A new generation of treehouses is appearing across the world, and designer Roderick Romero says he knows the reason and he once said, “They’re magical. I’ve never seen someone climb into a treehouse and not smile.” Edisto River Before you can stay in one of the treehouses owned by Carolina Heritage Outfitters, you first have to canoe down the Edisto River. Every home offers cooking equipment and a comfortable sleeping bed. “It’s a really good place to get back to nature,” Romero says. The treehouses have gas stoves and are lit by lanterns. Treehotel Romero was astonished when he first saw the buildings at this hotel 40 miles south of the Arctic Circle in northern Sweden.“It blew my mind. I couldn’t believe what I was seeing,” he says. “The hotel rooms follow fantastic spare Scandinavian design. Architecturally this is one of the coolest ideas for a treehouse.” Hideaway Café While most treehouses are found in the woods, this coffee shop changes the idea with a location in downtown Tokyo. The building itself stands on stilts(桩)with a tree growing through the center of it. The café was the first treehouse designed by Kobayashi Takashi, who has created more than 120 homes. Tongabezi One of the world’s most fashionable treehouses stands in a tree alongside the Zambezi River near Victoria Falls. The large pine deck holds a bed and Turkish carpets. Guests can go on an expedition, or simply stay in their room and watch hippos playing in the river. 21. What Roderick Romero said in the first paragraph means__________. A. people are fond of magic performances. B. It is difficult to build a house in the trees. C. treehouses are popular with many people D. people today don’t like common hotels. 22. Treehotel left a deep impression on Romero probably because of ________. A. its position B. its design C. its height D. its history 23. Which of the following is located in a big city? A. Hideaway Café B. Treehotel C. Edisto River D. Tongabezi B In the United States, Mother’s Day falls on the second Sunday in May. It was back in 1908 when a woman named Anna Jarvis created this unofficial holiday to honor mothers. Traditionally, children and husbands honor mothers of all ages by buying flowers, cards and other gifts or taking them to dinner in a nice restaurant. But today, we instead will talk about some expressions that use the word “mother”. Some cultures believe Mother Earth gave birth to everything that exists on our planet. In Greek mythology, a goddess named Gaia was the great mother of all. She was said to have created the Earth and the Universe. Mother Nature is a little different. This term relates to the natural world as if it were a woman. The mother lode(矿脉) comes from mining. It means a place where the largest amount of gold, silver, or anything else of value can be found. But now, the term mother lode means a rich supply of anything. We often use the word “strike” with this expression. For example, you might say,“ she just graduated from college and struck the mother lode with her new job!” When we call something “the mother of all”, it means it is the biggest or best of something. Here is an example: we are going to throw the mother of all parties this weekend. So you’d better come on time! You might think all expressions about mothers are sweet and loving. Not so. For example, a boy who is “tied to his mother’s apron strings(裙带)”is controlled by his mother. We can also call him a “mama’s boy”. Both of these terms are even more impolite, especially if you are talking about an adult man. 24. The author explains Mother Earth by_________. A. making a comparison B. telling a historical story C. introducing a Greek myth. D. analyzing different words. 25. The underlined sentence in Paragraph 3 means_________. A. she could find something valuable. B. she earned quite a lot from her new job. C. she was trying her best to do her job D. she was busy with her work every day. 26. Which of the following has a negative meaning according to the text? A. Mother Nature B. The mother lode C. The mother of all D. Tied to his mother’s apron strings. 27. What can be a suitable title of the text? A. The history of Mother’s Day B. The legendary life of Anna Jarvis C. Tips on gifts for Mother’s Day

