A After graduation I returned home to my small town in Indiana. 1 didn't have a job yet. Mr. Hobbs, a friend of my father's, owned a small shirt factory in town; within the past five years it had grown from twenty to eighty workers. Mr. Hobbs was worried that his plant was getting too big and inefficient, so he asked me to come in on a short - term basis as a consultant. I went to the plant and spent about a week looking around and making notes. I was really amazed at what I saw. Most curious of all, there was no quality control at all. No one inspected the final product of the factory. As a result some of the shirts that were put in boxes for shipment were missing one or two buttons, the collar, even a sleeve sometimes? The working conditions were poor. The tables where the workers sat were very high and uncomfortable. Except for a half hour at lunchtime, there were no breaks in the day to relieve the boring work. There was no music. The walls of the workrooms were a dull gray color. I was amazed that the workers hadn't gone on strike. Furthermore, the work flow was irregular. There was one especially absent - minded young man in the assembly (组装) line who sewed on buttons. After a while I recognized him as “Big Jim,” who used to sit behind me in math class in high school. He was very slow and' all the shifts were held up at his position. Workers beyond him in line on his shift had to wait with nothing to do; therefore, a great deal of time and efficiency were lost as Big Jim daydreamed while he worked. All week I wondered why he wasn't fired. After I made observations for a week, Mr. Hobbs asked me for an oral report of my findings. 46. The shirts from Mr. Hobbs' factory can be described as ____. A. of high quality B. of low quality C. fashionable D. unfashionable 47. Why did Mr. Hobbs ask the writer to the factory? A. The factory was too big. B. The factory was not big enough. C. The factory was not producing fast enough, D. The writer was a college graduate. 48. Which is not likely to happen in the factory? A. New machines will be bought. B. Someone will examine the final products C. The workers will have more rest in the day. D. The factory will be repainted. 49. Big Jim may get fired mainly because ____. A. he was slow. B. he was absent - minded C. he wasted much time D. the work flow was irregular B It's always difficult to admit you are in the wrong. Being human, we all need to know the art of apologizing. Look back with honesty and think how often you've judged roughly, said unkind things, pushed yourself ahead at the expense of a friend. Then count the occasions when you indicated clearly and truly that you were sorry. A bit frightening, isn't it? Frightening because some deep wisdom in us knows that when even a small wrong has been committed, some mysterious moral feeling is disturbed; and it stays out of balance until fault is acknowledged (承认) and

Experts say it all started with a song by the American singer and guitarist Muddy Waters. He was one of the country's top blues musicians until his death in 1983. His music influenced singers like Elvis Presley and Bob Dylan. In 1950, Muddy Waters recorded a song called “Rolling Stone” A British rock group is said to have taken its name from Muddy Waters- song. The Rolling Stones performed for the first time in 1962. The group's members called themselves “the world's greatest rock and roll band.” In 1965, Bob Dylan released his song “Like a Rolling Stone.” It is one of his best known and most influential works. It is an angry song about a woman who was once rich and successful. But now she is on her own, “with no direction home, like a complete unknown, like a rolling stone.”

Thus, we feel extremely stressed. Here are some pieces of advice for us to deal with the situation. 61. ________ We think we are reducing stress by accomplishing (完成) more than one thing at a time, when in fact, we are causing ourselves more stress than ever. Think about getting away from the TV and computer screens that are mental vampires (吸血鬼) , sucking the life out of us by stealing our time and attention. By doing less and by carefully choosing which activities give you the least amount of benefit for the time commitment (保证) they require, you'll actually end up creating more time in your day. 63. Make a list of four things that you would like to accomplish today. Keep the list with you. And stay with each item until you have completed it. Then go to the next item on your list and repeat the process. Keep doing this until you've gotten to the end of your list. Most of us place overwhelming(淹没) demands on ourselves, or we expect far too little of ourselves. The goal is to hit the “ sweet spot(最有效点),” where our expectations of what we can accomplish in any given 24 hour period are in line with reality. If you're afraid that you won't accomplish all four things, well, that's why they invented tomorrow! 64.
