In 1947 a group of famous people from the art world headed by an Austrian conductor decided to hold an international festival of music, dance and theater in Edinburgh. The idea was to reunite Europe after the Second World War. At the same time, the “Fringe” appeared as a challenge to the official festival.Eight theater groups turned up uninvited in 1947,in the belief that everyone should have the right to perform, and they did so in a public house disused for years. Soon, groups of students firstly from Edinburgh University, and later from the universities of Oxford and Cambridge,Durham and Birmingham were making the journey to the Scottish capital each summer to perform theater by little-known writers of plays in small church halls to the people of Edinburgh. Today the “Fringe”,once less recognized, has far outgrown the festival with around 1,500 performances of theater, music and dance on every one of the 21 days it lasts. And yet as early as 1959,with only 19 theater groups performing, some said it was getting too big. A paid administrator was first employed only in 1971, and today there are eight administrators working all year round and the number rises to 150 during August itself. In 2004 there were 200 places housing 1,695 shows by over 600 different groups from 50 different countries. More than 1,25 million tickets were sold. 24.What was the purpose of Edinburgh Festival at he beginning? A. To bring Europe together again. B. To honor heroes of World War 11. C. To introduce young theater groups. D. To attract great artists from Europe. 25.Why did some uninvited theater groups come to Edinburgh in 1947? A. They owned a public house there. B. University students. C.Artists from around the world. D. Performers of music and dance. 27.We may learn from the text that Edinburgh Festival___. A. has become a non-official event B. has gone beyond an art festival C. gives shows all year round D. keeps growing rapidly In general, people talk about two groups of colors: warm colors and cool colors. Researchers in psychology think that there are also two groups of people: people who prefer warm colors and people who prefer cool colors. The warm colors are red, orange and yellow. Where there are warm colors and a lot of light, people usually want to be active. People think that red, for example, is exciting. Sociable people, those who like to be with others, like red. The cool colors are green, blue and violet. These colors, unlike warm colors, are relaxing. Where there are cool colors, people are usually quiet. People who like to spend time alone often prefer blue. Red may be exciting, but one researcher says that time seems to pass more slowly in a room with warm colors than in a room with cool colors. He suggests that a warm color, such as red or orange
3

is a good color for a living room or restaurant. People who are relaxing or eating do not want time to pass quickly. Cool colors are better for offices or factories if the people who are working there want time to pass quickly. Researchers do not know why people think some colors are warm and other colors are cool. However, almost everyone agrees that red, orange, and yellow are warm and that green, blue, and violet are cool. Perhaps warm colors remind people of warm days and the cool colors remind them of cool days. Because in the north the sun is higher during summer, the hot summer sunlight appears yellow. 28.Which of the following colors belong to cool colors? A. Blue, violet B. Yellow, green C. Black, blue. D. Brown, white 29.Which of the following statements is not true? A. Sociable people like warm colors. B. Warm colors can make people excited. C. People who like to be with others don’t like red. D. Colours and people Mr. Black was the manager of a hotel in Atlanta. One weekend all of the hotels were full because of a large business meeting being held in the city. On Sunday night, three men came into Mr. Black’ s hotel and asked for rooms. Mr. Black told them that there were no more rooms available. The men didn’t know what to do because they had no place to stay in. Mr. Black wanted to help them. He remembered that there was an empty room at the far end of the first floor — Room 112. It was a very small room, and had rarely been used as a guest room before. So, he asked the three men if they would mind sharing that small room. They replied that they would be very satisfied so long as there was a room for them to stay in for the night. Mr. Black then told them that the room would cost them $ 30 in total. On hearing this, each of the three men gave Mr. Black $ 10 before they left for their room. However, Mr. Black soon began to think that $ 30 was really too much for that small room. He called his assistant over and said, “Here is $ 5. Give it back to the three men in Room 112. Each of them paid me $10. That’s too much.” The assistant took the money. While he was on the way to that small room, he thought, “How can three men divide $ 5 ? I’ll give each of them only $ 1 and keep the $ 2 left to myself. The men will be happy to get anything back, and I can also make some money that way. After all, Mr. Black will never know anything about it.” So, the assistant returned only $1 to each of the three men. Each man had first paid $ 10. After the assistant returned $1 to him, each man had actually paid only $ 9. There were three men. $ 9×3=$27. The assistant kept $ 2. $ 27 + $ 2= $ 29. Where is the missing dollar? 32.Why didn’t Mr. Black offer Room 112 to the three men at first? A. The key had been lost. B. It was too small for three men. C. No one had stayed there before. D. That’s why we’re such enthusiastic consumers of “top 10” lists of things to do to be a more productive, promotable, mindful— you name it—leader. But these lists seldom work. What if we didn’t think of self-improvement as work? What if we thought of it as play—specifically, as playing with our sense of self? Traditionally, people work on themselves, committed to doing everything in their power to change their leadership style. You set your goals and objectives, you are mindful of your time, and seek efficient solutions. You’re not going to deviate(偏离) from the straight and narrow. You focus on what you should do, especially as others see it, as opposed to what you want to do. It’s all very serious and not whole of fun. There is one right answer. Success or failure is the outcome. We judge ourselves. In contrast, no matter what you’re up to, when you’re in “play” mode, your primary drivers
6

are enjoyment and discovery instead of goals and objectives. You’re curious. You lose track of time. Like in all forms if play, the journey becomes more important than a pre-set destination. Much research shows how play develops creativity and innovation. Play with your own idea of yourself is similar to playing with future possibilities. So, we stop evaluating today’s self against unachievable ideal of leadership that doesn’t really exist. We also stop trying to will ourselves to “commit” to becoming something we are not even sure we want to be—what we call the “feared self”, which is composed of images negative role models. And, we shift direction from submitting to what other people want us to be to becoming more self-authoring. As a result, when you play, you’re more creative and more open to what you might learn about yourself. Unfortunately, we don’t often get —or give ourselves—permission to play with our sense of self. In life, we equate playfulness with the person who dips into a great variety of possibilities, never committing to any. We find inconsistency distasteful, so we exclude options that seem too far off from today’s “authentic self”, without ever giving them a try. This kills the discontinuous growth that only comes when we surprise ourselves. Psychoanalyst Adam Phillips once said, “people tend to play only with serious things—madness, disaster, other people.” Playing with your self is a serious effort because who we might become is not knowable or predictable at the start. That’s why it’s as dangerous as it is necessary for growth. advise doing sth/advise sb (not) to do sth/advise sb against doing sth 为 advise 的固定词组,against 在此表示“反对,对抗” 。 ; D should have done 考点:情态动词 8.C 【解析】 试题解析:本题考查非谓语动词,非谓语动词作定语前有 the only, the last, the next, the first, the best 等序数词或形容词最高级时,必须用不定式。 wish 后的虚拟语气,如果跟现在相反,用 did/were;跟过去相反,用 had done;跟将来相反,用 would/could/might do; 根据句意,我是希望时间“将来”能退回去,因此选择 B could turn。