D. Different meanings of mother expressions C Grasse has always been associated with smell. In the Middle Ages it smelt particularly unpleasant due to its leather tanning(制革) industry. The nobles only rarely visited the pretty and charming town to pick up their handmade Grasse leather gloves. In spite of their grand lands in the surrounding countryside, Grasse was certainly a necessary evil with no self-respecting nobles owning buildings there. Molinard, a Grasse tanner(制革工人) himself, created the first Grasse perfume. Word spread like wildfire among the nobles about the designer perfumed gloves. Molinard offered a pair of his gloves to Catherine de Medici( the Queen), who gave plenty of praise to her Grasse perfumed gloves; she almost assured (确保) Grasse’s reputation as the perfume capital of the world. Thanks to Catherine de Medici, Grasse merchants were encouraged to grow the perfume plants that tanners needed to supply perfumed leather to the nobles. Grasse has four perfume factories as well as a perfume school and a perfume museum. Fragonard’s perfume museum is situated on the first floor of its perfume factory and displays an amazing private collection of perfume bottles, presentation boxes, documents and equipment that tells the history of perfume making from its earliest beginnings to the present day. The perfume museum is open every day, Sundays and public holidays included. Grasse is certainly a perfumed heaven, a far cry from its smelly beginning as a leather tanning town. Now famous for a far sweeter smell, Grasse is surrounded by fields of flowers that make real estate(不动产) in Grasse very popular. Those looking for real estate in France would have to go a long way to find anywhere more charming than Grasse with the city of Nice and its airport just a short drive away and plenty of activities to enjoy in the surrounding countryside. Real estate in Grasse is situated between the Southern Alps and the Cote d’Azur, allowing owners the best of both worlds. 28. Why was Grasse considered to be necessary although it was an evil? A. Because it produced leather gloves. B. Because it made the nobles look respectable. C. Because many nobles lived in its countryside. D. Because it was a beautiful and attractive town. 29. According to the text, Fragonard’s perfume museum___________. A. has several perfume factories B. can be visited all the year around. C. is famous for its perfume school D. shows visitors the history of Grasse. 30. The underlined words “a far cry “in the 4th paragraph can be replaced by“_________”

A. a good long cry B. totally absent C. very different D. far distant 31. What is the main idea of the last paragraph? A. Grasse is still less competitive in real estate. B. Grasse is now a perfect place for people to live. C. Grasse is becoming an important tourist attraction. D. Living in Grasse might cause you much inconvenience. D Researchers have studied the placebo(安慰剂) effects for many years. But there are still many unanswered questions. Why is a placebo effective? Mostly, researchers have looked at the placebo effects on physical health. However, a research team in Sweden has produced some interesting findings about the emotional effects of placebos. The team performed a series of experiments. First the researchers showed a group of people unpleasant pictures, like pictures of dead bodies. The people rated(划 分等级) how they felt after seeing the pictures. They gave the highest number to the pictures that gave them the worst feelings. The researchers then gave the people a calming drug. They told the people that the calming drug would decrease the unpleasant feelings from the pictures. When the team showed the pictures again, the people said that they felt much calmer. The following day, the researchers gave the people unpleasant pictures to look at again. Then, they gave them drugs. However, this time they gave them a placebo instead of the calming drug. The placebo was nothing but salt and water. But the people did not know this. After taking the placebo, the people’s ratings still changed. Their unpleasant feelings decreased by almost 30%. It seemed that taking the placebo made them feel calmer. In the experiment, the scientists also used special equipment to look at their brains. The results showed that the brains’ emotional centers were calmer after the people took the placebo. Dr Predrag Petrovic managed the experiment .He said,” The placebo changes what we expect. When we expect that something unpleasant should become less unpleasant, it really does.” 32. What was special about the research carried out by the Swedish researchers? A. It was about the placebo effects on physical health. B. It tested the effects of placebos through experiments. C. It answered many questions about placebo effects. D. It explored the emotional effects of placebo. 33. When the people took the placebo, they probably thought_________. A. they were cheated B. they got salt and water C. they got calming drugs again D. they took more effective drugs.

34. Why did the researchers look at the people’s brains? A. To find out why they felt uncomfortable. B. To see the change in emotional centers. C. To see how emotional centers were formed. D. It’s difficult to judge emotional pain. 第二节 根据短文内容, 从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项, 并在答题卡上将 该项涂黑。选中有两项为多余选项。 (共 5 小题;每小题 2 分,满分 10 分) Many people have a fear of public speaking.
