Sharing Beauty It was in October. I was aimlessly wandering down the street, heading into a most gloriously beautiful sunset. I had an urge to speak to someone on the street to share that beauty, but it seemed everyone was in a hurry. I took the next-best action. Quickly I ducked into a department store and asked the lady behind the counter if she could come outside for just a minute. She looked at me as though I were from some other planet. She hesitated, and then seemingly against her better judgment, she moved toward the door. When she got outside I said to her, “Just look at that sunset! Nobody out here was looking at it and I just had to share it with someone.” For a few seconds we just looked. Then I said, “God is in his heaven and all is right with the world.” I thanked her for coming out to see it; she went back inside and I left. It felt good to share the beauty. Four years later my situation changed greatly. I came to the end of a twenty-year marriage. I was alone and on my own for the first time in my life. I lived in a trailer park which, at the time, I considered a real come-down, and I had to do my wash in the community laundry room. One day, while my clothes were going around, I picked up a magazine and read an article about a woman who had been in similar circumstances. She had come to the end of a marriage, moved to a strange community, and the only job she could find was one she disliked: clothing sales in a department store. Then something that happened to her changed everything. She said a woman came into her department store and asked her to step outside to look at a sunset. The stranger had said, “God is in his heaven and all is right with the world,” and she had realized the truth in that statement. From that moment on, she turned her life around. 56. The author asked the woman to go outside to ______. A. admire the sunset A. found her dream job C. worked in a laundry room A. disappointed B. puzzled B There is a lot of talk these days about how kids should be interested in science. Here?s an area of science for everyone, and these cool new books might inspire you to discover your inner scientist. B. cheer her up C. offer some help D. have a chat 57. Four years later, the author ______. B. put an end to her marriage D. lived in the same community C. inspired D. overjoyed

58. After reading the article in the magazine, the author was probably______.

Scaly Spotted Feathered Frilled by Catherine Thimmesh, 58 pages, ages 9-12 Seeing a picture or a model of a dinosaur, do you wonder how anybody knows what they look like? After all, nobody has seen a living dinosaur. This book explains how scientists and artists work together to re-create dinosaurs. As scientific discoveries have been made, the models have changed. Scientific tests may one day expose what a dinosaur?s coloring was, but now artists have to use their imagination to determine how these huge creatures looked. Beyond the Solar System by Mary Kay Carson, 128 pages, ages 10-13 This book takes readers back to the beginnings of space exploration—thousands of years ago, when people began star observation—and forward to today?s search for planets in distant parts of the Milky Way. Along with history lessons, readers get 21 activities, such as making a black hole and creating a model of Albert Einstein?s universe using a T-shirt. The activities are perfect for cold winter days. Ultimate Bugopedia by Darlyne Murawski and Nancy Honovich, 272 pages, ages 7 and older If you?re always on the lookout for butterflies, this book is for you. Hundreds of color photos of common and unusual insects fill this hardcover. There are fascinating stories related to the photos. For example, do you know an insect feeds on the tears of Asian cattle? There?s a question-and-answer section with an insect scientist and advice on how to help preserve endangered insects. Journey Into the Invisible by Christine Schlitt, 80 pages, ages 9-12 If you use a magnifying(放大的)glass, you know a leaf looks quite different. This book explains what microscopes do and then shows what happens to things around the house when watched with this amazing scientific tool. The bacteria in your mouth, when magnified 20,000 times, look a bit like swimming pool noodles. Fascinating photos are paired with suggestions about how to learn about the world around you, just by looking a little closer. 59. Kids interested in pre-historical animals might read ______. A. Ultimate Bugopedia B. Beyond the Solar System C. Journey Into the Invisible D. Scaly Spotted Feathered Frilled 60. Beyond the Solar System is mainly about ______. A. space exploration C. history lessons B. the Milky Way D. Albert Einstein?s universe

61. From the passage, we can learn that ______. A. butterflies are fond of the tears of Asian cattle B. scientists have discovered the dinosaur?s coloring C. microscopes can present you with an amazing world D. man has explored the black hole for thousands of years
7

