Enquiry(询价)
An enquiry is a request for information about the goods, including catalogues, samples, prices, payment terms, delivery etc.
Enquiries are generally made/sent by buyers/importers to sellers/exporters after seeing an advertisement in newspaper, or visiting a trade fair etc. Enquiries may be made by post, fax, e-mail, even telephone or through face-to-face talk.

Points to remember when writing a specific enquiry ? (1) It is advisable to make a list of information the writer wants to obtain; ? (2) In order to obtain the needed information, enquiries should be tailored to enable the receiver to answer the questions completely. ? (3) You should make the enquiry reasonable.

Quotation/offer(报盘)
A reply to an enquiry is a quotation/offer. A quotation is a statement of the current price of an article that you intend to sell. A quotation is an offer in simple form without fixed time of validity. It mainly deals with price and is usually not legally binding upon the seller.

Background Information
? Offer ? In other words, an offer is the expression of the wishes of the seller to sell particular goods under stated terms (including quantity, prices, time of shipment, terms of payment, etc.). In international business, offers can be divided into two kinds: firm offer(实盘) and non-firm offer(虚盘).

Background Information
? Enquiries mean potential business opportunities. Business people are eager to receive enquiries and will answer them promptly because they promise a future sale. Great care should be taken in responding to them.

Background Information Firm offer(实盘)
Promise to supply certain quantity of goods at a fixed price within a stated period of time. Other terms such as quantity, specifications, packing and payment must be clear and definite. ? A firm offer is binding on the exporter. ? It cannot be revised or withdrawn within the validity(受法 律约束). ? An offer refers to a promise to supply goods on the terms and conditions stated – not only terms of price but all necessary terms of sales.

? An offer letter usually includes the following: ? 1. An expression of thanks for the enquiry, if any; ? 2. Name of commodities, quality, quantity and specifications; ? 3. Price terms, discounts and terms of payment; ? 4. Packing and delivery date; ? 5. (for firm offer) Validity of the offer.

Background Information Non-firm offer(虚盘)
? It is an offer without engagement. ? It always contains a reservation clause like “We offer without engagement…” or “The offer is subject to our final confirmation”, etc. ? It can be revised or withdrawn at any time. ? It may be sent in the form of a letter, a price list, a pro forma invoice, a catalogue, or a quotation sheet.
