Teaching plan for unit 18, Inventions
The teaching plan consists of five parts: I.Analysis of the teaching material II. Analysis of the teaching methods III. Analysis of the learning approach IV. The teaching procedures V.Blackboard design

Part I. Analysis of the teaching material

1)The position and role of this text “Inventions” is the third period of unit 18. It’s a reading comprehension text. This lesson is very important for the students to learn in that it is related to our thinking strategies and it can improve the students’ ability of creativity and imagination. 2) Knowledge goal: Key words: patent, petrol, reject, otherwise, previous, aware, dusty, pilot, background, etc. Key phrases: allow for, get stuck, break away from, be aware of ,etc.

3) ability goal: ①talk about inventions ②improve the students’ ability of creativity and imagination 4) Moral goal: By learning this text, the students can not only further understand the importance of the creativity, but also learn how to improve the ability of creation. 5) Teaching aims ①to improve the students’ reading ability, such as skimming, scanning. ②to arouse the students’ curiosity about how to become creative. ③by trying the thinking strategies of inventors and scientists, the students can become better problem-solvers and learners.

II. Analysis of the teaching methods
1). The new curriculum emphasizes the principle of “taking the students as the host and the teacher subordinate” and advocates the cooperative learning, task-based learning, communicative learning. Therefore, I’ll create as many chances as possible to make my students participate in ways of “questions and answers”, “group discussion and pair work” and “search for and exchange information”. 2). If the lesson is held in the network classroom, the teacher can divides the students into several groups of 5 or 6 and guides the students’ selfstudy by taking advantage of the modern equipment.

3). It’s commonly said that there are three kinds of learning modalities, namely visual, auditory and kinesthetic. A visual person learns through seeing, an auditory one through hearing and a kinesthetic one through moving, doing and touching. Therefore, I’ll apply multi-functional teaching equipment to cater for the different characteristics of the students’ learning habits.

III. Analysis of the learning approach

Interest is the best teacher. But with the heavy study burden and impact of the traditional spoon-feeding teaching, sometimes the students may lose the interest in learning and are not independent

enough. So how to motivate them, develop their interest and build up
their self-study ability are the first things I am considering about.

IV. The teaching process Task 1.warming-up and lead-in (8mins) Show the students some interesting and humorous inventions, and ask them to try to describe what they have seen in the pictures. (The pictures will not only elicit the topic naturally, but also draws the students’ attention easily.)

Discussing the following two questions:
1.Are some people born creative, or is it possible to learn how to be creative?
We can become more creative by thinking about the way we think and practising good thinking strategies.

2. Do you have to be very intelligent to be an inventor?
No. because creativity is not about getting high scores, having a high IQ or being smart. (Ask the students to try to answer them and give their own opinions, which can get them to use their heads and practise speaking.)

Scanning:Listen to the tape and find out what the following ways mean
Think outside the box Take another look at it

Try new ways to solve a problem

换个角度看问题 Look at a problem in as many ways as possible
Keep trying

Make connections

Try to combine new and old ideas in as many different ways as possible

不断试验 Have a long process of trial and error

(Scanning is an important technique we often use while searching for some specific information among the numerous materials. So we teachers should help the students to master this skill, that is, to move eyes quickly down the page seeking for specific words or phrases.)

2. Careful reading of the fourth paragraph: how can we learn to make connections? Make connections

Combine new and old ideas

Make connections that may seem strange at first

Think of new applications and solutions

(It is a very important question. Whatever we may do with in the future, we need to make connections to solve the problems about our life and work in society. By making connections, we can improve imagination and think up some creative thoughts.)

Skimming: Read the text quickly and find out the main idea of the text.

Practicing good thinking strategies can make us become more creative and imaginative.

(Skimming is to guide the students to get the general idea of the text and improve the students’ summarizing ability.)

4. Brain storms: divide the class into several groups and discuss the following riddles and try to find the answers by using their imagination and good thinking strategies we have just learned. 1.Why can a frog jump higher than a tree? A tree can’t jump. 2.Who never goes to see a doctor,even when he is ill ?

A blind man. 3.It is leaking( 漏水 ) everywhere in the office on a rainy day, why nobody has got wet? Nobody is in. ( As is well known to us all, theory must be put into practice. The “brain storms” is a good way to develop our potentials and imagination.)

Task4. Consolidation (5mins) (Show the students the outline of the text and several vivid examples in order to give a deep impression on them) Strategies to improve creativity --- What are good thinking strategies? ?Think outside the box ?Take another look at it ?Make connections ?Keep trying

Example I
Thomas Edison made a rule saying that he had to make an invention every ten days.

Genius (天才) is 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration(汗水).

Albert Einstein, who changed the world of physics with his Theory of Relativity, preferred images to numbers.

Forget about the numbers… Let’s draw!

Example III

Bionics(仿生学) is a science based on biological behavior that can be applied to machine designs and human development.

petrol is so expensive and it can save a great deal of energy!!!

Task6. Blackboard design:

Words: creative, background, rephrase, reject, get stuck, partial, possibility, perception, otherwise, visible, connection, previous, aware, trial
Phrases: allow for, break away from, be aware of, trial and error

(These words and phrases are very important, so the students must keep them in mind. The list of them is to make it clear that all the students understand them and realize their importance.)
