media or their Chinese textbooks more or less, especially after the Three Gorges was built. Therefore, students will be interested in learn more about it. As Senior One students, they have the ability to participate in the class activities and cooperate with each other in discussing such topics. V. Analysis of Teaching methods The new curriculum standard advocate the tasked-based teaching approach, which is focused on a main topic, and which provides students with chances to perform a series of tasks . This teaching method emphasizes the combination of cooperation and thinking independently, emphasizing ―learning in use‖ and ―learning in doing‖. Thus it can make students interested in learning and contribute to incidental acquisition. This class I will mainly adopt this teaching method combined with communicative teaching method and audio-visual teaching method, cultivating students’ comprehensive application capability of language. VI. Analysis of learning methods One of the concepts of the new curriculum standard is people oriented , which advocate autonomic learning and cooperative learning is the key process of this kind of study. This class I will have the students cooperate with each others to carry out a series of tasks in pairs and in groups; of course, I will give students enough chances to think independently. VII.Teaching Aids Multi-media computer, PPT, blackboard By using a multi-media computer,or PPT , in the teaching process, from lead –in to presentation to various practices, on one hand , we can convey much more information to the students and finish the teaching task more effectively in the limited 45 minutes; on the other hand, students can experience pictures , sounds or short movies easily and this can attract students’ attention. VIII. Analysis of the teaching procedure Step 1. leading-in activity

I will use one poem by Li Bai, whose title is 《早发白帝城》(朝辞白帝彩云间, 千里江陵一日还。两岸猿声啼不住,轻舟已过万重山) to introduce the topic. And then I will ask the students to do the following task: 1) Do you know where Li Bai was traveling through by boat? 2) Can you name what the three gorges are? To lead in the topic by way of the knowledge of another subject, it is easy to attract the students’ attention and arouse the students’ interest. And then I will say, ―Today we will hear two foreigners tell of what they saw and heard along the Three Gorges.‖ to come to the second step. Step 2 . While—reading During the start of the period, let the students scan the passage to find out the answers to the questions on the screen. 1) Why did the foreigners decide to take a trip along the Three Gorges? 2) Who is the famous poet mentioned In this passage that lived in the 3rd century BC. Through the two questions, I mean to train the students to develop the ability to obtain information quickly. Then I will let the students read the passage carefully; after this, let the students finish the exercises of Part2 on Page 42 , Part 3 on Page 43 and Part4 on Page 43. First, let students check answers with their partners, and then share their opinion with the whole class. Doing this, I intend to develop the students’ ability of summarizing , obtaining detailed information and guessing the meanings of words as well as their cooperative and communicative skills. After finishing the exercises Part4 on Page 43, part of the new words in this passage are dealt with; meanwhile, I will write the new words on the blackboard (trade, distant, goods, legend, colleague). Following this, I will let the students form groups of four, preparing for the following task: 1) describe the two foreigners’ first—day journey 2) describe the two foreigners’ second—day journey. In this part, I mean to develop the students’ ability to tell of something and describe something and their cooperative ability. And I write the following words on the blackboard: The first—day journey: shine brightly, sail downstream, hilly region, bamboo raft, coal boat, dock at, narrow to.

The second—day journey: make a detour, home of Qu Yuan, history, legend, be heavy with, the construction site, the Chinese flag, distant mountain, exploit In the last part of this step, I will provide other contexts and give the meanings of the new words or definitions in English to make sure students know the meanings and use of the words and phrases on the screen. Step3. Post—reading In this step, I will let the students enjoy a 5—minute video, which is about the Three Gorges. Let them prepare a writing about the Three Gorges in groups of four according to what they see and hear on the video. Through this, I intend the students to experience the beautiful scenery of the Three Gorges at another angle to further raise the students’ appreciation of the strong culture and historic character along the Three Gores and their love of our country, and to develop their writing skills as well as cooperative spirits. Step4. Homework I will let the students choose one of the tasks as their after—class activity. 1) Make a comparison between A Trip Along the Three Gorges and My First Ride on a Train. 2) Write one of your visits to some famous place. 3) Download some pictures or obtain some information about the Three Gorges from the computer and share them with your classmates. This step is to extend the task until after class, on one hand, students can consolidate their knowledge; on the other hand, students can form the good habit of autonomic learning and show their interest in English learning.