62. The main purpose of the passage is to ______. A. compare features of different books B. inspire people to become scientists C. teach children some knowledge of science D. recommend new science books to children C Everywhere I look outside my home I see people busy on their high-tech devices, while driving, walking, shopping, even sitting in toilets. When connected electronically, they are away from physical reality. People have been influenced to become technology addicted. One survey reported that “addicted” was the word most commonly used by people to describe their relationship to iPad and similar devices. One study found that people had a harder time resisting the allure of social media than they did for sleep, cigarettes and alcohol. The main goal of technology companies is to get people to spend more money and time on their products, not to actually improve our quality of life. They have successfully created a cultural disease. Consumers willingly give up their freedom, money and time to catch up on the latest information, to keep pace with their peers or to appear modern. I see people trapped in a pathological(病态的)relationship with time-sucking technology, where they serve technology more than technology serves them. I call this technology servitude. I am referring to a loss of personal freedom and independence because of uncontrolled consumption of many kinds of devices that eat up time and money. What is a healthy use of technology devices? That is the vital question. Who is really in charge of my life? That is what people need to ask themselves if we are to have any chance of breaking up false beliefs about their use of technology. When we can live happily without using so much technology for a day or a week, then we can regain control and personal freedom, become the master of technology and discover what there is to enjoy in life free of technology. Mae West is famous for proclaiming the wisdom that “too much of a good thing is wonderful.” But it?s time to discover that it does not work for technology. Richard Fernandez, an executive coach at Google acknowledged that “we can be swept away by our technologies.” To break the grand digital connection people must consider how life long ago could be fantastic without today?s overused technology. 63. The underlined word “allure” in Paragraph 2 probably means ______. A. advantage B. attraction C. adaption D. attempt 64. From the passage, technology companies aim to ______. A. attract people to buy their products C. improve people?s quality of life
8

B. provide the latest information D. deal with cultural diseases

65. It can be inferred from this passage that people ______. A. consider too much technology wonderful B. have realized the harm of high-tech devices C. can regain freedom without high-tech devices D. may enjoy life better without overused technology 66. What?s the author?s attitude towards the overusing of high-tech devices? A. Neutral. B. Sceptical. C. Disapproving. D Did you see American figure skater, Jeremy Abbott, crash to the ice during the short program at the Sochi Olympics, rolling into the wall, clutching his side in pain. Ten seconds later, he got up and continued his skate—despite the pain, embarrassment and fear. All I could think was: this kid?s got courage. In business we have a word for it—resilience, the ability to gain strengths and confidence from overcoming unpleasant events. However, opposite examples appeared in Sochi Olympics as well. For them, failure is someone else?s fault, because they do not accept personal responsibility. Therefore, they have to pay a high price for this attitude. After years of studying failure, I have learned one thing: modesty and open-mindedness in the face of mistakes is the single best thing you can do to improve results. Everyone fails, but not everyone recovers from failure. The key is to learn from it rather than get beaten by it. The good news is that each of us has the potential to live a resilient life on and off the job. It may be difficult, but that just makes it all the more powerful and important. If you believe the above paragraph to be true, then you?re probably more resilient than you think you are. It takes confidence to be resilient but that too much confidence is a killer is so true of leadership. For example, Ron Johnson, the ill-fated CEO of JC Penney, was so stubborn that he completely missed all sorts of signals from employees and customers and instead listened to all those who agreed with him, which failed his strategy. Bouncing back from failure requires that you recognize something has gone wrong, and you were the one who made it happen. The challenge of resilience is not just about our work. When parents help their kids deal with every challenging situation, they are doing an unhelpful action to their children. Parents want to protect their kids from failure, but doing so takes away the opportunity from them to practice not just a life skill but an essential work skill. When self-esteem becomes more important than results, we are accidently training young people to become less adaptable, not more.
9

D. Sympathetic.

Resilience is not just about getting up off the floor, but also being ready for whatever comes next, even when you don?t know what it is. Failures and setbacks are no longer unusual events, but regular features of a dynamic, competitive and highly demanding work environment. Getting up to finish your skate is no longer optional. 67. The example of Jeremy Abbott shows that one should ______. A. recover from failure C. take others? opinions to heart A. Being positive and powerful. B. Being competitive and helpful. C. Being modest and open-minded. D. Being confident and responsible. 69. Which of the following examples shows us resilience? A. A teacher offers students timely help and care. B. A determined athlete practices skating hard every day. C. A confident leader persuades his staff to follow his plan. D. A student has got a low grade but continues to work hard. 70. Which might be the best title for the passage? A. An Example of Resilience: Ron Johnson C. Optional Challenges of Resilience 第二节 (共 5 小题;每小题 2 分,共 10 分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的七个选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为 多余选项。 There is distinction between reading for information and reading for understanding. ____71_____ The first sense is the one in which we read newspapers, magazines, or anything else. ____72_____ Such materials may increase our store of information, but they cannot improve our understanding. And clearly we don?t have any difficulty in gaining the new information, for our understanding was equal to them before we started. Otherwise, we would have felt the shock of puzzlement. The second sense is the one in which we read something that at first we do not completely understand. Here the thing to be read is at the first sight better or higher than the reader. The writer is communicating something that can increase the reader?s understanding. _____73_____ Otherwise one person could never learn from another. Here “learning” means understanding more, not remembering more information.
10

