Her six-month-old son Corey had swallowed (吞下) an earring and the young mother couldn’t ring for help because something was wrong with her phone. The three teenagers rushed to the aid of Ms Price, called an ambulance (救护 车), calmed her down and waited with her until the ambulance arrived before heading
to school. Ms Price, Corey and his grandmother Joyce Finnie visited the school last Thursday to thank the boys for their kind action. “It’s good to know that there are still some good people who will stop and help,” Ms Price said. “While I was shouting for help, a woman walking her dog went straight past, without stopping. I don’t know what would have happened if these boys had not stopped.” The teenagers were shocked at the attention they received at school for their heroic act but admitted that the incident was nerve-racking(刺激神经的). “We heard her shouting so we knew something wasn’t right,” Andrew said, “We thought someone had died. It was scary（惊慌的）but we just did what we had to do.” Just as proud as the boys’ parents is their principal, Tim McCallum. After two days in hospital, Corey has now fully recovered. “He’s got two new teeth to show,” Ms Price said. “I have to keep a closer eye on him. There are four skills in learning English. They are reading, listening, speaking, and writing. The most important thing you must remember is that if you want to improve your speaking and writing skills, you should first master the skills of reading and listening. Read as much as you can. But your reading must be active. It means that you must think about the meaning of the sentence, the meaning of the unfamiliar words, etc. There is no need for you to pay much attention to grammars or try to understand all the unfamiliar words you come across, but the fact that you see them for the first time and recognize them whenever you see them, for example, in other passages or books, is enough. It would be better to prepare yourself a notebook so you can write down the important words or sentences in it. As for listening, there are two choices: besides reading, you can listen every day for about 30 minutes. You can only pay attention to your reading and become skillful at your reading, then you can catch up on your listening. Since you have lots of inputs in your mind, you can easily guess what the speaker is going to say. This never means that you should not practice listening. For listening you can listen to cartoons or some movies that are specially made for children. Their languages are easy. Or if you are good at listening you can listen to VOA or BBC programs every day. Again the thing to remember is being active in listening and preferably taking some notes. If you follow these pieces of advice, your speaking and writing will improve quickly, and you can be a fluent English speaker one day.
28.According to the writer, which should you improve first among the four skills? A．Reading and listening. C．Writing and speaking. B．Reading and writing D．Speaking and listening.
29.To improve your reading, when you read you should ______. A．look up all the new words in the dictionary B．think about what you are reading actively C．spend more time studying grammars D．copy as many words and sentences as possible 30.The underlined phrase “come across” in Paragraph 2 can probably be replaced by “______”. A．hear B．discover C．meet by accident D．look for
31.The author seems to agree with the view that____. A. everyone should listen to VOA or BBC programs every day B. you needn’t practice listening if you keep on reading every day. C. you should take notes of whatever you are hearing. D. being good at reading is helpful in improving your listening. D What happens inside the head of a soccer player who repeatedly heads a soccer ball？ That question inspired a challenging new study of the brains of experienced players that has caused discussion and debate among soccer players, and some anxiety among those of us with soccer-playing children. For the study, researchers at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York selected 34 adults，men and women. All of the volunteers had played soccer since childhood and now competed year-round in adult soccer leagues. Each filled out a detailed questionnaire developed especially for this study to determine how many times they had headed a soccer ball in the previous year, as well as whether they had experienced any known concussions（脑震荡）in the past. Then the players completed computerized tests of their memory and other learning skills and had their brains scanned, using a complex new M.R.I. technique which can
find structural changes in the brain that can not be seen during most scans. According to the data they presented at a Radiological Society of North America meeting last month，the researchers found that the players who had headed the ball more than about 1,100 times in the previous 12 months showed significant loss of white matter in parts of their brains involved with memory, attention and the processing of visual information, compared with players who had headed the ball fewer times. This pattern of white matter loss is “similar to those seen in traumatic （外 伤的） brain injury ” , like that after a serious concussion, the researchers reported，even though only one of these players was reported to have ever experienced a concussion. The players who had headed the ball about 1,100 times or more in the past year were also generally worse at recalling lists of words read to them, forgetting the words far more often than players who had headed the ball less. 32. The passage is most probably a __________. A. news report C. medicine instructions B. research report D. text for doctors
33. What was used to find the structural changes in the brain? A. Learning skills. C. Special questionnaires. B. Advanced computers. D. A new technique M.R.I.
34. From the passage we can conclude that frequent heading may have _____. A. a significant effect on one’s brain B. little effect on one’s brain C. nothing to do with the brain injury D. one’s memory improved 35. What do we know about the volunteers? A. They were all researchers about soccer. B. They had serious injury on the head. C. They were adults who still played soccer.
