People who are thinking about adopting a dog as a friend for their cats are worried that they will fight. A recent research has found a new secret of success. According to the study, if the cat is adopted before the dog, and if they are introduced when still young (less than 6 months for cats, a year for dogs), it is highly likely that the two pets will get along swimmingly. Two thirds of the homes interviewed reported a positive relationship between their cat and dog. However, it wasn't all sweetness and light. There was a reported coldness between the cat and dog in 25% of the homes, while fighting were observed in 10% of the homes. One reason for this is probably that
some of their body signals were just opposite. For example, when a cat turns its head away it signals attacking, while a dog doing the same signals giving in. In homes with cats and dogs living peacefully, researchers observed a surprising behavior. They are learning how to talk each other's language. It is a surprise that cats can learn how to talk “dog”，and dogs can learn how to talk “cat”． What's interesting is that both cats and dogs have appeared to develop their intelligence. They can learn to read each other's body signals, suggesting that the two may have more in common than we previously thought. Once familiar with each other's presence and body language, cats and dogs can play together, greet each other nose to nose, and enjoy sleeping together on the sofa. They can easily share the same water bowl and in some cases groom (梳理) each other. The meaning of this research on cats and dogs may go beyond pets—to people who don't get along, including neighbors, colleagues at work, and even world superpowers. If cats and dogs can learn to get along, surely people have a good chance. 4. The underlined word “swimmingly” in Paragraph 1 is closest in meaning to . A. early B. quickly C. sweetly D. violently 5. Some cats and dogs may fight when . A. they are cold to each other B. they look away from each other C. they are introduced at an early age D. they misunderstand each other's signals 6. What can we human beings learn from cats and dogs? A. We should learn to live in harmony. B. We should know more about animals. C. We should live in peace with animals. D. We should learn more body languages.
C I wandered into the small store where I usually buy milk, when the store owner received a call from a customer. The customer and his wife had shopped there several months earlier. He noticed that his wife really liked one thing in the store, so he wanted to buy it as a surprise. But the customer was in Tennessee, far away from the store which was in Maine. What’s more, he had been to the store several months earlier, and it was difficult to believe that the store owner would remember him, or what he was looking for. The store owner took a few close-up photos with her camera, and e-mailed them to the customer on the computer. The customer looked at the photos, decided which one he wanted. They talked and discussed a price over the phone. She took care of the credit card transaction(交 易)online, and promised the gift would be shipped out that afternoon. The store owner was really smart. She was willing to push herself to find new ways to make the transaction actually happen. And it did work. However, it was the first time she had ever done it. I was amazed that the store owner discovered a creative solution that could lead to a new way of doing business. I was impressed by what she did---so easily, but how difficult it is for many of us to make that leap(飞 跃，跳跃). I’m not just talking about technology, but about learning how to adapt to change. Most people hate or fear change unless they get to know exactly what change needs to be made. However, we should realize that challenge and opportunity go hand in hand. 8. According to the passage, which of the following is TRUE? A. The owner often did business by using her camera. B. The customer had ever been to the store before C. The owner and the customer discussed the price on the computer D. The gift was sent out by train that afternoon 9. The author was impressed by the store owner because _________. A. she was always ready to help others B. she told the writer how to run a store C. she was a successful businesswoman
D. she managed to find a new way when facing change 10. What’s the correct order of the store owner’s solution? a. e-mailing the photos to the customer on the computer b. taking care of the credit card transaction online c. taking a few close-up photos with her camera d. talking about the price of the gift with the customer A. bcda B. abcd C. cadb D. cabd 11. Which of the following words can best describe the store owner? A. Creative B. Humorous C. Confident D. Honest
I am a music store owner. One day, when I was cleaning the instruments in my store, I saw an old man come in. His short steps dragged on the carpet. “Is 77 too old to learn the banjo (班卓琴)?” he asked. “You can learn to play it well,” I replied, holding back my doubts. My mind told me I was giving false encouragement. I reached the instructor’s schedule and gave the rates, the available time and the additional information that he would need. To my surprise and delight, the old man, Carl, began banjo lessons three days later with my most patient teacher. With nothing to do at home but practice, Carl made surprising progress. After breakfast he practiced for his required half hour. While waiting for lunch he picked up his banjo again for just a couple of minutes. Since TV was difficult for him to see and hear, he often played the banjo in the evenings. Carl was always early for lessons so it was a surprise that he didn’t arrive one Tuesday. The next morning I listened to the answering machine with sadness. “Carl’s in hospital,” the voice recorded. Two months later, I shared the newspaper obituary with the banjo teacher. We both shed tears for a surprisingly clever banjo student. Several months later, a woman came into the store carrying a plant. “This is for Carl’s banjo teacher,” she said. “I’m his wife, Mary.” “Why did Carl want to play the banjo?” I asked. Mary took a deep breath and let it out slowly. “Carl was at some show when he was 10
years old. He came close to the stage to watch the performers. When they were packing up their instruments, the banjo player said to Carl, ‘You want to see this up close?’ Carl climbed up on the stage and from then on he wanted to play the banjo.” Carl had waited 67 years to realize a dream! Mary gave the plant to Carl’s banjo teacher. “Thank you for the best six months of his life,” she said. 12. How did Carl learn to play the banjo well? A. By taking short cuts. B. By working hard. C. By asking his wife to help him. D. By finding the best teacher. 13. From Paragraph 2, we can know the author ______. A. encouraged Carl though he had doubts B. was giving true encouragement C. didn’t want to encourage Carl D. was unwilling to help Carl 14. The underlined word “obituary” in Para.5 means a notice that _______. A. announces a good piece of news B. announces somebody is needed C. announces somebody has died D. announces a gift for somebody 15. Why did Carl want to learn banjo? A. He wanted to become a banjo performer. B. He wanted to make his dream of his young age come true. C. His wife encouraged him to learn it. D. He wanted to spend the last best six months of his life. 第二节（共 5 小题；每小题 2 分，满分 10 分） 根据短文内容， 从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。 选项中有两项为多余选项。 Change the world I want the world to be a better one because I am in it.
