Look at this shark, and you can easily see the horns on it and you will know the reason why it is called the horn shark is that it has the broad, flattened head and two large horn-like spines(脊 椎) found behind its eyes and makes it one of the hardiest of all shark species. What makes it unique is that as its enemy attempts to swallow it, the spines on its back will stick into the enemy’s mouth and give a good chance for it to get away. C. Life D. Entertainment

accident happened so long ago. People have come to believe that we are free of threats from asteroids and everything else from space. However, what happened on Feb 15 , 2013 was a reminder that we’re just as vulnerable as the dinosaurs once were. Two objects from space – a meteor (陨石) and an asteroid called 2012 DA14 – visited Earth’s atmosphere on the same day. The former fell in Russia, injuring 1,200 people, while the latter passed by Earth at a record-setting close distance. Scientists had been expecting the asteroid since last year, but the meteor was a surprise. NASA’s telescope system only detects asteroids at least 50 meters in diameter (直径), which is just about the size of 2012 DA14. But the meteor was much smaller, which made it harder to spot. But what if we do spot an asteroid that is headed right for Earth? There are several possible ways in which dangerous asteroids could be made to change its orbit. Which method is best depends on several factors and most importantly – how much time we have to stop it. If there is enough time before the hit, we can send off a heavy spacecraft to travel alongside the asteroid. The gravity from the spacecraft would gradually change the rock’s orbit. Besides that, scientists could one day use sun-powered lasers to either make asteroids disappear or change their course. If there’s not enough time, we’ll have to go after the asteroid with a spacecraft and change its orbit with a crash. Finally, if things are truly desperate, there will be only one choice left – to use a nuclear bomb. That could turn the asteroid into a meteor shower, which would be even more dangerous. 63. The author mentioned the asteroid that led to the dinosaurs’ dying out to ______. A. show that asteroids fall from space frequently B. alert people about the possible danger of objects falling from space C. inform readers about the constant threats the Earth faces D. suggest that there are still many mysteries about the universe 64. The underlined word “vulnerable” in the second paragraph probably means ______. A. unprotected B. lonely C. stupid D. self-important 65. Which of the following statements is TRUE about the meteor that fell to the Earth in Russia? A. It passed by the Earth at a close distance. B. It was spotted by NASA’s telescope system a year ago. C. It is about the same size as the asteroid that passed by the Earth. D. It fell to the Earth and caused great damage to the local community. 66. What is the main idea of the article? A. Learning about asteroids and meteors. B. The threats of objects from space and possible solutions. C. NASA’s latest technology to discover visitors to the Earth from space. D. How to measure the damage of collisions from asteroids and meteors.

It was raining. It was cold. But ever since I left Beijing in August, I had promised myself I would celebrate Chinese New Year – if only to help with my Beijing “homesickness”. Central London was dressed up for the occasion. There was a stage for a big fireworks display for the evening. Even so, it wasn’t like my real Beijing chunjie. Even buying a baozi didn’t cheer me up. It cost about 10 times as much as the real thing does in Beijing and got stuck to its rain-ruined paper bag. Cold, wet and depressed, I ran into a shop for shelter. Suddenly, there it was. Between the packets of dried meat and fish, the bags of rice and the smell of dried noodles in this little Chinese supermarket, I had found home. An hour later, I hurried into my house with bags of frozen jiaozi, packets of sauce and a large bottle of vinegar. I boiled water, tore open the packets, grabbed my chopsticks and settled down to a feast. This, I thought, is a Happy Chinese New Year. I even watched the fireworks on TV. After all, why face the British weather when I can bring China home in one bite? 67. We can conclude from the first three paragraphs that the author ______. A. likes watching fireworks on the boat B. misses Chinese food more than anything else C. finds it great fun to celebrate Chinese New Year D. misses her life in Beijing very much 68. How did the author feel when she found some Chinese foods in a supermarket? A. a little curious B. rather tired C. a bit comfortable D. very depressed 69. Why did the author watch the fireworks on TV? A. She didn’t want to get wet and cold again. B. The square is far away from where she lives. C. She doesn’t like fireworks very much. D. She was too hungry to go out. 70. What is the best title of the passage? A. Unforgettable Chunjie in Beijing B. Wonderful Experience in Britain C. Finding Home in London D. Festival in London 第二节(共 5 小题;每小题 2 分,满分 10 分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Doctors Say Most Heart Disease Preventable Heart disease is the number one killer, worldwide, of men and women over the age of 60. But people of all ages die of heart attacks each year. And while death rates have declined in the U.S. and many western European countries, they are on the rise in the developing world. 71 . No one would have guessed that Barbara Teng would have a heart attack. She was not overweight. She did not smoke or exercise.“In 2004, the week after I turned 49, when I was on a business trip in Chicago, I had a major heart attack," she said. 72 . She now exercises daily, and monitors her heart health. Dr. Patrice Nickens, who is with the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, thinks that heart disease is 82 percent preventable. “ 73 ,” she said, “Men are also facing the same problem, and the key to staying healthy is knowing your numbers”. “Your weight, your blood cholesterol, blood sugar and your blood pressure are important numbers that can help you take action and reduce your risk,” she said. 74 .

