INT=Interview; CAI=Caitlin; CAM=Cameron; MAR=Maria; STE=Stefan INT: Could you tell us about carnival in New Orleans, Caitlin? CAI: Well, we call it Mardi Gras which is a _F_r_en__ch_ _ex_p__re_s_s_io_n_. It means Fat Tuesday, when you could eat and drink what you wanted, before _g_iv_i_n_g_ u_p_ meat before _E_a_s_te_r_. INT: So is it still a _o_n_e_-d_a_y_ festival?
CAI: Oh, no, it lasts about two months. From the beginning of January to the end of February, _m_o_r_e_ o_r__le_s_s___. INT: What are the _o_r_ig_i_n_s of Mardi Gras? CAI: It was brought to the States by the French, at the beginning of the 18th century, I think. INT: And what’s the _h__ig_h_ _s_p_o_t _ of the festival?
CAI: The parades, and the music, New Orleans _is__f_a_m_o_u__s _fo_r_ jazz, of course ... INT: Do you eat any special food? CAI: Well, there’s King Cake, which is a cake for the _C_a_r_n_i_v_a_l _K_i_n_g_. INT: Is it very special? CAI: Well, _f_u_n_n_il_y_e_n_o_u_g_h_, it isn’t. It’s a _ra_t_h_e_rordinary cake, _m__a_d_e _fr_o_m__ flour and eggs with a bit of sugar _o_n_ t_o_p_. It’s OK,
but I don’t __g_o_ w__il_d__ about it. I’d rather have something with chocolate! But _h_i_d_d_e_n_ inside the cake there’s a plastic baby. INT: Which you can eat? CAI: No, no. The idea is, if you find the baby, then you have to _o_r_g_a_n_i_ze_ a party yourself and _in_v_i_te_ everyone to it. INT: So the _c_e_le_b_r_a_t_io_n_s__ continue ... CAI: That’s right.
INT: Cameron, where is Notting Hill? CAM: It’s a d__is_t_ri_c_t of London, just west of Hyde Park. INT: And it’s famous for its carnival? CAM: That’s right. INT: When is it? CAM: It’s the _l_a_st_ w__e_e_k_e_n_d_ in August. INT: So it lasts for just two days? CAM: Yes. INT: Why isn’t it in February, like a _tr_a_d_i_t_io_n_a_l_ carnival?
CAM: Well in Britain a lot of carnivals are held in the summer, I _s_u_p_p_o_s_e_ because the weather’s better. INT: What are the _o_ri_g_i_n_s of the carnival? CAM: It isn’t very old. After the Second World War a lot of people from Jamaica and other countries in the Caribbean, which _u_s_e_d _t_o_ b__e British colonies, came to London looking for work. But there wasn’t a carnival in London, the only festival was _C_h_r_i_st_m__a_s. But in Jamaica carnival is the
most _im__p_o_r_t_a_n_t festival. And Jamaicans living here really felt _th_e_ _n_e_e_d _f_o_r_ a carnival. So in the _1_9_6_0_s they had the first one. My grandfather was there! It was very small at first, but it grew, and now there are usually _m__o_re_ _th__a_n_ a million people. INT: What about food? Is there a _s_p_e_c_ia_l dish people eat?
CAM: Not really — there’s lots of very good Jamaican food, though, which you can buy in the _s_tr_e_e_t_. The traditional food is _c_h_ic_k_e_n_ with rice and peas, Jamaican style — we eat a lot of that. I _p_r_e_fe_r_ it _t_o_ more spicy food because it’s simple.
INT: People always say Carnival in Rio is special. Maria, you’re from Rio, can you tell us why? MAR: I think it’s because carnival is in _o_u_r_ b_l_o_o_d_! Brazilians _lo_v_e_ carnival. Everybody, I mean, everybody, _t_a_k_e_s p_a_r_t_. INT: When is it? MAR: It’s at the end of the summer, in February.
INT: And it lasts for? MAR: It lasts for _f_iv_e_ _d_a_y_s_, from Thursday to Tuesday. INT: What are the origins of Carnival in Rio? MAR: Well, carnival _w_a_s_b_r_o_u_g_h_t_ to Brazil by the Portuguese, but carnival as we know it today, with the street parades, _d_a_te_s_b_a_c_k__ to 1850. INT: What’s the high spot of the festival?
MAR: I think it’s got to be the samba school parades. The samba, you know, is the ___ty_p_i_caBlrazilian dance, whose origins _g_o_ b__a_ck_ to Africa. There are a lot of samba schools in the town, and during carnival there is a _c_o_m_p_e_t_it_i_o_n between them. It’s really_e_x_c_it_i_n_g_. INT: Is there a special carnival dish?
MAR: The typical food is called Feijoada, which is _b_a_s_ic_a_l_ly_ p__o_rk_ with beans and garlic. I really like it. It’s rather rich and very _t_a_st_y_. You can _w_a_s_h_ it _d_o_w_n_ with beer, or an alcoholic fruit juice called batidas, or beer, if you _p_r_e_fe_r_, and then ... INT: And then ...
MAR: Well, then people often like to _w_a_l_k_ it _o_f_f on the beach. INT: Of course, I was forgetting, Rio is a city built _a_l_o_n_g_s_id_e__ a beach. MAR: Yes, it’s the most beautiful beach in the world, and it’s always ____ ___ pfueollpleo, fday and night ... especially at Carnival.
INT: Stefan, what is Oktoberfest? STE: Well, the name in German means October Festival. INT: And it’s held in October? STE: Yes, that’s right, or _a_t_ _le_a_s_t it starts at the end of September and then continues into October. INT: H__o_w_ l_o_n_g_ does it last? STE: For two weeks. INT: And what is the origin?
STE: The origin is rather interesting. It was a _h_o_r_se_ _r_a_c_e_, so it’s got _n_o_th__in_g_ _to__d_o__ w__it_h_ carnival, like the carnivals in Venice or in Rio. The race was held to celebrate a _ro_y_a_l_ w__e_d_d_i_n_g_, between Prince Leopold and Princess Theresa of Baveria, in 1810. But the main thing was always the _f_o_o_d__ and __d_r_in_k__, not the horse race.
INT: So what do you eat at the Oktoberfest? STE: _S_a_u_s_a_g_e_s_. Sausages, and sauerkraut, which is _c_a_b_b_a_g_e_ and _o_n_io_n_s_. It’s typical German food. INT: Do you like sausages yourself? STE: Sure. I think sausages are the greatest _in_v_e_n_t_io_n_ in the world. I just love them. And I quite like cabbage, too.
INT: And what do people drink? STE: Beer, of course. Lots of beer. I read that about _t_e_n_ _m_i_ll_i_o_n __g_la_s_s_e_s_ are drunk every year, that’s probably about ten glasses p__er_ p_e_r_s_o_n_. INT: It must be good beer. STE: Oh, it is. Very good.