B. stick to his own viewpoint D. challenge difficulties bravely

68. According to the author, what can best build up resilience?

B. Resilience: A Lesson from Sochi D. Resilience in Family Education

What are the conditions in this kind of reading? First, there is inequality in understanding. _____74_____ Besides, his book must convey something he possesses and his potential readers lack. Second, the reader must be able to overcome this inequality in some degree. And he should always try to reach the same level of understanding with the writer. If the equality is approached, success of communication is achieved. _____75_____ It is the least demanding and requires the least amount of effort. Everyone who knows how to read can read for entertainment if he wants to. In fact, any book that can be read for understanding or information can probably be read for entertainment as well. A. The writer should have a better communicating skill. B. Such communication between unequals must be possible. C. We can get access to the content of those materials easily. D. The writer must be “superior” to the reader in understanding. E. Thus, we can employ the word “reading” in two distinct senses. F. Reading for entertainment is capable of increasing our understanding for information. G. Besides gaining information and understanding, there?s another goal of reading—entertainment. Dear Chris, _______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________

In one diet, you only ate Monday, Wednesday and Friday. In another, you drank 50 cups of water a day! W: Those diets didn?t work. I?m on a new diet that will surely make me slim again! M: All right. What?s the secret diet? W: I?m not telling you. You?ll only make fun of it. M: No, I won?t. Tell me. W: All right. I only eat orange-colored foods. I?ve eaten lots of oranges and carrots. M: What?! Oranges? Carrots? You must have lost your mind!

Text 7 M: (Quietly) Why aren?t you doing your homework, Marsha? W: I?ll do it later, Dad. I must practice the guitar first. Our group?s playing at a concert on Saturday. M: (Laughs) Oh, is it? You?ll be making records next, will you? W: We hope so. A famous musician is coming to the concert. So I?d better play well. M: You?d better get on with your homework! You can practice all day Saturday. W: Oh, Dad, you don?t understand at all! This concert could change my life! M: It certainly could! You?ve got exams next month. Important ones! If you don?t get a good certificate, you won?t get a well-paid job. W: (Rudely) I don?t need a certificate to play the guitar. And I don?t want a boring old job in a bank, either. M: (Angrily) Oh, don?t you? Whose boring old job paid for this house? And for that guitar? Text 8 M: Well, look at the map. This is the route I thought we could take on our hike. W: How long is it altogether? M: It?s about three miles. W: That sounds OK. So, we start here at the car park and walk along the path to the waterfall. M: Right. Then we turn left and walk up this small hill. The view from the top of the hill is worth the climb. We can eat a snack there. W: Then we will follow this path down to the foot of the hill. We can see an old church there. M: We can spend a few minutes looking around the church, and have our lunch outside the church, about two hours? stay there. Then we walk along this path, turn south and come back to the car park. W: How long do you think it will take us to complete the walk? M: I think it will take about four hours, including breaks. W: That?s fine. Are there road signs along the way, in case we get lost? M: Yes, there are. They tell us which way to go and how far we have to walk. Text 9 M: Welcome to our game show! Today?s guest, Julie Jones, is trying to win our grand prize, $30,000 in cash and an all-expense paid, six-day vacation to Hawaii. OK, Julie, to win the grand prize, you must answer all of the 3 true or false questions correctly. If not, you go home with a set of books or DVDs about cooking. Remember. When the buzzer goes off(插入声音), you must give your answer. Are you ready? W: I?m ready. M: The first question: A cat has 32 muscles in each ear.(插入声音) W: Uh. I remember it is 33, or 34. Oh, No! I think it?s true.

M: Correct! Question number two: A tuna is the only fish that can blink with both eyes.(插入声 音) W: True. I mean, I mean false. A shark is the only fish that can blink with both eyes. M: Correct. The last question: An elephant is the largest animal on the earth.(插入声音) W: False. A blue whale is the largest one. M: Wow! Super! W: Did I win? M: Yes, Julie, pack your bags, and we?ll pack your wallet. You?re off to Hawaii! Text 10 W: National Car Rental, can I help you? M: I?d like to rent a car. W: How long would you like to rent it? M: 3 days, from next Tuesday to Thursday. W: OK, what type of car would you like to have? M: Urm, just the smallest type. W: So it?ll be a Toyota. That?s ? 45 per day. So for three days, it?ll be ?135 in total and it covers third party insurance, theft, fire and damage. But as for petrol, you need to pay for it yourself. So would you like to rent one? M: Yes, please. W: Now, what type of driving license have you got? M: An international one. W: OK. And your name and age? M: My name is Ronald Schuller, R-O-N-A-L-D, S-C-H-U-L-L-E-R. I?m 33. W: OK. What time would you like to pick up the car? M: Well, say, around noon? Is that OK? W: Around noon. No problem.