African-Americans are at higher-than-average risk for heart disease and stroke; people don't even know they have it, which increases the risk. 听力材料 (Text 1) W: But I may lose my job, doctor. It’s hard to get a job like mine. M: Which would you rather have, health or wealth? (Text 2) M: I heard you’re going to take the written test to get your driver’s license. W: Yeah, two days from now. (Text 3) M: So, where are you taking me? W: Some place you’ve never been before. Donald’s Restaurant. (Text 4) W: Good evening, sir. May I help you? M: Yes. What rooms do you have available? I want to hold a party here. W: How large will your party be? M: Three. Two adults and one child. (Text 5) W: Hey, you look concerned. What’s on your mind? M: The final exam. I’m not fully prepared yet. W: Well, don’t worry too much. You still have three days. M: Yeah, but three days isn’t enough. (Text 6) M: May I help you, ma’am? W: Yes, please. I’m looking for a cotton polo skirt. M: Any particular requirement? W: Not really. M: How about this one? W: I like the design, but I don’t particularly care for the color. Do you have that in any other colors? M: Well, they come in white, pale yellow, red and green. Will a white one do? W: Yes. I prefer white---and may I see that pale yellow coat, too? M: Why, of course. Let’s see…..a white skirt…..and a pale yellow coat. Very nice. Here you are, ma’am. W: Thank you. I’ll take them both. (Text 7) M: Wow, look at the line! We’re lucky that we got to the cinema an hour early to get good seats. W: No joking. I learned my lesson the last time I went to an opening. I didn’t arrive early enough and ended up with a terrible seat all the way in the front row! M: Yeah! I hate sitting in the first row too. W: By the way, thanks for getting this ticket for me. Do you want some popcorn and a drink? M: That would be great! W: Ok. What kind of drink do you want? M: Let me see…..I’ll take a large Coke. As for the popcorn, just a medium one will do. Thanks a lot. (Text 8) W: Did you have a good time on your holiday, Sam? M: Yes, we had a great time. W: What did you do?

M: Well, on Monday, the weather was really fine, so we went for a long walk near the sea. It was beautiful, you can imagine. W: That sounds nice. M: On Tuesday, we wanted to hike up a mountain, but it was a bit rainy and windy, so we visited some museums instead. They were quite interesting. W: Nice. M: On Wednesday, we went shopping in the city. We bought lots of great things for the family, and we spent a lot of money. W: Oh, that always happens on holidays! M: On Thursday we visited a lake. I want to go canoeing, but the water sports center was closed. So we just went swimming. W: Really? Was the water cold? M: Yes, a bit! On Friday we were quite tired, so we went to the beach and relaxed with a few books and some drinks. Saturday we came home! W: Well, it sounds like a great holiday. (Text 9) M: Hello, er... is this the accommodations office? W: Yes, how can I help you? M: Well, I’ve got a bit of a problem. W: What’s that? M: Well, I’m staying in the Godfrey White Dorm, but on Monday, I was told that I have to move out this Thursday. W: Really? How long have you been staying in the Godfrey White Dorm? M: For the last ten weeks. W: Oh, have you been doing one of the summer courses here then? M: Yes, I’ve been doing the Academic Language course since the beginning of July. W: And didn’t you realize that your accommodation was temporary? M: No, I thought I would be able to stay there for the whole year. I didn’t read the small print on the document. Now I see my mistake. W: Oh, dear. So, you’re looking for somewhere else to stay then. M: Yes. W: Well, I’m afraid all the places in the dorms are full. I mean, there may be some students who don’t show up w hen the term starts, but we won’t know that for the next couple of weeks. The best thing you can do is to look for a private house. M: Where can I find out about these houses? W: I’ve got a list here. I can give you a copy of this list and you can ring round. (Text10) The Motor Show will be returning to Eastbrook this July, and if you thought last year’s show was good, you’re going to love the show this year. It’ll be held on the 18th of July, and this year the Motor Show will not take place on the Park School Field like last year, but will take place on the Three Tree Show Ground. This will give a lot more space for car parking, which was a problem last year. There will be lots of great things to see and do. There will be a display of old cars from as early as the 1920s, all in beautiful condition. There will also be a display of cars of the future---cars powered by electricity or the sun. If you want to go to the Eastbrook Motor Show, tickets are twelve pounds for adults and six pounds for children, but you can get a family ticket for two adults and up to three children for thirty pounds. If you want to avoid queues on the day, you should buy your tickets in advance.
